In this paper, we provide an approach for the calculation of one-loop effective actions, vacuum energies, and spectral counting functions and discuss the application of this approach in some physical problems. Concretely, we construct the equations for these three quantities; this allows us to achieve them by directly solving equations. In order to construct the equations, we introduce shifted local one-loop effective actions, shifted local vacuum energies, and local spectral counting functions. We solve the equations of one-loop effective actions, vacuum energies, and spectral counting functions for free massive scalar fields in $mathbb{R}^{n}$, scalar fields in three-dimensional hyperbolic space $H_{3}$ (the Euclidean Anti-de Sitter space $AdS_{3}$), in $H_{3}/Z$ (the geometry of the Euclidean BTZ black hole), and in $S^{1}$, and the Higgs model in a $(1+1)$-dimensional finite interval. Moreover, in the above cases, we also calculate the spectra from the counting functions. Besides exact solutions, we give a general discussion on approximate solutions and construct the general series expansion for one-loop effective actions, vacuum energies, and spectral counting functions. In doing this, we encounter divergences. In order to remove the divergences, renormalization procedures are used. In this approach, these three physical quantities are regarded as spectral functions in the spectral problem.

The in-out formalism is a systematic and powerful method for finding the effective actions in an electromagnetic field and a curved spacetime provided that the field equation has explicitly known solutions. The effective action becomes complex when p airs of charged particles are produced due to an electric field and curved spacetime. This may lead to a conjecture of one-to-one correspondence between the vacuum polarization (real part) and the vacuum persistence (imaginary part). We illustrate the one-loop effective action in a constant electric field in a Minkowski spacetime and in a uniform electric field in a two-dimensional (anti-) de sitter space.
We review past and present results on the non-local form-factors of the effective action of semiclassical gravity in two and four dimensions computed by means of a covariant expansion of the heat kernel up to the second order in the curvatures. We di scuss the importance of these form-factors in the construction of mass-dependent beta functions for the Newtons constant and the other gravitational couplings.

We compute the one-loop beta-functions for renormalisable quantum gravity coupled to scalars using the co-ordinate space approach and generalised Schwinger De Witt technique. We resolve apparent contradictions with the corresponding momentum space ca lculations, and indicate how our results also resolve similar inconsistencies in the fermion case.

We consider the one-loop five-graviton amplitude in type II string theory calculated in the light-cone gauge. Although it is not possible to explicitly evaluate the integrals over the positions of the vertex operators, a low-energy expansion can be o btained, which can then be used to infer terms in the low-energy effective action. After subtracting diagrams due to known D^{2n}R^4 terms, we show the absence of one-loop R^5 and D^2R^5 terms and determine the exact structure of the one-loop D^4R^5 terms where, interestingly, the coefficient in front of the D^4R^5 terms is identical to the coefficient in front of the D^6R^4 term. Finally, we show that, up to D^6R^4 ~ D^4R^5, the epsilon_{10} terms package together with the t_8 terms in the usual combination (t_8t_8pm{1/8}epsilon_{10}epsilon_{10}).
