We investigated the electronic structure of layered Mn oxide Bi3Mn4O12(NO3) with a Mn honeycomb lattice by x-ray absorption spectroscopy. The valence of Mn was determined to be 4+ with a small charge-transfer energy. We estimated the values of superexchange interactions up to the fourth nearest neighbors (J1, J2, J3, and J4) by unrestricted Hartree-Fock calculations and a perturbation method. We found that the absolute values of J1 through J4 are similar with positive (antiferromagnetic) J1 and J4, and negative (ferromagnetic) J2 and J3, due to Mn-O-O-Mn pathways activated by the smallness of charge-transfer energy. The negative J3 provides magnetic frustration in the honeycomb lattice to prevent long-range ordering.

We investigated the static and dynamic magnetic properties of the polar ferrimagnet Mn$_2$Mo$_3$O$_8$ in three magnetically ordered phases via magnetization, magnetic torque, and THz absorption spectroscopy measurements. The observed magnetic field d ependence of the spin-wave resonances, including Brillouin zone-center and zone-boundary excitations, magnetization, and torque, are well described by an extended two-sublattice antiferromagnetic classical mean-field model. In this orbitally quenched system, the competing weak easy-plane and easy-axis single-ion anisotropies of the two crystallographic sites are determined from the model and assigned to the tetra- and octahedral sites, respectively, by ab initio calculations.
Recent interest in topological nature in condensed matter physics has revealed the essential role of Berry curvature in anomalous Hall effect (AHE). However, since large Hall response originating from Berry curvature has been reported in quite limite d materials, the detailed mechanism remains unclear at present. Here, we report the discovery of a large AHE triggered by a pressure-induced magnetic phase transition in elemental $alpha$-Mn. The AHE is absent in the non-collinear antiferromagnetic phase at ambient pressure, whereas a large AHE is observed in the weak ferromagnetic phase under high pressure despite the small averaged moment of $sim 0.02 mu_B$/Mn. Our results indicate that the emergence of the AHE in $alpha$-Mn is governed by the symmetry of the underlying magnetic structure, providing a direct evidence of a switch between a zero and non-zero contribution of the Berry curvature across the phase boundary. $alpha$-Mn can be an elemental and tunable platform to reveal the role of Berry curvature in AHE.
We have investigated the volume collapse occurring in LaMnO3 unit cell using the anisotropic Potts model modified by two types of anisotropic interactions which has been used to study the change of Mn-O bonds lengths as function of temperature. The b ond lengths are related to the occupation of the orbits. The lattice parameters and the distortion modes have been investigated as well. We have shown that the collapse is due to the change of Mn-O bonds lengths change as the temperature is raised through the transition. It has been shown that all the parameters studied here decrease with increasing temperature in a narrow temperature range below TJT, and then undergoes a collapse at TJT. These results are in a good agreement with the published experimental results.
We present x-ray, neutron scattering and heat capacity data that reveal a coupled first-order magnetic and structural phase transition of the metastable mixed-valence post-spinel compound Mn$_3$O$_4$ at 210 K. Powder neutron diffraction measurements reveal a magnetic structure in which Mn$^{3+}$ spins align antiferromagnetically along the edge-sharing emph{a}-axis, with a magnetic propagation vector k = [1/2, 0, 0]. In contrast, the Mn$^{2+}$ spins, which are geometrically frustrated, do not order until a much lower temperature. Although the Mn$^{2+}$ spins do not directly participate in the magnetic phase transition at 210 K, structural refinements reveal a large atomic shift at this phase transition, corresponding to a physical motion of approximately 0.25 {AA} even though the crystal symmetry remains unchanged. This giant response is due to the coupled effect of built-in strain in the metastable post-spinel structure with the orbital realignment of the Mn$^{3+}$ ion.

Resonant in situ photoemission from Mn 3d states in Ga_{1-x}Mn_{x}As is reported for Mn concentrations down to very dilute limit of 0.1 at %. The properties of the peak at the valence-band maximum reveal an effective interaction between Mn 3d states for concentration as low as 2.5 %. Concentration-dependent spectral features are analyzed on the basis of first-principles calculations for systems with selected impurity positions as well as for random alloys.
