Magnetar giant flares may excite vibrational modes of neutron stars. Here we compute an estimate of initial post-flare amplitudes of both the torsional modes in the magnetars crust and of the global f-modes. We show that while the torsional crustal modes can be strongly excited, only a small fraction of the flares energy is converted directly into the lowest-order f-modes. For a conventional model of a magnetar, with the external magnetic field of about 10^{15} Gauss, the gravitational-wave detection of these f-modes with advanced LIGO is unlikely.

Most gravitational waves (GWs) sources are moving relative to us. This motion is often closely related to the environment of the source and can thus provide crucial information about the formation of the source and its host. Recently, LIGO and Virgo detected for the first time the subdominant modes of GWs. We show that a motion of the center-of-mass of the source can affect these modes, where the effect is proportional to the velocity of the source. The effect on the GWs modes in turn affects the overall frequency of the GW, thus leading to a phase shift. We study the impact of this effect on LIGO/Virgo detections and show that it is detectable for sources with high mass ratios and inclinations. This effect breaks the degeneracy between mass and Doppler shift in GWs observations, and opens a new possibility of detecting the motion of a GWs source even for constant velocities.

Giant flares on soft gamma-ray repeaters that are thought to take place on magnetars release enormous energy in a short time interval. Their power can be explained by catastrophic instabilities occurring in the magnetic field configuration and the su bsequent magnetic reconnection. By analogy with the coronal mass ejection (CME) events on the Sun, we develop a theoretical model via an analytic approach for magnetar giant flares. In this model, the rotation and/or displacement of the crust causes the field to twist and deform, leading to flux rope formation in the magnetosphere and energy accumulation in the related configuration. When the energy and helicity stored in the configuration reach a threshold, the system loses its equilibrium, the flux rope is ejected outward in a catastrophic way, and magnetic reconnection helps the catastrophe develop to a plausible eruption. By taking SGR 1806 - 20 as an example, we calculate the free magnetic energy released in such an eruptive process and find that it is more than $10^{47}$ ergs, which is enough to power a giant flare. The released free magnetic energy is converted into radiative energy, kinetic energy and gravitational energy of the flux rope. We calculated the light curves of the eruptive processes for the giant flares of SGR 1806 - 20, SGR 0526-66 and SGR 1900+14, and compared them with the observational data. The calculated light curves are in good agreement with the observed light curves of giant flares.
In this paper we propose a new mechanism describing the initial spike of giant flares in the framework of the starquake model. We investigate the evolution of a plasma on a closed magnetic flux tube in the magnetosphere of a magnetar in the case of a sudden energy release and discuss the relationship with observations of giant flares. We perform one-dimensional numerical simulations of the relativistic magnetohydrodynamics in Schwarzschild geometry. We assume energy is injected at the footpoints of the loop by a hot star surface containing random perturbations of the transverse velocity. Alfven waves are generated and propagate upward, accompanying very hot plasma that is also continuously heated by nonlinearly generated compressive waves. We find that the front edges of the fireball regions collide at the top of the tube with their symmetrically launched counterparts. This collision results in an energy release which can describe the light curve of initial spikes of giant flares.

If observations confirm BICEP2s claim of a tensor-scalar ratio $rapprox 0.2$ on CMB scales, then the inflationary consistency relation $n_{t}=-r/8$ predicts a small negative value for the tensor spectral index $n_t$. We show that future CMB polarizat ion experiments should be able to confirm this prediction at several sigma. We also show how to properly extend the consistency relation to solar system scales, where the primordial gravitational wave density $Omega_{gw}$ could be measured by proposed experiments such as the Big Bang Observer. This would provide a far more stringent test of the consistency relation and access much more detailed information about the early universe.
We introduce a new family of primordial cosmological perturbations that are not described by traditional power spectra. At the linear level, these perturbations live in the kernel of the spatial Laplacian operator, and thus we call them cosmological zero modes. We compute the cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature and polarization anisotropy induced by these modes, and forecast their detection sensitivity using a cosmic-variance limited experiment. In particular, we consider two configurations for the zero modes: The first configuration consists of stochastic metric perturbations described by white noise on a holographic screen located at our cosmological horizon. The amplitude of the power spectrum of this white noise can be constrained to be $lesssim 9 times 10^{-14}$. The second configuration is a primordial monopole beyond our cosmological horizon. We show that such a monopole, with charge $Q$, can be detected in the CMB sky up to a distance of $11.6 ~ Q^{1/4}times$ horizon radius (or $160~ Q^{1/4}$ Gpc). More generally, observational probes of cosmological zero modes can shed light on non-perturbative phenomena in the primordial universe, beyond our observable horizon.
