We report the observation of Kondo physics in a spin- 3/2 hole quantum dot. The dot is formed close to pinch-off in a hole quantum wire defined in an undoped AlGaAs/GaAs heterostructure. We clearly observe two distinctive hallmarks of quantum dot Kondo physics. First, the Zeeman spin-splitting of the zero-bias peak in the differential conductance is independent of gate voltage. Second, this splitting is twice as large as the splitting for the lowest one-dimensional subband. We show that the Zeeman splitting of the zero-bias peak is highly-anisotropic, and attribute this to the strong spin-orbit interaction for holes in GaAs.

The Kondo effect is a key many-body phenomenon in condensed matter physics. It concerns the interaction between a localised spin and free electrons. Discovered in metals containing small amounts of magnetic impurities, it is now a fundamental mechani sm in a wide class of correlated electron systems. Control over single, localised spins has become relevant also in fabricated structures due to the rapid developments in nano-electronics. Experiments have already demonstrated artificial realisations of isolated magnetic impurities at metallic surfaces, nanometer-scale magnets, controlled transitions between two-electron singlet and triplet states, and a tunable Kondo effect in semiconductor quantum dots. Here, we report an unexpected Kondo effect realised in a few-electron quantum dot containing singlet and triplet spin states whose energy difference can be tuned with a magnetic field. This effect occurs for an even number of electrons at the degeneracy between singlet and triplet states. The characteristic energy scale is found to be much larger than for the ordinary spin-1/2 case.
We propose that two-channel orbital Kondo ``spin 1/2 conductance can be measured in a quantum dot at Coulomb Blockade with an odd number of electrons with contacts in a pillar configuration, if an orthogonal magnetic field induces an appropriate leve l crossing. At the zero-temperature strong coupling fixed point the conductance reaches the unitarity limit with a non-Fermi liquid sqrt(T)-law.
We theoretically investigate the Kondo effect of a T-shaped triple-quantum-dot structure, by means of the numerical renormalization group method. It is found that at the point of electron-hole symmetry, the systems entropy has opportunities to exhibi t three kinds of transition processes for different interdot couplings, with the decrease of temperature. This leads to the different pictures of the Kondo physics, including the three-stage Kondo effect. Next when the electron-hole symmetry is broken or the structural parameters are changed, the Kondo resonance can also be observed in the conductance spectrum. However, it shows alternative dependence on the relevant quantities, i.e., the Coulomb interaction and interdot couplings. All these phenomena exhibit the abundant and interesting Kondo physics in this system. We believe that this work can be helpful for further understanding the Kondo effect in the triple-quantum-dot structures.
We review our recent studies on the Kondo effect in the tunneling phenomena through quantum dot systems. Numerical methods to calculate reliable tunneling conductance are developed. In the first place, a case in which electrons of odd number occupy t he dot is studied, and experimental results are analyzed based on the calculated result. Tunneling anomaly in the even-number-electron occupation case, which is recently observed in experiment and is ascribed to the Kondo effect in the spin singlet-triplet cross over transition region, is also examined theoretically.

The thermopower of a Kondo-correlated gate-defined quantum dot is studied using a current heating technique. In the presence of spin correlations the thermopower shows a clear deviation from the semiclassical Mott relation between thermopower and con ductivity. The strong thermopower signal indicates a significant asymmetry in the spectral density of states of the Kondo resonance with respect to the Fermi energies of the reservoirs. The observed behavior can be explained within the framework of an Anderson-impurity model.
