We directly observe longitudinal electromagnetic fields in focused freely propagating terahertz beams of radial and linear polarization. In accordance with theory, the longitudinal fields are phase shifted by a value of pi/2 with respect to the transverse field components. This behavior is found for all frequency components of single cycle THz radiation pulses. Additionally we show that the longitudinal field of a radially polarized THz beam has a smaller spot size as compared to the transverse field of a linearly polarized beam, that is focused under the same conditions.
We demonstrate an experimental technique for both transverse and longitudinal characterization of bunched femtosecond free electron beams. The operation principle is based on monitoring of the current of electrons that obtained an energy gain during
We discuss the properties of pure multipole beams with well-defined handedness or helicity, with the beam field a simultaneous eigenvector of the squared total angular momentum and its projection along the propagation axis. Under the condition of hem
The use of structured light beams to detect the velocity of targets moving perpendicularly to the beams propagation axis opens new avenues for remote sensing of moving objects. However, determining the direction of motion is still a challenge since d
Graphene plasmons are of remarkable features that make graphene plasmon elements promising for applications to integrated photonic devices. The fabrication of graphene plasmon components and control over plasmon propagating are of fundamental importa
Synchronising ultra-short (~fs) and focussed laser pulses is a particularly difficult task, as this timescale lies orders of magnitude below the typical range of fast electronic devices. Here we present an optical technique that allows for femtosecon
