We present the first results of the Fermilab Muon g-2 Experiment for the positive muon magnetic anomaly $a_mu equiv (g_mu-2)/2$. The anomaly is determined from the precision measurements of two angular frequencies. Intensity variation of high-energy positrons from muon decays directly encodes the difference frequency $omega_a$ between the spin-precession and cyclotron frequencies for polarized muons in a magnetic storage ring. The storage ring magnetic field is measured using nuclear magnetic resonance probes calibrated in terms of the equivalent proton spin precession frequency ${tilde{omega}^{}_p}$ in a spherical water sample at 34.7$^{circ}$C. The ratio $omega_a / {tilde{omega}^{}_p}$, together with known fundamental constants, determines $a_mu({rm FNAL}) = 116,592,040(54)times 10^{-11}$ (0.46,ppm). The result is 3.3 standard deviations greater than the standard model prediction and is in excellent agreement with the previous Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) E821 measurement. After combination with previous measurements of both $mu^+$ and $mu^-$, the new experimental average of $a_mu({rm Exp}) = 116,592,061(41)times 10^{-11}$ (0.35,ppm) increases the tension between experiment and theory to 4.2 standard deviations

This paper introduces a new approach to measure the muon magnetic moment anomaly $a_{mu} = (g-2)/2$, and the muon electric dipole moment (EDM) $d_{mu}$ at the J-PARC muon facility. The goal of our experiment is to measure $a_{mu}$ and $d_{mu}$ using an independent method with a factor of 10 lower muon momentum, and a factor of 20 smaller diameter storage-ring solenoid compared with previous and ongoing muon $g-2$ experiments with unprecedented quality of the storage magnetic field. Additional significant differences from the present experimental method include a factor of 1,000 smaller transverse emittance of the muon beam (reaccelerated thermal muon beam), its efficient vertical injection into the solenoid, and tracking each decay positron from muon decay to obtain its momentum vector. The precision goal for $a_{mu}$ is statistical uncertainty of 450 part per billion (ppb), similar to the present experimental uncertainty, and a systematic uncertainty less than 70 ppb. The goal for EDM is a sensitivity of $1.5times 10^{-21}~ecdotmbox{cm}$.
We calculate the contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment hadronic vacuum polarization from {the} connected diagrams of up and down quarks, omitting electromagnetism. We employ QCD gauge-field configurations with dynamical $u$, $d$, $s$, an d $c$ quarks and the physical pion mass, and analyze five ensembles with lattice spacings ranging from $a approx 0.06$ to~0.15~fm. The up- and down-quark masses in our simulations have equal masses $m_l$. We obtain, in this world where all pions have the mass of the $pi^0$, $10^{10} a_mu^{ll}({rm conn.}) = 637.8,(8.8)$, in agreement with independent lattice-QCD calculations. We then combine this value with published lattice-QCD results for the connected contributions from strange, charm, and bottom quarks, and an estimate of the uncertainty due to the fact that our calculation does not include strong-isospin breaking, electromagnetism, or contributions from quark-disconnected diagrams. Our final result for the total $mathcal{O}(alpha^2)$ hadronic vacuum polarization to the muons anomalous magnetic moment is~$10^{10}a_mu^{rm HVP,LO} = 699(15)_{u,d}(1)_{s,c,b}$, where the errors are from the light-quark and heavy-quark contributions, respectively. Our result agrees with both {it ab-initio} lattice-QCD calculations and phenomenological determinations from experimental $e^+e^-$-scattering data. It is $1.3sigma$ below the no new physics value of the hadronic-vacuum-polarization contribution inferred from combining the BNL E821 measurement of $a_mu$ with theoretical calculations of the other contributions.

The muon anomalous magnetic moment measurement, when compared with theory, can be used to test many extensions to the standard model. The most recent measurement made by the Brookhaven E821 Collaboration reduces the uncertainty on the world average o f a_mu to 0.7 ppm, comparable in precision to theory. This paper describes the experiment and the current theoretical efforts to establish a correct standard model reference value for the muon anomaly.
The MUonE experiment aims at a precision measurement of the hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the muon $g-2$, via elastic muon-electron scattering. Since the current muon $g-2$ anomaly hints at the potential existence of new physics (NP) r elated to the muon, the question then arises as to whether the measurement of hadronic vacuum polarization in MUonE could be affected by the same NP as well. In this work, we address this question by investigating a variety of NP explanations of the muon $g-2$ anomaly via either vector or scalar mediators with either flavor-universal, non-universal or even flavor-violating couplings to electrons and muons. We derive the corresponding MUonE sensitivity in each case and find that the measurement of hadronic vacuum polarization at the MUonE is not vulnerable to any of these NP scenarios.
