We present the results of Suzaku X-ray follow-up observation of weak-lensing-detected halos in the field around galaxy cluster ZwCl0823.2+0425. We clearly detected X-ray emission associated with most of these halos and determined their detailed physical parameters such as X-ray luminosity, temperature, and metal abundance, for the first time. We find that the X-ray luminosity - temperature relation for these halos agrees with former typical results. With mass determined from the weak gravitational lensing data, the mass-temperature relation for them is also investigated and found to be consistent with the prediction from a simple self-similar model and results of the previous studies with both lensing and X-ray data. We would like to emphasize that the self-similar scaling relation of mass and temperature is shown here for the first time using a weak-lensing selected sample, whereas previous studies of the mass scaling relation used X-ray-selected samples of clusters. Therefore, our study demonstrates importance of X-ray follow-up observations of shear-selected clusters, and shows that a joint X-ray and lensing analysis will be crucial for clusters discovered by the forthcoming weak-lensing surveys, such as the one planned with Subaru/Hyper-Suprime-Cam.

We review Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) afterglow follow-up observations being carried out by our group in Korea. We have been performing GRB follow-up observations using the 4-m UKIRT in Hawaii, the 2.1-m telescope at the McDonald observatory in Texas, the 1.5-m telescope at Maidanak observatory in Uzbekistan, the 1.8-m telescope Mt. Bohyun Optical Astronomy Observatory (BOAO) in Korea, and the 1.0-m remotely operated telescope in Mt. Lemmon, Arizona. We outline our facilities, and present highlights of our work, including the studies of high redshift GRBs at z > 5, and several other interesting bursts.

We conduct a joint X-ray and weak-lensing study of four relaxed galaxy clusters (Hydra A, A478, A1689 and A1835) observed by both Suzaku and Subaru out to virial radii, with an aim to understand recently-discovered unexpected feature of the ICM in cl uster outskirts. We show that the average hydrostatic-to-lensing total mass ratio for the four clusters decreases from sim 70% to sim 40% as the overdensity contrast decreases from 500 to the virial value. The average gas mass fraction from lensing total mass estimates increases with cluster radius and agrees with the cosmic mean baryon fraction within the virial radius, whereas the X-ray-based gas fraction considerably exceeds the cosmic values due to underestimation of the hydrostatic mass. We also develop a new advanced method for determining normalized cluster radial profiles for multiple X-ray observables by simultaneously taking into account both their radial dependence and multivariate scaling relations with weak-lensing masses. Although the four clusters span a range of halo mass, concentration, X-ray luminosity and redshift, we find that the gas entropy, pressure, temperature and density profiles are all remarkably self-similar when scaled with the lensing M_200 mass and r_200 radius. The entropy monotonically increases out to sim 0.5r_200 following the accretion shock heating model K(r)propto r^1.1, and flattens at simgt 0.5r_200.The universality of the scaled entropy profiles indicates that the thermalization mechanism over the entire cluster region (>0.1r_200) is controlled by gravitation in a common to all clusters, although the heating efficiency in the outskirts needs to be modified from the standard law.The bivariate scaling functions of the gas density and temperature reveal that the flattening of the outskirts entropy profile is caused by the steepening of the temperature, rather than the flattening of the gas density.
The Burst Observer and Optical Transient Exploring System (BOOTES) is a network of telescopes that allows the continuous monitoring of transient astrophysical sources. It was originally devoted to the study of the optical emission from gamma-ray burs ts (GRBs) that occur in the Universe. In this paper we show the initial results obtained using the spectrograph COLORES (mounted on BOOTES-2), when observing compact objects of diverse nature.
Most violent and energetic processes in our universe, including mergers of compact objects, explosions of massive stars and extreme accretion events, produce copious amounts of X-rays. X-ray follow-up is an efficient tool for identifying transients b ecause (1) X-rays can quickly localize transients with large error circles, and (2) X-rays reveal the nature of transients that may not have unique signatures at other wavelengths. In this white paper, we identify key science questions about several extragalactic multi-messenger and multi-wavelength transients, and demonstrate how X-ray follow-up helps answer these questions
We demonstrate the possibility of detecting tidal stripping of dark matter subhalos within galaxy groups using weak gravitational lensing. We have run ray-tracing simulations on galaxy catalogues from the Millennium Simulation to generate mock shape catalogues. The ray-tracing catalogues assume a halo model for galaxies and groups, using various models with different distributions of mass between galaxy and group halos to simulate different stages of group evolution. Using these mock catalogues, we forecast the lensing signals that will be detected around galaxy groups and satellite galaxies, as well as test two different methods for isolating the satellites lensing signals. A key challenge is to determine the accuracy to which group centres can be identified. We show that with current and ongoing surveys, it will possible to detect stripping in groups of mass 10^12--10^15 Msun.
