Nematicity is a well known property of liquid crystals and has been recently discussed in the context of strongly interacting electrons. An electronic nematic phase has been seen by many experiments in certain strongly correlated materials, in particular, in the pseudogap phase generic to many hole-doped cuprate superconductors. Recent measurements in high $T_c$ superconductors has shown even if the lattice is perfectly rotationally symmetric, the ground state can still have strongly nematic local properties. Our study of the two-dimensional Hubbard model provides strong support of the recent experimental results on local rotational $C_4$ symmetry breaking. The variational cluster approach is used here to show the possibility of an electronic nematic state and the proximity of the underlying symmetry-breaking ground state within the Hubbard model. We identify this nematic phase in the overdoped region and show that the local nematicity decreases with increasing electron filling. Our results also indicate that strong Coulomb interaction may drive the nematic phase into a phase similar to the stripe structure. The calculated spin (magnetic) correlation function in momentum space shows the effects resulting from real-space nematicity.

Charge order in cuprate superconductors is a possible source of anomalous electronic properties in the underdoped regime. Intra-unit cell charge ordering tendencies point to electronic nematic order involving oxygen orbitals. In this context we inves tigate charge instabilities in the Emery model and calculate the charge susceptibility within diagrammatic perturbation theory. In this approach, the onset of charge order is signalled by a divergence of the susceptibility. Our calculations reveal three different kinds of order: a commensurate ($q=0$) nematic order, and two incommensurate nematic phases with modulation wavevectors that are either axial or oriented along the Brillouin zone diagonal. We examine the nematic phase diagram as a function of the filling, the interaction parameters, and the band structure. We also present results for the excitation spectrum near the nematic instability, and show that a soft nematic mode emerges from the particle-hole continuum at the transition. The Fermi surface reconstructions that accompany the modulated nematic phases are discussed with respect to their relevance for magneto-oscillation and photoemission measurements. The modulated nematic phases that emerge from the three-band Emery model are compared to those found previously in one-band models.
We study the excitonic insulating (EI) phase in the two-band Hubbard models on the Penrose tiling. Performing the real-space mean-field calculations systematically, we obtain the ground state phase diagrams for the vertex and center models. We find t hat, in some regimes, the stable EI phase is induced by small interband interactions. We argue that this originates from the electron-hole pairing for the completely or nearly degenerate states, which are characteristic of the Penrose tiling. We also study spatial distribution of the order parameter, mapping it to the perpendicular space.

A moir{e} system is formed when two periodic structures have a slightly mismatched period, resulting in unusual strongly correlated states in the presence of particle-particle interactions. The periodic structures can arise from the intrinsic crystal line order and periodic external field. We investigate a one-dimensional Hubbard models with periodic on-site potential of period $n_{0}$, which is commensurate to the lattice constant. For large $% n_{0}$, exact solution demonstrates that there is a midgap flat band with zero energy in the absence of Hubbard interaction. Each moir{e} unit cell contributes two zero energy levels to the flat band. In the presence of Hubbard interaction, the midgap physics is demonstrated to be well described by a uniform Hubbard chain, in which the effective hopping and on-site interaction strength, can be controlled by the amplitude and period of the external field. Numerical simulations are performed to demonstrate the correlated behaviors in the finite-sized moir{e} Hubbard system, including the existence of $eta $-pairing state, and bound pair oscillation. This finding provides a method to enhance the correlated effect by a spatially periodic external field.
The nature of the hidden-order (HO) state in URu2Si2 remains one of the major unsolved issues in heavy-fermion physics. Recently, torque magnetometry, x-ray diffraction and elastoresistivity data have suggested that the HO phase transition at THO = 1 7.5 K is driven by electronic nematic effects. Here, we search for thermodynamic signatures of this purported structural instability using anisotropic thermal-expansion, Youngs modulus, elastoresistivity and specific-heat measurements. In contrast to the published results, we find no evidence of a rotational symmetry-breaking in any of our data. Interestingly, our elastoresistivity measurements, which are in full agreement with published results, exhibit a Curie-Weiss divergence, which we however attribute to a volume and not to a symmetry-breaking effect. Finally, clear evidence for thermal fluctuations is observed in our heat-capacity data, from which we estimate the HO correlation length.
We study the real-time and real-space dynamics of charge in the one-dimensional Hubbard model in the limit of high temperatures. To this end, we prepare pure initial states with sharply peaked density profiles and calculate the time evolution of thes e nonequilibrium states, by using numerical forward-propagation approaches to chains as long as 20 sites. For a class of typical states, we find excellent agreement with linear-response theory and unveil the existence of remarkably clean charge diffusion in the regime of strong particle-particle interactions. Moreover, we demonstrate that this diffusive behavior does not depend on certain details of our initial conditions, i.e., it occurs for five different realizations with random and nonrandom internal degrees of freedom, single and double occupation of the central site, and displacement of spin-up and spin-down particles.
