The electron mass shift in a laser field has long remained an elusive concept. We show that the mass shift can exist in pulses but that it is neither unique nor universal: it can be reduced by pulse shaping. We show also that the detection of mass shift effects in laser-particle scattering experiments is feasible with current technology, even allowing for the transverse structure of realistic beams.

Dark Matter (DM) is an elusive form of matter which has been postulated to explain astronomical observations through its gravitational effects on stars and galaxies, gravitational lensing of light around these, and through its imprint on the Cosmic M icrowave Background (CMB). This indirect evidence implies that DM accounts for as much as 84.5% of all matter in our Universe, yet it has so far evaded all attempts at direct detection, leaving such confirmation and the consequent discovery of its nature as one of the biggest challenges in modern physics. Here we present a novel form of low-mass DM $chi$ that would have been missed by all experiments so far. While its large interaction strength might at first seem unlikely, neither constraints from particle physics nor cosmological/astronomical observations are sufficient to rule out this type of DM, and it motivates our proposal for direct detection by optomechanics technology which should soon be within reach, namely, through the precise position measurement of a levitated mesoscopic particle which will be perturbed by elastic collisions with $chi$ particles. We show that a recently proposed nanoparticle matter-wave interferometer, originally conceived for tests of the quantum superposition principle, is sensitive to these collisions, too.
We have found that the error-signal frequency corresponding to the coherent population trapping resonance can be displaced from that of $0-0$ transition unperturbed by the optical field, although the frequency is not sensitive to changes in its inten sity. We consider the double $Lambda$-system of levels interacting with the asymmetric polychromatic optical field to demonstrate that this effect arises due to intensity nonlinearity of the error-signal frequency shift. The experiment with $^{87}$Rb atoms in Ar-N$_2$ buffer gas atomic cell shows how the displacement value depends on different parameters. The possible influence of the effect on the clocks frequency stability and reproducibility are discussed.
Based on the precision experimental data of energy-level differences in hydrogenlike atoms, especially the 1S-2S transition of hydrogen and deuterium, the necessity of establishing a reduced Dirac equation (RDE) with reduced mass as the substitution of original electron mass is stressed. The theoretical basis of RDE lies on two symmetries, the invariance under the space-time inversion and that under the pure space inversion. Based on RDE and within the framework of quantum electrodynamics in covariant form, the Lamb shift can be evaluated (at one-loop level) as the radiative correction on a bound electron staying in an off-mass-shell state--a new approach eliminating the infrared divergence. Hence the whole calculation, though with limited accuracy, is simplified, getting rid of all divergences and free of ambiguity.
We report measurements of the time-dependent phases of the leak and retrieved pulses obtained in EIT storage experiments with metastable helium vapor at room temperature. In particular, we investigate the influence of the optical detuning at two-phot on resonance, and provide numerical simulations of the full dynamical Maxwell-Bloch equations, which allow us to account for the experimental results.
Using a recently developed technique to solve Schrodinger equation for constant mass, we studied the regime in which mass varies with position i.e position dependent mass Schrodinger equation(PDMSE). We obtained an analytical solution for the PDMSE a nd applied our approach to study a position dependent mass $m(x)$ particle scattered by a potential $mathcal{V}(x)$. We also studied the structural analogy between PDMSE and two-level atomic system interacting with a classical field.
