We report Eu L3-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) investigation of the electronic structure of EuB6. We observe that the RIXS spectral weight around 1.1 eV increases dramatically when the system is cooled below the ferromagnetic ordering temperature and follows the magnetic order parameter. This spectral feature is attributed to the inter-site excitation from the local 4f orbital to the spin-split 5d orbital on the neighboring site, illustrating the essential role of exchange splitting of the conducting electrons. Based on our density functional theory calculations, the RIXS data suggest that EuB6 at low temperature can be consistently described with a semi-metallic electronic structure with incomplete spin-polarization. We propose routes to achieve half-metallicity in EuB6, which utilize the strong tunability of the electronic structure against gate voltage, strain, and magnetic field.

Bulk and surface state contributions to the electrical resistance of single-crystal samples of the topological Kondo insulator compound SmB6 are investigated as a function of crystal thickness and surface charge density, the latter tuned by ionic liq uid gating with electrodes patterned in a Corbino disk geometry on a single surface. By separately tuning bulk and surface conduction channels, we show conclusive evidence for a model with an insulating bulk and metallic surface states, with a crossover temperature that depends solely on the relative contributions of each conduction channel. The surface conductance, on the order of 100 e^2/h and electron-like, exhibits a field-effect mobility of 133 cm^2/V/s and a large carrier density of ~2x10^{14}/cm^2, in good agreement with recent photoemission results. With the ability to gate-modulate surface conduction by more than 25%, this approach provides promise for both fundamental and applied studies of gate-tuned devices structured on bulk crystal samples.
The absence of inversion symmetry leads to a strong spin-orbit splitting of the upper valence band of semiconducting single layer transition metal dichalchogenides such as MoS$_2$ or WS$_2$. This permits a direct comparison of the electron-phonon cou pling strength in states that only differ by their spin. Here, the electron-phonon coupling in the valence band maximum of single-layer WS$_2$ is studied by first principles calculations and angle-resolved photoemission. The coupling strength is found to be drastically different for the two spin-split branches, with calculated values of $lambda_K=$0.0021 and 0.40 for the upper and lower spin-split valence band of the free-standing layer, respectively. This difference is somewhat reduced when including scattering processes involving the Au(111) substrate present in the experiment and the experimental results confirm the strongly branch-dependent coupling strength.
Electron correlation effects in the half-metallic ferromagnet NiMnSb are investigated within a combined density functional and many-body approach. Starting from a realistic multi-orbital Hubbard-model including Mn and Ni-d orbitals, the many-body pro blem is addressed via the Variational Cluster Approach. The density of states obtained in the calculation shows a strong spectral weight transfer towards the Fermi level in the occupied conducting majority spin channel with respect to the uncorrelated case, as well as states with vanishing quasiparticle weight in the minority spin gap. Although the two features produce competing effects, the overall outcome is a strong reduction of the spin polarisation at the Fermi level with respect to the uncorrelated case. This result emphasizes the importance of correlation in this material.
Evidence of flat-band magnetism and half-metallicity in compressed twisted bilayer graphene is provided with first-principles calculations. We show that dynamic band-structure engineering in twisted bilayer graphene is possible by controlling the che mical composition with extrinsic doping, the interlayer coupling strength with pressure, and the magnetic ordering with external electric field. By varying the rotational order and reducing the interlayer separation an unbalanced distribution of charge density resulting in the spontaneous apparition of localized magnetic moments without disrupting the structural integrity of the bilayer. Weak exchange correlation between magnetic moments is estimated in large unit cells. External electric field switches the local magnetic ordering from ferromagnetic to anti-ferromagnetic. Substitutional doping shifts the chemical potential of one spin distribution and leads to half-metallicity. Flakes of compressed twisted bilayer graphene exhibit spontaneous magnetization, demonstrating that correlation between magnetic moments is not a necessary condition for their formation.

Ground state properties of the spin$-1/2$ Falicov-Kimball model on a triangular lattice in the presence of uniform external magnetic field are explored. Both the orbital and the Zeeman field-induced effects are taken into account and in each unit cel l only rational flux fractions are considered. Numerical results, obtained with the help of Monte Carlo simulation algorithm, reveal that the ground state properties strongly depend on the onsite Coulomb correlation between itinerant and localized electrons, orbital magnetic field as well as the Zeeman splitting. Strikingly, for the on-site Coulomb correlation $U/t approx 1$, the Zeeman splitting produces a phase transition from paramagnetic metal/insulator to ferromagnetic insulator/metal transition in the itinerant electron subsystem accompanied by the phase segregation to the bounded/regular phase in the localized electrons subsystem. For the onsite Coulomb correlation $U/t approx 5$, although no metal to insulator transition is observed but a magnetic phase transition from paramagnetic phase to ferromagnetic phase in the itinerant electron subsystem is observed with the Zeeman splitting. These results are applicable to the layered systems e.g. cobaltates, rare earth and transition metal dichalcogenides, $GdI_{2}$, $NaTiO_{2}$, $NaVO_{2}$ and $Be_{x}Zn_{1-x}O$ etc. It has been also proposed that the results can be realized in the optical lattices with mixtures of light atoms and heavy atoms using the cold atomic techniques.
