We present a new class of integrators for stiff PDEs. These integrators are generalizations of FLow AVeraging integratORS (FLAVORS) for stiff ODEs and SDEs introduced in [Tao, Owhadi and Marsden 2010] with the following properties: (i) Multiscale: they are based on flow averaging and have a computational cost determined by mesoscopic steps in space and time instead of microscopic steps in space and time; (ii) Versatile: the method is based on averaging the flows of the given PDEs (which may have hidden slow and fast processes). This bypasses the need for identifying explicitly (or numerically) the slow variables or reduced effective PDEs; (iii) Nonintrusive: A pre-existing numerical scheme resolving the microscopic time scale can be used as a black box and easily turned into one of the integrators in this paper by turning the large coefficients on over a microscopic timescale and off during a mesoscopic timescale; (iv) Convergent over two scales: strongly over slow processes and in the sense of measures over fast ones; (v) Structure-preserving: for stiff Hamiltonian PDEs (possibly on manifolds), they can be made to be multi-symplectic, symmetry-preserving (symmetries are group actions that leave the system invariant) in all variables and variational.

There has been an arising trend of adopting deep learning methods to study partial differential equations (PDEs). In this paper, we introduce a deep recurrent framework for solving time-dependent PDEs without generating large scale data sets. We prov ide a new perspective, that is, a different type of architecture through exploring the possible connections between traditional numerical methods (such as finite difference schemes) and deep neural networks, particularly convolutional and fully-connected neural networks. Our proposed approach will show its effectiveness and efficiency in solving PDE models with an integral form, in particular, we test on one-way wave equations and system of conservation laws.
We propose a generalized multiscale finite element method (GMsFEM) based on clustering algorithm to study the elliptic PDEs with random coefficients in the multi-query setting. Our method consists of offline and online stages. In the offline stage, w e construct a small number of reduced basis functions within each coarse grid block, which can then be used to approximate the multiscale finite element basis functions. In addition, we coarsen the corresponding random space through a clustering algorithm. In the online stage, we can obtain the multiscale finite element basis very efficiently on a coarse grid by using the pre-computed multiscale basis. The new GMsFEM can be applied to multiscale SPDE starting with a relatively coarse grid, without requiring the coarsest grid to resolve the smallest-scale of the solution. The new method offers considerable savings in solving multiscale SPDEs. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method for several multiscale stochastic problems without scale separation.
The blood flow model maintains the steady state solutions, in which the flux gradients are non-zero but exactly balanced by the source term. In this paper, we design high order finite difference weighted non-oscillatory (WENO) schemes to this model w ith such well-balanced property and at the same time keeping genuine high order accuracy. Rigorous theoretical analysis as well as extensive numerical results all indicate that the resulting schemes verify high order accuracy, maintain the well-balanced property, and keep good resolution for smooth and discontinuous solutions.

We consider quadrature formulas of high order in time based on Radau-type, L-stable implicit Runge-Kutta schemes to solve time dependent stiff PDEs. Instead of solving a large nonlinear system of equations, we develop a method that performs iterative deferred corrections to compute the solution at the collocation nodes of the quadrature formulas. The numerical stability is guaranteed by a dedicated operator splitting technique that efficiently handles the stiffness of the PDEs and provides initial and intermediate solutions to the iterative scheme. In this way the low order approximations computed by a tailored splitting solver of low algorithmic complexity are iteratively corrected to obtain a high order solution based on a quadrature formula. The mathematical analysis of the numerical errors and local order of the method is carried out in a finite dimensional framework for a general semi-discrete problem, and a time-stepping strategy is conceived to control numerical errors related to the time integration. Numerical evidence confirms the theoretical findings and assesses the performance of the method in the case of a stiff reaction-diffusion equation.
Learning time-dependent partial differential equations (PDEs) that govern evolutionary observations is one of the core challenges for data-driven inference in many fields. In this work, we propose to capture the essential dynamics of numerically chal lenging PDEs arising in multiscale modeling and simulation -- kinetic equations. These equations are usually nonlocal and contain scales/parameters that vary by several orders of magnitude. We introduce an efficient framework, Densely Connected Recurrent Neural Networks (DC-RNNs), by incorporating a multiscale ansatz and high-order implicit-explicit (IMEX) schemes into RNN structure design to identify analytic representations of multiscale and nonlocal PDEs from discrete-time observations generated from heterogeneous experiments. If present in the observed data, our DC-RNN can capture transport operators, nonlocal projection or collision operators, macroscopic diffusion limit, and other dynamics. We provide numerical results to demonstrate the advantage of our proposed framework and compare it with existing methods.
