In a recent publication [Phys. Rev. A 79, 065602 (2009)] it was shown that an avoided-crossing resonance can be defined in different ways, according to level-structural or dynamical aspects, which do not coincide in general. Here a simple $3$-level system in a $Lambda$ configuration is discussed, where the difference between both definitions of the resonance may be observed. We also discuss the details of a proposed experiment to observe this difference, using microwave fields coupling hyperfine magnetic sublevels in alkali atoms.

We examine structural and dynamical properties of quantum resonances associated with an avoided crossing and identify the parameter shifts where these properties attain maximal or extreme values, first at a general level, and then for a two-level sys tem coupled to a harmonic oscillator, of the type commonly found in quantum optics. Finally the results obtained are exemplified and applied to optimize the fidelity and speed of quantum gates in trapped ions.
We study the effect of a control beam on a Lambda electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) system in 87Rb. The control beam couples one ground state to another excited state forming a four level N-system. Phase coherent beams to drive the N-sys tem are produced using a double injection scheme. We show that the control beam can be used to Stark shift or split the EIT resonance. Finally, we show that the when the control beam is on-resonance one observes a Doppler-free and sub-natural absorptive resonance with a width of order 100 kHz. Crucially, this narrow absorptive resonance only occurs when atoms with a range of velocities are present, as is the case in a room temperature vapour.
We propose a scheme in which entanglement can be transferred from atoms (discrete variables) to entangled states of cavity fields (continuous variables). The cavities play the role of a kind of quantum memory for entanglement, in such a way that it i s possible to retrieve it back to the atoms. In our method, two three level atoms in a lambda configuration, previously entangled, are set to interact with single mode cavity fields prepared in coherent states. During the process, one e-bit of entanglement may be deposited in the cavities in an efficient way. We also show that the stored entanglement may be transferred back to flying atoms.
We study the existence and location of the resonances of a $2times 2$ semiclassical system of coupled Schrodinger operators, in the case where the two electronic levels cross at some point, and one of them is bonding, while the other one is anti-bond ing. Considering energy levels just above that of the crossing, we find the asymptotics of both the real parts and the imaginary parts of the resonances close to such energies. This is a continuation of our previous works where we considered energy levels around that of the crossing.
The theoretical community has found interest in the ability of a two-level atom to generate a strong many-body interaction with light under pulsed excitation. Single-photon generation is the most well-known effect, where a short Gaussian laser pulse is converted into a Lorentzian single-photon wavepacket. However, recent proposals have surprisingly suggested that scattering with intense laser fields off a two-level atom may generate oscillations in two-photon emission that are out of phase with its Rabi oscillations, as the power of the pulse increases. Here, we provide an intuitive explanation for these oscillations using a quantum trajectory approach and show how they may preferentially result in emission of two-photon pulses. Experimentally, we observe signatures of these oscillations by measuring the bunching of photon pulses scattered off a two-level quantum system. Our theory and measurements provide crucial insight into the re-excitation process that plagues on-demand single-photon sources while suggesting the production of novel multi-photon states.
