The Kondo resonance at the Fermi level is well-established for the electronic structure of Ce (f1 electron) and Yb (f1 hole) based systems. In this work, we report complementary experimental and theoretical studies on the Kondo resonance in Pr-based f2 system, PrTi2Al20. Using Pr 3d-4f resonant photoemission spectroscopy and single impurity Anderson model (SIAM) calculations including the full multiplets of Pr ions, we show that an f2 system can also give rise to a Kondo resonance at the Fermi level. The Kondo resonance peak is experimentally observed through a final-state-multiplet dependent resonance and is reproduced with properly tuned hybridization strength in SIAM calculations.

Shortly after the discovery of topological band insulators, the topological Kondo insulators (TKIs) have also been theoretically predicted. The latter has ignited revival interest in the properties of Kondo insulators. Currently, the feasibility of t opological nature in SmB$_6$ has been intensively analyzed by several complementary probes. Here by starting with a minimal-orbital Anderson lattice model, we explore the local electronic structure in a Kondo insulator. We show that the two strong topological regimes sandwiching the weak topological regime give rise to a single Dirac cone, which is located near the center or corner of the surface Brillouin zone. We further find that, when a single impurity is placed on the surface, low-energy resonance states are induced in the weak scattering limit for the strong TKI regimes and the resonance level moves monotonically across the hybridization gap with the strength of impurity scattering potential; while low energy states can only be induced in the unitary scattering limit for the weak TKI regime, where the resonance level moves universally toward the center of the hybridization gap. These impurity induced low-energy quasiparticles will lead to characteristic signatures in scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy, which has recently found success in probing into exotic properties in heavy fermion systems.
We have performed first-principles calculation of the surface and bulk wavefunctions of the Cu(111) surface and their hybridization energies to a Co adatom, including the potential scattering from the Co. By analyzing the calculated hybridization ene rgies, we found the bulk states dominate the contribution to the Kondo temperature, in agreement with recent experiments. Furthermore, we also calculate the tunneling conductance of a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) and compare our results with recent experiments of Co impurities in the Cu(111) surface. Good quantitative agreement is found at short parallel impurity-tip distances (< 6 A). Our results indicate the need for a new formulation of the problem at larger distances.

We present a general theory for the Fano resonance in Anderson impurity systems. It is shown that the broadening of the impurity level leads to an additional and important contribution to the Fano resonance around the Fermi surface, especially in the mixed valence regime. This contribution results from the interference between the Kondo resonance and the broadened impurity level. Being applied to the scanning tunnelling microscopic experiments, we find that our theory gives a consistent and quantitative account for the Fano resonance lineshapes for both Co and Ti impurities on Au or Ag surfaces. The Ti systems are found to be in the mixed valence regime.
One of the main open problems in the field of transport in strongly interacting nanostructures is the understanding of currents beyond the linear response regime. In this work, we consider the single-impurity Anderson model and use the adaptive time- dependent density matrix renormalization group (tDMRG) method to compute real-time currents out of equilibrium. We first focus on the particle-hole symmetric point where Kondo correlations are the strongest and then extend the study of the nonequilibrium transport to the mixed-valence regime. As a main result, we present accurate data for the current-voltage characteristics of this model.
We use hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (HAXPES) to investigate the electronic structure of YbAl2, for which the Yb valence has not been consistently reported to date. The bulk sensitivity and the analytical simplicity provided by the Yb 3d core -level HAXPES allow a reliable determination of the mean valence of Yb ions. For YbAl2, it is evaluated to be +2.20, which remains nearly unchanged below 300 K. The Kondo resonance peak with an extremely high Kondo temperature (above 2000 K) is clearly identified in the valence-band spectra. The results indicate that a coherent Kondo state can be robust even in a nearly divalent system.
