We performed optical spectroscopy measurement on single crystal of CeTe$_3$, a rare-earth element tri-telluride charge density wave (CDW) compound. The optical spectra are found to display very strong temperature dependence. Besides a large and pronounced CDW energy gap being present already at room temperature as observed in earlier studies, the present measurement revealed the formation of another energy gap at smaller energy scale at low temperature. The second CDW gap removes the electrons near E$_F$ which undergo stronger scattering. The study yields evidence for the presence of multiple CDW orders or strong fluctuations in the light rare-earth element tri-telluride.

The parkerite-type ternary chalcogenide Bi$_2$Rh$_3$Se$_2$ was discovered to be a charge density wave (CDW) superconductor. However, there was a debate on whether the observed phase transition at 240 K could be attributed to the formation of CDW orde r. To address the issue, we performed optical spectroscopy and ultrafast pump-probe measurements on single crystal samples of Bi$_2$Rh$_3$Se$_2$. Our optical conductivity measurement reveals clearly the formation of an energy gap with associated spectral change only at low energies, yielding strong evidence for a CDW phase transition at 240 K. Time resolved pump-probe measurement provides further support for the CDW phase transition. The amplitude and relaxation time of quasiparticles extracted from the photoinduced reflectivity show strong enhancement near transition temperature, yielding further evidence for the CDW energy gap formation. Additionally, a collective mode is identified from the oscillations in the pump-probe time delay at low temperature. This mode, whose frequency decreases gradually at elevated temperature, could be naturally attributed to the amplitude mode of CDW state.
We present new data on the pressure dependence at 300 K of the optical reflectivity of CeTe$_3$, which undergoes a charge-density-wave (CDW) phase transition well above room temperature. The collected data cover an unprecedented broad spectral range from the infrared up to the ultraviolet, which allows a robust determination of the gap as well as of the fraction of the Fermi surface affected by the formation of the CDW condensate. Upon compressing the lattice there is a progressive closing of the gap inducing a transfer of spectral weight from the gap feature into the Drude component. At frequencies above the CDW gap we also identify a power-law behavior, consistent with findings along the $R$Te$_3$ series (i.e., chemical pressure) and suggestive of a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid scenario at high energy scales. This newest set of data is placed in the context of our previous investigations of this class of materials and allows us to revisit important concepts for the physics of CDW state in layered-like two-dimensional systems.

The occurrences of collective quantum states, such as superconductivity (SC) and charge- or spin-densitywaves (CDWs or SDWs), are among the most fascinating phenomena in solids. To date much effort has been made to explore the interplay between diffe rent orders, yet little is known about the relationship of multiple orders of the same type. Here we report optical spectroscopy study on CDWs in the rare-earth tri-telluride compounds RTe3 (R = rare earth elements). Besides the prior reported two CDW orders, the study reveals unexpectedly the presence of a third CDW order in the series which evolves systematically with the size of R element. With increased chemical pressure, the first and third CDW orders are both substantially suppressed and compete with the second one by depleting the low energy spectral weight. A complete phase diagram for the multiple CDW orders in this series is established.

We present optical spectroscopy measurements on rare-earth ditelluride single crystals of LaTe$_{1.95}$ and CeTe$_{1.95-x}$Se$_x$ (x=0 and 0.16). The measurements reveal formation of charge density wave energy gaps at rather high energy levels, e.g. 2$Deltasim$ 8500 cm for LaTe$_{1.95}$, and 6800 cm for CeTe$_{1.95}$. More strikingly, the study reveals that, different from the rare-earth tri-tellurides, the Te vacancies and disorder effect play a key role in the low-energy charge excitations of ditelluride systems. Although an eminent peak is observed between 800 and 1500 cm in conductivity spectra for LaTe$_{1.95}$, and CeTe$_{1.95-x}$Se$_x$ (x=0. 0.16), our analysis indicates that it could not be attributed to the formation of a small energy gap, instead it could be well accounted for by the localization modified Drude model. Our study also indicates that the low-tempreature optical spectroscopic features are distinctly different from a semiconducting CDW state with entirely gapped Fermi surfaces.
We report optical spectra of Lu$_5$Ir$_4$Si$_{10}$ and Er$_5$Ir$_4$Si$_{10}$, exhibiting the phenomenon of coexisting superconductivity or antiferromagnetism and charge density wave (CDW) order. We measure the maximum value of the charge density wave gap present on part of the Fermi surface of Lu5Ir4Si10, corresponding to a ratio 2Delta/k_B T_CDW approx 10, well above the value in the limit of weak electron-phonon coupling. Strong electron-phonon coupling was confirmed by analyzing the optical conductivity with the Holstein model describing the electron-phonon interactions, indicating the coupling to phonons centered at 30 meV, with a coupling constant lambda approx 2.6. Finally we provide evidence that approximately 16 % of the Fermi surface of Lu5Ir4Si10 becomes gapped in the CDW state.
