We propose that the observed cooling of the neutron star in Cassiopeia A is due to enhanced neutrino emission from the recent onset of the breaking and formation of neutron Cooper pairs in the 3P2 channel. We find that the critical temperature for this superfluid transition is ~0.5x10^9 K. The observed rapidity of the cooling implies that protons were already in a superconducting state with a larger critical temperature. Our prediction that this cooling will continue for several decades at the present rate can be tested by continuous monitoring of this neutron star.

We present a new model-independent (applicable for a broad range of equations of state) analysis of the neutrino emissivity due to triplet neutron pairing in neutron star cores. We find that the integrated neutrino luminosity of the Cooper Pair Forma tion (CPF) process can be written as a product of two factors. The first factor depends on the neutron star mass, radius and maximal critical temperature of neutron pairing in the core, $T_{Cn mathrm{max}}$, but not on the particular superfluidity model; it can be expressed by an analytical formula valid for many nucleon equations of state. The second factor depends on the shape of the critical temperature profile within the star, the ratio of the temperature $T$ to $T_{Cn mathrm{max}}$, but not on the maximal critical temperature itself. While this second factor depends on the superfluidity model, it obeys several model-independent constraints. This property allows one to analyse the thermal evolution of neutron stars with superfluid cores without relying on a specific model of their interiors. The constructed expressions allow us to perform a self-consistent analysis of spectral data and neutron star cooling theory. We apply these findings to the cooling neutron star in the Cassiopeia A supernova remnant using 14 sets of observations taken over 19 years. We constrain $T_{Cnmathrm{max}}$ to the range of $ (5-10)times 10^8$ K. This value depends weakly on the equation of state and superfluidity model, and will not change much if cooling is slower than the current data suggest. We also constrain the overall efficiency of the CPF neutrino luminosity.
We present a quantitative analysis of superfluidity and superconductivity in dense matter from observations of isolated neutron stars in the context of the minimal cooling model. Our new approach produces the best fit neutron triplet superfluid criti cal temperature, the best fit proton singlet superconducting critical temperature, and their associated statistical uncertainties. We find that the neutron triplet critical temperature is likely $2.09^{+4.37}_{-1.41} times 10^{8}$ K and that the proton singlet critical temperature is $7.59^{+2.48}_{-5.81} times 10^{9}$ K. However, we also show that this result only holds if the Vela neutron star is not included in the data set. If Vela is included, the gaps increase significantly to attempt to reproduce Velas lower temperature given its young age. Further including neutron stars believed to have carbon atmospheres increases the neutron critical temperature and decreases the proton critical temperature. Our method demonstrates that continued observations of isolated neutron stars can quantitatively constrain the nature of superfluidity in dense matter.

We demonstrate that the high-quality cooling data observed for the young neutron star in the supernova remnant Cassiopeia A over the past 10 years--as well as all other reliably known temperature data of neutron stars--can be comfortably explained wi thin the nuclear medium cooling scenario. The cooling rates of this scenario account for medium-modified one-pion exchange in dense matter and polarization effects in the pair-breaking formations of superfluid neutrons and protons. Crucial for the successful description of the observed data is a substantial reduction of the thermal conductivity, resulting from a suppression of both the electron and nucleon contributions to it by medium effects. We also find that possibly in as little as about ten years of continued observation, the data may tell whether or not fast cooling processes are active in this neutron star.

We show that the neutron star in the transient system MXB~1659-29 has a core neutrino luminosity that substantially exceeds that of the modified Urca reactions (i.e., $n+nto n+p+e^{-}+bar{ u}_{e}$ and inverse) and is consistent with the direct Urca r eactions ($nto p+e^{-}+bar{ u}_{e}$ and inverse) occurring in a small fraction of the core. Observations of the thermal relaxation of the neutron star crust following 2.5 years of accretion allow us to measure the energy deposited into the core during accretion, which is then reradiated as neutrinos, and infer the core temperature. For a nucleonic core, this requires that the nucleons are unpaired and that the proton fraction exceed a critical value to allow the direct Urca reaction to proceed. The neutron star in MXB~1659-29 is the first with a firmly detected thermal component in its X-ray spectrum that needs a fast neutrino cooling process. Measurements of the temperature variation of the neutron star core during quiescence would place an upper limit on the core specific heat and serve as a check on the fraction of the neutron star core in which nucleons are unpaired.

The impact of nuclear physics theories on cooling of isolated neutron stars is analyzed. Physical properties of neutron star matter important for cooling are reviewed such as composition, the equation of state, superfluidity of various baryon species , neutrino emission mechanisms. Theoretical results are compared with observations of thermal radiation from neutron stars. Current constraints on theoretical models of dense matter, derived from such a comparison, are formulated.
