The absorption of heavily doped graphene in the terahertz (THz) and mid-infrared (MIR) spectral regions is considered taking into account both the elastic scattering due to finite-range disorder and the variations of concentration due to long-range disorder. Interplay between intra- and interband transitions is analyzed for the high-frequency regime of response, near the Pauli blocking threshold. The gate voltage and temperature dependencies of the absorption efficiency are calculated. It is demonstrated that for typical parameters, the smearing of the interband absorption edge is determined by a unscreened part of long-range disorder while the intraband absorption is determined by finite-range scattering. The latter yields the spectral dependencies which deviate from those following from the Drude formula. The obtained dependencies are in good agreement with recent experimental results. The comparison of the results of our calculations with the experimental data provides a possibility to extract the disorder characteristics.

We investigate high-order harmonic generation (HHG) in graphene with a quantum master equation approach. The simulations reproduce the observed enhancement in HHG in graphene under elliptically polarized light [N. Yoshikawa et al, Science 356, 736 (2 017)]. On the basis of a microscopic decomposition of the emitted high-order harmonics, we find that the enhancement in HHG originates from an intricate nonlinear coupling between the intraband and interband transitions that are respectively induced by perpendicular electric field components of the elliptically polarized light. Furthermore, we reveal that contributions from different excitation channels destructively interfere with each other. This finding suggests a path to potentially enhance the HHG by blocking a part of the channels and canceling the destructive interference through band-gap or chemical potential manipulation.
Topological insulators are bulk semiconductors that manifest in-gap massless Dirac surface states due to the topological bulk-boundary correspondence principle [1-3]. These surface states have been a subject of tremendous ongoing interest, due both t o their intrinsic properties and to higher order emergence phenomena that can be achieved by manipulating the interface environment [4-11]. Here, angle resolved photoemission (ARPES) spectromicroscopy and supplementary scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) are performed on the model topological insulator Bi2Se3 to investigate the interplay of crystallographic inhomogeneity with the topologically ordered bulk and surface band structure. Quantitative analysis methods are developed to obtain key spectroscopic information in spite of a limited dwell time on each measured point. Band energies are found to vary on the scale of 50 meV across the sample surface, enabling single-sample measurements that are analogous to a multi-sample doping series (termed a binning series). Focusing separately on the surface and bulk electrons reveals a nontrivial hybridization-like interplay between fluctuations in the surface and bulk state energetics.
We report the infrared transmission measurement on electrically gated twisted bilayer graphene. The optical absorption spectrum clearly manifests the dramatic changes such as the splitting of inter-linear-band absorption step, the shift of inter-van Hove singularity transition peak, and the emergence of very strong intra-valence (intra-conduction) band transition. These anomalous optical behaviors demonstrate consistently the non-rigid band structure modification created by the ion-gel gating through the layer-dependent Coulomb screening. We propose that this screening-driven band modification is an universal phenomenon that persists to other bilayer crystals in general, establishing the electrical gating as a versatile technique to engineer the band structures and to create new types of optical absorptions that can be exploited in electro-optical device application.
Spin injection in metallic normal/ferromagnetic junctions is investigated taking into account the anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) occurring in the ferromagnetic layer. It is shown, on the basis of a generalized two channel model, that there is an interface resistance contribution due to anisotropic scattering, beyond spin accumulation and giant magnetoresistance (GMR). The corresponding expression of the thermopower is derived and compared with the expression for the thermopower produced by the GMR. First measurements of anisotropic magnetothermopower are presented in electrodeposited Ni nanowires contacted with Ni, Au and Cu. The results of this study show that while the giant magnetoresistance and corresponding thermopower demonstrates the role of spin-flip scattering, the observed anisotropic magnetothermopower indicates interband s-d relaxation mechanisms.

In many realistic topological materials, more than one kind of fermions contribute to the electronic bands crossing the Fermi level, leading to various novel phenomena. Here, using momentum-resolved inelastic electron scattering, we investigate the p lasmons and their evolution across the phase transition in a type-II Weyl Semimetal MoTe$_2$, in which both Weyl fermions and trivial nonrelativistic fermions contribute to the Fermi surface in the Td phase. One plasmon mode in the 1T phase at high temperature and two plasmon modes in the topological T$_d$ phase at low temperature are observed. Combining with first-priciples calculations, we show that all the plasmon modes are dominated by the interband correlations between the inverted bands of MoTe$_2$. Especially in the T$_d$ phase, since the electronic bands split due to inversion symmetry breaking and spin-orbit coupling, the plasmon modes manifest the interband correlation between the topological Weyl fermions and the trivial nonrelativistic electrons. Our work emphasizes the significance of the interplay between different kinds of carriers in plasmons of topological materials.
