Quasicrystals are metallic alloys that possess long-range, aperiodic structures with diffraction symmetries forbidden to conventional crystals. Since the discovery of quasicrystals by Schechtman et al. at 1984 (ref. 1), there has been considerable progress in resolving their geometric structure. For example, it is well known that the golden ratio of mathematics and art occurs over and over again in their crystal structure. However, the characteristic properties of the electronic states - whether they are extended as in periodic crystals or localized as in amorphous materials - are still unresolved. Here we report the first observation of quantum (T = 0) critical phenomena of the Au-Al-Yb quasicrystal - the magnetic susceptibility and the electronic specific heat coefficient arising from strongly correlated 4f electrons of the Yb atoms diverge as T -> 0. Furthermore, we observe that this quantum critical phenomenon is robust against hydrostatic pressure. By contrast, there is no such divergence in a crystalline approximant, a phase whose composition is close to that of the quasicrystal and whose unit cell has atomic decorations (that is, icosahedral clusters of atoms) that look like the quasicrystal. These results clearly indicate that the quantum criticality is associated with the unique electronic state of the quasicrystal, that is, a spatially confined critical state. Finally we discuss the possibility that there is a general law underlying the conventional crystals and the quasicrystals.

Complete expressions of the thermal-expansion coefficient $alpha$ and the Gr{u}neisen parameter $Gamma$ are derived on the basis of the self-consistent renormalization (SCR) theory. By considering zero-point as well as thermal spin fluctuation under the stationary condition, the specific heat for each class of the magnetic quantum critical point (QCP) specified by the dynamical exponent $z=3$ (FM) and $z=2$ (AFM) and the spatial dimension ($d=3$ and $2$) is shown to be expressed as $C_{V}=C_a-C_b$, where $C_a$ is dominant at low temperatures, reproducing the past SCR criticality endorsed by the renormalization group theory. Starting from the explicit form of the entropy and using the Maxwell relation, $alpha=alpha_a+alpha_b$ (with $alpha_a$ and $alpha_b$ being related to $C_a$ and $C_b$, respectively) is derived, which is proven to be equivalent to $alpha$ derived from the free energy. The temperature-dependent coefficient found to exist in $alpha_b$, which is dominant at low temperatures, contributes to the crossover from the quantum-critical regime to the Curie-Weiss regime and even affects the quantum criticality at 2d AFM QCP. Based on these correctly calculated $C_{V}$ and $alpha$, Gr{u}neisen parameter $Gamma=Gamma_a+Gamma_b$ is derived, where $Gamma_a$ and $Gamma_b$ contain $alpha_a$ and $alpha_b$, respectively. The inverse susceptibility coupled to the volume $V$ in $Gamma_b$ gives rise to divergence of $Gamma$ at the QCP for each class even though characteristic energy scale of spin fluctuation $T_0$ is finite at the QCP, which gives a finite contribution in $Gamma_a=-frac{V}{T_0}left(frac{partial T_0}{partial V}right)_{T=0}$. General properties of $alpha$ and $Gamma$ including their signs as well as the relation to $T_0$ and the Kondo temperature in temperature-pressure phase diagrams of Ce- and Yb-based heavy electron systems are discussed.
We report a single-crystal study on the magnetism of the rare-earth compound PrTiNbO$_6$ that experimentally realizes the zigzag pseudospin-$frac{1}{2}$ quantum antiferromagnetic chain model. Random crystal electric field caused by the site mixing be tween non-magnetic Ti$^{4+}$ and Nb$^{5+}$, results in the non-Kramers ground state quasi-doublet of Pr$^{3+}$ with the effective pseudospin-$frac{1}{2}$ Ising moment. Despite the antiferromagnetic intersite coupling of about 4 K, no magnetic freezing is detected down to 0.1 K, whilst the system approaches its ground state with almost zero residual spin entropy. At low temperatures, a sizable gap of about 1 K is observed in zero field. We ascribe this gap to off-diagonal anisotropy terms in the pseudospin Hamiltonian, and argue that rare-earth oxides open an interesting venue for studying magnetism of quantum spin chains.
We report on comprehensive results identifying the ground state of a triangular-lattice structured YbZnGaO$_4$ to be spin glass, including no long-range magnetic order, prominent broad excitation continua, and absence of magnetic thermal conductivity . More crucially, from the ultralow-temperature a.c. susceptibility measurements, we unambiguously observe frequency-dependent peaks around 0.1 K, indicating the spin-glass ground state. We suggest this conclusion to hold also for its sister compound YbMgGaO$_4$, which is confirmed by the observation of spin freezing at low temperatures. We consider disorder and frustration to be the main driving force for the spin-glass phase.
Quantum spin liquid (QSL) is a novel state of matter which refuses the conventional spin freezing even at 0 K. Experimentally searching for the structurally perfect candidates is a big challenge in condensed matter physics. Here we report the success ful synthesis of a new spin-1/2 triangular antiferromagnet YbMgGaO$_4$ with R$bar{3}$m symmetry. The compound with an ideal two-dimensional and spatial isotropic magnetic triangular-lattice has no site-mixing magnetic defects and no antisymmetric Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya (DM) interactions. No spin freezing down to 60 mK (despite $Theta$$_w$ $sim$ -4 K), the low-T power-law temperature dependence of heat capacity and nonzero susceptibility suggest that YbMgGaO$_4$ is a promising gapless ($leq$ $|$$Theta$$_w$$|$/100) QSL candidate. The residual spin entropy, which is accurately determined with a non-magnetic reference LuMgGaO$_4$, approaches zero ($<$ 0.6 %). This indicates that the possible QSL ground state (GS) of the frustrated spin system has been experimentally achieved at the lowest measurement temperatures.
We present the ultralow-temperature specific heat and thermal conductivity measurements on single crystals of triangular-lattice organic compound EtMe$_3$Sb[Pd(dmit)$_2$]$_2$, which has long been considered as a gapless quantum spin liquid candidate. In specific heat measurements, a finite linear term is observed, consistent with the previous work [S. Yamashita $et$ $al.$, Nat. Commun. {bf 2}, 275 (2011)]. However, we do not observe a finite residual linear term in the thermal conductivity measurements, and the thermal conductivity does not change in a magnetic field of 6 Tesla. These results are in sharp contrast to previous thermal conductivity measurements on EtMe$_3$Sb[Pd(dmit)$_2$]$_2$ [M. Yamashita $et$ $al.$ Science {bf 328}, 1246 (2010)], in which a huge residual linear term was observed and attributed to highly mobile gapless excitations, likely the spinons of a quantum spin liquid. In this context, the true ground state of EtMe$_3$Sb[Pd(dmit)$_2$]$_2$ has to be reconsidered.
