We demonstrate a new way of studying interplanetary magnetic field -- Ground State Alignment (GSA). Instead of sending thousands of space probes, GSA allows magnetic mapping with any ground telescope facilities equipped with spectropolarimeter. The polarization of spectral lines that are pumped by the anisotropic radiation from the Sun is influenced by the magnetic realignment, which happens for magnetic field (<1G). As a result, the linear polarization becomes an excellent tracer of the embedded magnetic field. The method is illustrated by our synthetic observations of the Jupiters Io and comet Halley. Polarization at each point was constructed according to the local magnetic field detected by spacecrafts. Both spatial and temporal variations of turbulent magnetic field can be traced with this technique as well. The influence of magnetic field on the polarization of scattered light is discussed in detail. For remote regions like the IBEX ribbons discovered at the boundary of interstellar medium, GSA provides a unique diagnostics of magnetic field.

We consider an asymmetric 0-pi Josephson junction consisting of 0 and pi regions of different lengths L_0 and L_pi. As predicted earlier this system can be described by an effective sine-Gordon equation for the spatially averaged phase psi so that th e effective current-phase relation of this system includes a emph{negative} second harmonic ~sin(2 psi). If its amplitude is large enough, the ground state of the junction is doubly degenerate psi=pmvarphi, where varphi depends on the amplitudes of the first and second harmonics. We study the behavior of such a junction in an applied magnetic field H and demonstrate that H induces an additional term ~H cos(psi) in the effective current-phase relation. This results in a non-trivial ground state emph{tunable} by magnetic field. The dependence of the critical current on H allows for revealing the ground state experimentally.
We report the ground-level detection of a Galactic Cosmic-Ray (GCR) flux enhancement lasting $sim$ 17 hr and associated with the passage of a magnetic flux rope (MFR) over the Earth. The MFR was associated with a slow Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) caus ed by the eruption of a filament on 2016 October 9. Due to the quiet conditions during the eruption and the lack of interactions during the interplanetary CME transport to the Earth, the associated MFR preserved its configuration and reached the Earth with a strong magnetic field, low density, and a very low turbulence level compared to the local background, thus generating the ideal conditions to redirect and guide GCRs (in the $sim$ 8 to 60 GV rigidity range) along the magnetic field of the MFR. An important negative $B_Z$ component inside the MFR caused large disturbances in the geomagnetic field and a relatively strong geomagnetic storm. However, these disturbances are not the main factors behind the GCR enhancement. Instead, we found that the major factor was the alignment between the MFR axis and the asymptotic direction of the observer.

We report on the detailed and systematic study of field-line twist and length distributions within magnetic flux ropes embedded in Interplanetary Coronal Mass Ejections (ICMEs). The Grad-Shafranov reconstruction method is utilized together with a con stant-twist nonlinear force-free (Gold-Hoyle) flux rope model to reveal the close relation between the field-line twist and length in cylindrical flux ropes, based on in-situ Wind spacecraft measurements. We show that the field-line twist distributions within interplanetary flux ropes are inconsistent with the Lundquist model. In particular we utilize the unique measurements of magnetic field-line lengths within selected ICME events as provided by Kahler et al. (2011) based on energetic electron burst observations at 1 AU and the associated type III radio emissions detected by the Wind spacecraft. These direct measurements are compared with our model calculations to help assess the flux-rope interpretation of the embedded magnetic structures. By using the different flux-rope models, we show that the in-situ direct measurements of field-line lengths are consistent with a flux-rope structure with spiral field lines of constant and low twist, largely different from that of the Lundquist model, especially for relatively large-scale flux ropes.
Layered trigonal EuMg$_2$Bi$_2$ is reported to be a topological semimetal that hosts multiple Dirac points that may be gapped or split by the onset of magnetic order. Here, we report zero-field single-crystal neutron-diffraction and bulk magnetic sus ceptibility measurements versus temperature $chi(T)$ of EuMg$_2$Bi$_2$ that show the intraplane ordering is ferromagnetic (Eu$^{2+},, S= 7/2$) with the moments aligned in the $ab$-plane while adjacent layers are aligned antiferromagnetically (i.e., A-type antiferromagnetism) below the Neel temperature.
Elucidating the nature of the magnetism of a high-temperature superconductor is crucial for establishing its pairing mechanism. The parent compounds of the cuprate and iron-pnictide superconductors exhibit Neel and stripe magnetic order, respectively . However, FeSe, the structurally simplest iron-based superconductor, shows nematic order (Ts = 90 K), but not magnetic order in the parent phase, and its magnetic ground state is intensely debated. Here, we report inelastic neutron-scattering experiments that reveal both stripe and Neel spin fluctuations over a wide energy range at 110 K. On entering the nematic phase, a substantial amount of spectral weight is transferred from the Neel to the stripe spin fluctuations. Moreover, the total fluctuating magnetic moment of FeSe is ~ 60% larger than that in the iron pnictide BaFe2As2. Our results suggest that FeSe is a novel S = 1 nematic quantum-disordered paramagnet interpolating between the Neel and stripe magnetic instabilities.
