Renewal-anomalous-heterogeneous files are solved. A simple file is made of Brownian hard spheres that diffuse stochastically in an effective 1D channel. Generally, Brownian files are heterogeneous: the spheres diffusion coefficients are distributed and the initial spheres density is non-uniform. In renewal-anomalous files, the distribution of waiting times for individual jumps is exponential as in Brownian files, yet obeys: {psi}_{alpha} (t)~t^(-1-{alpha}), 0<{alpha}<1. The file is renewal as all the particles attempt to jump at the same time. It is shown that the mean square displacement (MSD) in a renewal-anomalous-heterogeneous file, <r^2>, obeys, <r^2>~[<r^2>_{nrml}]^{alpha}, where <r^2 >_{nrml} is the MSD in the corresponding Brownian file. This scaling is an outcome of an exact relation (derived here) connecting probability density functions of Brownian files and renewal-anomalous files. It is also shown that non-renewal-anomalous files are slower than the corresponding renewal ones.

The dynamics of classical hard particles in a quasi one-dimensional channel were studied since the 1960s and used for explaining processes in chemistry, physics and biology and in applications. Here we show that in a previously un-described file made of anomalous, independent, particles (with jumping times taken from, {psi}_{alpha} (t) t^(-1-{alpha}), 0<{alpha}<1), particles form clusters. At steady state, the percentage of particles in clusters is about, surd(1-{alpha}^3), only for anomalous {alpha}, characterizing the criticality of a phase transition. The asymptotic mean square displacement per particle in the file is about, log^2(t). We show numerically that this exciting phenomenon of a phase transition is very stable, and relate it with the mysterious phenomenon of rafts in biological membranes, and with regulation of biological channels.

The infection pathway of virus in cytoplasm of a living cell is studied from the viewpoint of diffusion theory. The cytoplasm plays a role of a medium for stochastic motion of the virus contained in the endosome as well as the free virus. It is exper imentally known that the exponent of anomalous diffusion fluctuates in localized areas of the cytoplasm. Here, generalizing fractional kinetic theory, such fluctuations are described in terms of the exponent locally distributed over the cytoplasm, and a theoretical proposition is presented for its statistical form. The proposed fluctuations may be examined in an experiment of heterogeneous diffusion in the infection pathway.
The cytoskeleton of eukaryotic cells provides mechanical support and governs intracellular transport. These functions rely on the complex mechanical properties of networks of semiflexible protein filaments. Recent theoretical interest has focused on mesoscopic properties of such networks and especially on the effect of local, non-affine bending deformations on mechanics. Here, we study the impact of local network deformations on the scale-dependent mobility of probe particles in entangled networks of semiflexible actin filaments by high-bandwidth microrheology. We find that micron-sized particles in these networks experience two opposing non-continuum elastic effects: entropic depletion reduces the effective network rigidity, while local non-affine deformations of the network substantially enhance the rigidity at low frequencies. We show that a simple model of lateral bending of filaments embedded in a viscoelastic background leads to a scaling regime for the apparent elastic modulus G(omega) sim omega^{9/16}, closely matching the experiments. These results provide quantitative evidence for how different a semiflexible polymer network can feel for small objects, and they demonstrate how non-affine bending deformations can be dominant for the mobility of vesicles and organelles in the cell.

Normal dynamics in a quasi-one-dimensional channel of length L (toinfty) of N hard spheres are analyzed. The spheres are heterogeneous: each has a diffusion coefficient D that is drawn from a probability density function (PDF), W D^(-{gamma}), for sm all D, where 0leq{gamma}<1. The initial spheres density {rho} is non-uniform and scales with the distance (from the origin) l as, {rho} l^(-a), 0leqaleq1. An approximation for the N-particle PDF for this problem is derived. From this solution, scaling law analysis and numerical simulations, we show here that the mean square displacement for a particle in such a system obeys, <r^2>~t^(1-{gamma})/(2c-{gamma}), where c=1/(1+a). The PDF of the tagged particle is Gaussian in position. Generalizations of these results are considered.

Digital stiffness programmability is fulfilled with a heterogeneous mechanical metamaterial. The prototype consists of an elastomer matrix containing tessellations of diamond shaped cavities selectively confined with semi-rigid plastic beam inserts a long their diagonals. Unit-cell perturbations by placing or removing each insert reshape the global constitutive relation whose lower and upper bounds corresponding to the configurations with all holes empty and all inserts in place, respectively, are significantly distant from each other thanks to a gap between the moduli of the elastomer and the inserts. Bidirectional operation is achieved by mixing insert orientations where longitudinal inserts enhance the macroscopic stiffness in compression and transverse ones tension. Arranged digital representations of such local insert states form the explicit encoding of global patterns so that systematic stiffness programming with minimal changes in mass is enabled both statically and in situ. These characteristics establish a new paradigm in actively tuning vibration isolation systems according to shifts in the resonance of base structures.
