An aging effect due to a domain evolution in (K0.5,Na0.5)Nb0.97Sb0.03O3 <001> textured ceramics was investigated by piezoresponse force microscopy. We find that such an aging effect is pronounced in the orthorhombic single phase field. A more uniform and finer domain structure was found with aging, which was believed to originate from defect-migration. After poling, large domains with smooth boundaries were found in the aged condition.

Thin films of orthorhombic TbMnO3, as well as other orthorhombic manganites, epitaxially grown on cubic SrTiO3 substrates display an induced magnetic moment that is absent in the bulk (antiferromagnetic) counterpart. Here we show that there is a clea r correlation between the domain microstructure and the induced magnetic moment in TbMnO3 films on SrTiO3. In addition, the distinct dependence of the magnetization with the film thickness is not consistent with domain magnetism and indicates that the domain walls, rather than the domains, are the origin of the net magnetic moment. Since the orientation of the domain walls can be designed by the film-substrate relationship and its density can be tuned with the film thickness, these results represent a significant step forward towards the design of devices based on domain wall functionality.
We propose a two-dimensional phase-field-crystal model for the (2$times$1)-(1$times$1) phase transitions of Si(001) and Ge(001) surfaces. The dimerization in the 2$times$1 phase is described with a phase-field-crystal variable which is determined by solving an evolution equation derived from the free energy. Simulated periodic arrays of dimerization variable is consistent with scanning-tunnelling-microscopy images of the two dimerized surfaces. Calculated temperature dependence of the dimerization parameter indicates that normal dimers and broken ones coexist between the temperatures describing the charactristic temperature width of the phase-transition, $T_L$ and $T_H$, and a first-order phase transition takes place at a temperature between them. The dimerization over the whole temperature is determined. These results are in agreement with experiment. This phase-field-crystal approach is applicable to phase-transitions of other reconstructed surface phases, especially semiconductor $ntimes$1 reconstructed surface phases.
Lead-free ceramics (K0.44+xNa0.52Li0.04)(Nb0.86Ta0.10Sb0.04)O3+x/2 (x=-0,06) were prepared by conventional solid state sintering. The results indicate a correlation between crystalline symmetry and electrical properties. Higher tetragonality was obse rved in samples with higher piezoelectric response. As the tetragonality increase the presence of polymorphic phase decrease associated with a reduction of the relaxor behaviour response. The ceramics with c/a = 1.011 ratio exhibit enhanced electrical properties. The Raman spectroscopy showed a certain asymmetry in the paraelectric phase above the Curie temperature Tc that provokes retention of the polarization. The crystalline symmetry plays a crucial role in the piezoelectric properties of the system.
Spin reorientation and magnetisation reversal are two important features of the rare-earth orthorhombic provskites ($RM$O$_{3}$s) that have attracted a lot of attention, though their exact microscopic origin has eluded researchers. Here, using densit y functional theory and classical atomistic spin dynamics we build a general Heisenberg magnetic model that allows to explore the whole phase diagram of the chromite and ferrite compounds and to scrutinize the microscopic mechanism responsible for spin reorientations and magnetisation reversals. We show that the occurrence of a magnetization reversal transition depends on the relative strength and sign of two interactions between rare-earth and transition-metal atoms: superexchange and Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya. We also conclude that the presence of a smooth spin reorientation transition between the so-called $Gamma_4$ and the $Gamma_2$ phases through a coexisting region, and the temperature range in which it occurs, depends on subtle balance of metal--metal (superexchange and Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya) and metal--rare-earth (Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya) couplings. In particular, we show that the intermediate coexistence region occurs because the spin sublattices rotate at different rates.
We report on a systematic comparative study of the spin Hall efficiency between highly face-centered cubic (fcc)-textured Pt-Al alloy films grown on MgO(001) and poorly-crystallized Pt-Al alloy films grown on SiO$_2$. Using CoFeB as the detector, we show that for Al compositions centering around $x = 25$, mainly L1$_{2}$ ordered Pt$_{100-x}$Al$_x$ alloy films grown on MgO exhibit outstanding charge-spin conversion efficiency. For Pt$_{78}$Al$_{22}$/CoFeB bilayer on MgO, we obtain damping-like spin Hall efficiency as high as $xi_textrm{DL} sim +0.20$ and expect up to seven-fold reduction of power consumption compared to the polycrystalline bilayer of the same Al composition on SiO$_2$. This work demonstrates that improving the crystallinity of fcc Pt-based alloys is a crucial step for achieving large spin Hall efficiency and low power consumption in this material class.
