One of the key motivations for the development of atomically resolved spectroscopic imaging STM (SI-STM) has been to probe the electronic structure of cuprate high temperature superconductors. In both the d-wave superconducting (dSC) and the pseudogap (PG) phases of underdoped cuprates, two distinct classes of electronic states are observed using SI-STM. The first class consists of the dispersive Bogoliubov quasiparticles of a homogeneous d-wave superconductor. These are detected below a lower energy scale |E|={Delta}0 and only upon a momentum space (k-space) arc which terminates near the lines connecting k=pm({pi}/a0,0) to k=pm(0, {pi}/a0). In both the dSC and PG phases, the only broken symmetries detected in the |E|leq {Delta}0 states are those of a d-wave superconductor. The second class of states occurs at energies near the pseudogap energy scale |E| {Delta}1 which is associated conventionally with the antinodal states near k=pm({pi}/a0,0) and k=pm(0, {pi}/a0). We find that these states break the 90o-rotational (C4) symmetry of electronic structure within CuO2 unit cells, at least down to 180o rotational (C2) symmetry (nematic) but in a spatially disordered fashion. This intra-unit-cell C4 symmetry breaking coexists at |E| {Delta}1 with incommensurate conductance modulations locally breaking both rotational and translational symmetries (smectic). The properties of these two classes of |E| {Delta}1 states are indistinguishable in the dSC and PG phases. To explain this segregation of k-space into the two regimes distinguished by the symmetries of their electronic states and their energy scales |E| {Delta}1 and |E|leq{Delta}0, and to understand how this impacts the electronic phase diagram and the mechanism of high-Tc superconductivity, represents one of a key challenges for cuprate studies.

We report on broad-band infrared ellipsometry measurements of the c-axis conductivity of underdoped RBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-d} (R=Y, Nd, and La) single crystals. Our data provide a detailed account of the spectral weight (SW) redistributions due to the nor mal state pseudogap (PG) and the superconducting (SC) gap. They show that these phenomena involve different energy scales, exhibit distinct doping dependencies and thus are likely of different origin. In particular, the SW redistribution in the PG state closely resembles the one of a conventional charge- or spin density wave (CDW or SDW) system.
From measurements of the ^{63}Cu Knight shift (K) and the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate (1/T_{1}) under magnetic fields from zero up to 28 T in the slightly overdoped superconductor TlSr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{6.8} (T_{c}=68 K), we find that the pseudo gap behavior, {em i.e.}, the reductions of 1/T_{1}T and K above T_{c} from the values expected from the normal state at high T, is strongly field dependent and follows a scaling relation. We show that this scaling is consistent with the effects of the Cooper pair density fluctuations. The present finding contrasts sharply with the pseudogap property reported previously in the underdoped regime where no field effect was seen up to 23.2 T. The implications are discussed.
In this paper, we review the low energy electronic structure of the kinetic energy driven d-wave cuprate superconductors. We give a general description of the charge-spin separation fermion-spin theory, where the constrained electron is decoupled as the gauge invariant dressed holon and spin. In particular, we show that under the decoupling scheme, the charge-spin separation fermion-spin representation is a natural representation of the constrained electron defined in a restricted Hilbert space without double electron occupancy. Based on the charge-spin separation fermion-spin theory, we have developed the kinetic energy driven superconducting mechanism, where the superconducting state is controlled by both superconducting gap parameter and quasiparticle coherence. Within this kinetic energy driven superconductivity, we have discussed the low energy electronic structure of the single layer and bilayer cuprate superconductors in both superconducting and normal states, and qualitatively reproduced all main features of the angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements on the single layer and bilayer cuprate superconductors. We show that the superconducting state in cuprate superconductors is the conventional Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer like with the d-wave symmetry, so that the basic Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer formalism with the d-wave gap function is still valid in discussions of the low energy electronic structure of cuprate superconductors, although the pairing mechanism is driven by the kinetic energy by exchanging spin excitations. We also show that the well pronounced peak-dip-hump structure of the bilayer cuprate superconductors in the superconducting state and double-peak structure in the normal state are mainly caused by the bilayer splitting.
In a multiorbital model of the cuprate high-temperature superconductors soft antiferromagnetic (AF) modes are assumed to reconstruct the Fermi surface to form nodal pockets. The subsequent charge ordering transition leads to a phase with a spatially modulated transfer of charge between neighboring oxygen p_x and p_y orbitals and also weak modulations of the charge density on the copper d_{x^2-y^2} orbitals. As a prime result of the AF Fermi surface reconstruction, the wavevectors of the charge modulations are oriented along the crystalline axes with a periodicity that agrees quantitatively with experiments. This resolves a discrepancy between experiments, which find axial order, and previous theoretical calculations, which find modulation wavevectors along the Brillouin zone (BZ) diagonal. The axial order is stabilized by hopping processes via the Cu4s orbital, which is commonly not included in model analyses of cuprate superconductors.
For YBa_2Cu_3O_{6+delta} and Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8 superconductors, electronic Raman scattering from high- and low-energy excitations has been studied in relation to the hole doping level, temperature, and energy of the incident photons. For underdoped s uperconductors, it is concluded that short range antiferromagnetic (AF) correlations persist with hole doping and doped single holes are incoherent in the AF environment. Above the superconducting (SC) transition temperature T_c the system exhibits a sharp Raman resonance of B_1g symmetry and about 75 meV energy and a pseudogap for electron-hole excitations below 75 meV, a manifestation of a partially coherent state forming from doped incoherent quasi-particles. The occupancy of the coherent state increases with cooling until phase ordering at T_c produces a global SC state.
