We investigated the radiation pattern of an optical rod antenna and found that it had many features compared with its conventional radio-wave equivalents. After defining a parameter {Lambda} = {lambda}eff /{lambda}, which was the ratio of the effective wavelength of the rod antenna to the incident wavelength, we found that {Lambda} had a great influence on the radiation pattern. Even the radiation pattern with a higher resonant order is without side lobes and results in a sharper directivity, which provides new design flexibilities in improving the directivities of the optical antennas.

We show that, a metasurface composed of subwavelength metallic slit array embedded in an asymmetric environment can exhibit either extraordinary optical transmission (EOT) or extraordinary optical diffraction (EOD). By employing an analytical model e xpansion method and the diffraction order chart in k-vector space, we found that the resonance decaying pathway of the local slit cavity mode can be tuned to either 0th or -1st diffraction order by changing the parallel wavevector, which gives rise to enhanced 0th transmission (EOT) of the structure for small incident angles, and enhanced -1st diffraction (EOD) for large incident angles. Based on this appealing feature, a multifunctional metasurface that can switch its functionality between transmission filter, mirror and off-axis lens is demonstrated. Our findings provide a convenient way to construct multifunctional integrated optical devices on a single planar device.

In this paper, we employ an antireflective coating which comprises of inverted pi shaped metallic grooves to manipulate the behaviour of a TM-polarized plane wave transmitted through a periodic nanoslit array. At normal incidence, such scheme can not only retain the optical curtain effect in the output region, but also generate the extraordinary transmission of light through the nanoslits with the total transmission efficiency as high as 90%. Besides, we show that the spatially invariant field distribution in the output region as well as the field distribution of resonant modes around the inverted pi shaped grooves can be reproduced immaculately when the system is excited by an array of point sources beneath the inverted pi shaped grooves. In further, we investigate the influence of center-groove and side-corners of the inverted pi shaped grooves on suppressing the reflection of light, respectively. Based on our work, it shows promising potential in applications of enhancing the extraction efficiency as well as controlling the beaming pattern of light emitting diodes.
The theoretical work of V.B. Braginsky predicted that radiation pressure can couple the mechanical, mirror-eigenmodes of a Fabry-Perot resonator to its optical modes, leading to a parametric oscillation instability. This regime is characterized by re generative mechanical oscillation of the mechanical mirror eigenmodes. We have recently observed the excitation of mechanical modes in an ultra-high-Q optical microcavity. Here, we present a detailed experimental analysis of this effect and demonstrate that radiation pressure is the excitation mechanism of the observed mechanical oscillations.
Internet of things (IoT) is one of main paradigms for 5G wireless systems. Due to high connection density, interference from other sources is a key problem in IoT networks. Especially, it is more difficult to find a solution to manage interference in uncoordinated networks than coordinated system. In this work, we consider 3D topology of uncoordinated IoT network and propose interference mitigation scheme with respect to 3D antenna radiation pattern. In 2D topology network, the radiation pattern of dipole antenna can be assumed as onmi-directional. We show the variance of antenna gain on dipole antenna in 3D topology, consider the simultaneous use of three orthogonal dipole antennas, and compare the system performance depending on different antenna configurations. Our simulation results show that proper altitude of IoT devices can extensively improve the system performance.
In practice, the finite number of samples of the spherical radiation pattern or antenna gain are taken on the sphere for both the reconstruction of the antenna radiation pattern and the computation of mobile handset performance measures such as direc tivity and mean effective gain (MEG). The acquisition of samples is time consuming as the measurements are required to be collected over the range of frequencies and in multiple spatial directions. It is therefore desired to have a sampling strategy that takes fewer number of samples for the accurate reconstruction of radiation pattern and incoming signal power distribution. In this work, we propose to use equiangular sampling, Gauss-Legendre sampling and optimal dimensionality sampling schemes on the sphere for the acquisition of measurements of spherical radiation pattern of the antenna for its reconstruction, analysis and evaluation of performance parameters of the antenna. By appropriately choosing the spherical harmonic degree band-limits of the gain and the power distribution model of the incoming signal, we demonstrate that the proposed sampling strategies require significantly less number of samples for the accurate evaluation of MEG than the existing methods that rely on the approximate evaluation of the surface integral on the sphere.
