Ultracold fermions trapped in a honeycomb optical lattice constitute a versatile setup to experimentally realize the Haldane model [Phys. Rev. Lett. 61, 2015 (1988)]. In this system, a non-uniform synthetic magnetic flux can be engineered through laser-induced methods, explicitly breaking time-reversal symmetry. This potentially opens a bulk gap in the energy spectrum, which is associated with a non-trivial topological order, i.e., a non-zero Chern number. In this work, we consider the possibility of producing and identifying such a robust Chern insulator in the laser-coupled honeycomb lattice. We explore a large parameter space spanned by experimentally controllable parameters and obtain a variety of phase diagrams, clearly identifying the accessible topologically non-trivial regimes. We discuss the signatures of Chern insulators in cold-atom systems, considering available detection methods. We also highlight the existence of topological semi-metals in this system, which are gapless phases characterized by non-zero winding numbers, not present in Haldanes original model.

We introduce an explicit scheme to realize Chern insulating phases employing cold atoms trapped in a state-dependent optical lattice and laser-induced tunneling processes. The scheme uses two internal states, a ground state and a long-lived excited s tate, respectively trapped in separate triangular and honeycomb optical lattices. A resonant laser coherently coupling the two internal states enables hopping between the two sublattices with a Peierls-like phase factor. Although laser-induced hopping by itself does not lead to topological bands with non-zero Chern numbers, we find that such bands emerge when adding an auxiliary lattice that perturbs the lattice structure, effectively turning it at low energies into a realization of the Haldane model: A two-dimensional honeycomb lattice breaking time-reversal symmetry. We investigate the parameters of the resulting tight-binding model using first-principles band structure calculations to estimate the relevant regimes for experimental implementation.
We propose an experimentally feasible setup with ultracold alkaline earth atoms to simulate the dynamics of U(1) lattice gauge theories in 2+1 dimensions with a Chern-Simons term. To this end we consider the ground state properties of spin-5/2 alkali ne earth fermions in a honeycomb lattice. We use the Gutzwiller projected variational approach in the strongly repulsive regime in the case of filling 1/6. The ground state of the system is a chiral spin liquid state with $2pi/3$ flux per plaquette, which spontaneously violates time reversal invariance. We demonstrate that due to the breaking of time reversal symmetry the system exhibits quantum Hall effect and chiral edge states. We relate the experimentally accessible spin fluctuations to the emerging gauge field dynamics. We discuss also properties of the lowest energy competing orders.
We investigate a binary mixture of bosonic atoms loaded into a state-dependent honeycomb lattice. For this system, the emergence of a so-called twisted-superfluid ground state was experimentally observed in [Soltan-Panahi et al., Nat. Phys. 8, 71 (20 12)]. Theoretically, the origin of this effect is not understood. We perform numerical simulations of an extended Bose-Hubbard model adapted to the experimental parameters employing the Multi-Layer Multi-Configuration Time-Dependent Hartree method for Bosons. Our results confirm the overall applicability of mean-field theory within the relevant parameter range. Beyond this, we provide a detailed analysis of correlation effects correcting the mean-field result. These have the potential to induce asymmetries in single shot time-of-flight measurements, but we find no indication of the patterns characteristic of the twisted superfluid. We comment on the restrictions of our model and possible extensions.
Because global topological properties are robust against local perturbations, understanding and manipulating the topological properties of physical systems is essential in advancing quantum science and technology. For quantum computation, topological ly protected qubit operations can increase computational robustness, and for metrology the quantized Hall effect directly defines the von Klitzing constant. Fundamentally, topological order is generated by singularities called topological defects in extended spaces, and is quantified in terms of Chern numbers, each of which measures different sorts of fields traversing surfaces enclosing these topological singularities. Here, inspired by high energy theories, we describe our synthesis and characterization of a singularity present in non-Abelian gauge theories - a Yang monopole - using atomic Bose-Einstein condensates in a five-dimensional space, and quantify the monopole in terms of Chern numbers measured on enclosing manifolds. While the well-known 1st Chern number vanished, the 2nd Chern number, measured for the first time in any physical settings, did not. By displacing the manifold, we then observed a phase transition from topological to trivial as the monopole left the manifold.
The theory of topological insulators and superconductors has mostly focused on non-interacting and gapped systems. This review article discusses topological phases that are either gapless or interacting. We discuss recent progress in identifying gapl ess systems with stable topological properties (such as novel surface states), using Weyl semimetals as an illustration. We then review recent progress in describing topological phases of interacting gapped systems. We explain how new types of edge states can be stabilized by interactions and symmetry, even though the bulk has only conventional excitations and no topological order of the kind associated with Fractional Quantum Hall states.
