We study, using simulated experiments inspired by thin film magnetic domain patterns, the feasibility of phase retrieval in X-ray diffractive imaging in the presence of intrinsic charge scattering given only photon-shot-noise limited diffraction data. We detail a reconstruction algorithm to recover the samples magnetization distribution under such conditions, and compare its performance with that of Fourier transform holography. Concerning the design of future experiments, we also chart out the reconstruction limits of diffractive imaging when photon- shot-noise and the intensity of charge scattering noise are independently varied. This work is directly relevant to the time-resolved imaging of magnetic dynamics using coherent and ultrafast radiation from X-ray free electron lasers and also to broader classes of diffractive imaging experiments which suffer noisy data, missing data or both.

We present a supervised learning method to learn the propagator map of a dynamical system from partial and noisy observations. In our computationally cheap and easy-to-implement framework a neural network consisting of random feature maps is trained sequentially by incoming observations within a data assimilation procedure. By employing Takens embedding theorem, the network is trained on delay coordinates. We show that the combination of random feature maps and data assimilation, called RAFDA, outperforms standard random feature maps for which the dynamics is learned using batch data.
Interface structures in complex oxides remain one of the active areas of condensed matter physics research, largely enabled by recent advances in scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). Yet the nature of the STEM contrast in which the struc ture is projected along the given direction precludes separation of possible structural models. Here, we utilize deep convolutional neural networks (DCNN) trained on simulated 4D scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) datasets to predict structural descriptors of interfaces. We focus on the widely studied interface between LaAlO3 and SrTiO3, using dynamical diffraction theory and leveraging high performance computing to simulate thousands of possible 4D STEM datasets to train the DCNN to learn properties of the underlying structures on which the simulations are based. We validate the DCNN on simulated data and show that it is possible (with >95% accuracy) to identify a physically rough from a chemically diffuse interface and achieve 85% accuracy in determination of buried step positions within the interface. The method shown here is general and can be applied for any inverse imaging problem where forward models are present.
Deep neural networks are used to model the magnetization dynamics in magnetic thin film elements. The magnetic states of a thin film element can be represented in a low dimensional space. With convolutional autoencoders a compression ratio of 1024:1 was achieved. Time integration can be performed in the latent space with a second network which was trained by solutions of the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation. Thus the magnetic response to an external field can be computed quickly.
Metallic glasses have attracted considerable interest in recent years due to their unique combination of superb properties and processability. Predicting bulk metallic glass formers from known parameters remains a challenge and the search for new sys tems is still performed by trial and error. It has been speculated that some sort of confusion during crystallization of the crystalline phases competing with glass formation could play a key role. Here, we propose a heuristic descriptor quantifying confusion and demonstrate its validity by detailed experiments on two well-known glass forming alloy systems. With the insight provided by these results, we develop a robust model for predicting glass formation ability based on the spectral decomposition of geometrical and energetic features of crystalline phases calculated ab-initio in the AFLOW high throughput framework. Our findings indicate that the formation of metallic glass phases could be a much more common phenomenon than currently estimated, with more than 17% of binary alloy systems being potential glass formers. Our approach is capable of pinpointing favorable compositions, overcoming a major bottleneck hindering the discovery of new materials. Hence, it is demonstrated that smart descriptors, based solely on the energetics and structure of competing crystalline phases calculated from first-principles and available in online databases, others the sought-after key for accelerated discovery of novel metallic glasses.
We use a machine learning approach to identify the importance of microstructure characteristics in causing magnetization reversal in ideally structured large-grained Nd$_2$Fe$_{14}$B permanent magnets. The embedded Stoner-Wohlfarth method is used as a reduced order model for determining local switching field maps which guide the data-driven learning procedure. The predictor model is a random forest classifier which we validate by comparing with full micromagnetic simulations in the case of small granular test structures. In the course of the machine learning microstructure analysis the most important features explaining magnetization reversal were found to be the misorientation and the position of the grain within the magnet. The lowest switching fields occur near the top and bottom edges of the magnet. While the dependence of the local switching field on the grain orientation is known from theory, the influence of the position of the grain on the local coercive field strength is less obvious. As a direct result of our findings of the machine learning analysis we show that edge hardening via Dy-diffusion leads to higher coercive fields.
