We follow up on the analysis of Mecozzi and Bellini (arXiv:1110:1253v1) where they showed, in principle, the possibility of superluminal propagation of neutrinos, as indicated by the recent OPERA result. We refine the analysis by introducing wave packets for the superposition of energy eigenstates and discuss the implications of their results with realistic values for the mixing and mass parameters in a full three neutrino mixing scenario. Our analysis shows the possibility of superluminal propagation of neutrino flavour in a very narrow range of neutrino parameter space. Simultaneously this reduces the number of observable events drastically. Therefore, the OPERA result cannot be explained in this frame-work.

We study distances of propagation and the group velocities of the muon neutrinos in the presence of mixing and oscillations assuming that Lorentz invariance holds. Oscillations lead to distortion of the $ u_mu$ wave packet which, in turn, changes the group velocity and the distance $ u_mu$ travels. We find that the change of the distance, $d_{osc}$, is proportional to the length of the wave packet, $sigma_x$, and the oscillation phase, $phi_p$, acquired by neutrinos in the $pi-$ and $K-$ meson decay tunnel where neutrino wave packet is formed: $d_{osc} propto sigma phi_p$. Although the distance $d_{osc}$ may effectively correspond to the superluminal motion, the effect is too tiny ($sim 10^{- 5}$ cm) to be reconciled with the OPERA result. We analyze various possibilities to increase $d_{osc}$ and discuss experimental setups in which $d_{osc}$ (corresponding to the superluminal motion) can reach an observable value $sim 1$ m.

This is a brief note discussing the energy dependence of superluminal neutrino velocities recently claimed by OPERA [1,2]. The analysis is based on the data provided there on this issue, as well as on consistency with neutrino data from SN1987a as re corded by the Kamioka detector [3]. It is seen that it is quite difficult to reconcile OPERA with SN1987a. The so called Coleman- Glashow dispersion relations do not do that well, if applied at all neutrino energies. The so called quantum gravity inspired dispersion relations perform far worse. Near OPERA energies both an energy-independent velocity, as well as a linear energy dependence with an offset that is comparable in value to the observed {delta}v by OPERA at 28.1 GeV works very well. Our analysis shows that precision arrival time data from SN1987a still allow for superluminal behaviour for supernova neutrinos. A smooth interpolation is given that reconciles OPERA and SN1987a quite well. It suggests a fourth power energy dependence for {delta}v of supernova neutrinos. This behaviour is insensitive to whether the velocities are energy-independent, or linearly dependent on energy, near OPERA scale of energies. Suggestions are made for experimental checks for these relations.

We study neutrino flavor oscillations in a plane gravitational wave (GW) with circular polarization. For this purpose we use the solution of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation to get the contribution of GW to the effective Hamiltonian for the neutrino mass eigenstates. Then, considering stochastic GWs, we derive the equation for the density matrix for flavor neutrinos and analytically solve it in the two flavors approximation. The equation for the density matrix for the three neutrino flavors is also derived and solved numerically. In both cases of two and three neutrino flavors, we predict the ratios of fluxes of different flavors at a detector for cosmic neutrinos with relatively low energies owing to the interaction with such a GW background. The obtained results are compared with the recent observation of the flavor content of the astrophysical neutrino fluxes.
This is the report of neutrino and astroparticle physics working group at WHEPP-8. We present the discussions carried out during the workshop on selected topics in the above fields and also indicate progress made subsequently. The neutrino physics su bgroup studied the possibilites of constraining neutrino masses, mixing and CPT violation in lepton sector from future experiments. Neutrino mass models in the context of abelian horizontal symmetries, warped extra dimensions and in presence of triplet Higgs were studied. Effect of threshold corrections on radiative magnification of mixing angles was investigated. The astroparticle physics subgroup focused on how various particle physics inputs affect the CMBR fluctuation spectrum, and on brane cosmology. This report also contains an introduction on how to use the publicly available code CMBFAST to calculate the CMBR fluctuations.
We reconsider the problem of the birefringence of electromagnetic (EM) waves in a medium consisting of a plasma and a $ ubar{ u}$-gas within the Standard Model of particle physics. The considered effect arises in such a medium due to the parity viola tion for the electroweak neutrino-electron interaction. Our recent calculations of the electroweak correction to the photon polarization operator in the electroweak plasma allow us to significantly improve some previous estimates of such effect in astrophysics. We estimate the rotary power for EM waves propagating in a non-relativistic plasma in the intergalactic space and interacting with the gas of relic neutrinos and antineutrinos there. We show that, in presence of a plasma, the EM wave birefringence effect in a $ ubar{ u}$-gas exceeds significantly that effect in a $ ubar{ u}$-gas in empty space considered earlier. These previous treatments of the birefringence relied on the calculations of the refraction index for on-shell photons in vacuum using the forward scattering amplitude $gamma uto gamma u$ with virtual charged leptons in Feynman diagrams. The possibility to observe experimentally the new effect suggested here is discussed.
