We propose a minimal model for the emergence of a directed flow in autonomous Hamiltonian systems. It is shown that internal breaking of the spatio-temporal symmetries, via localised initial conditions, that are unbiased with respect to the transporting degree of freedom, and transient chaos conspire to form the physical mechanism for the occurrence of a current. Most importantly, after passage through the transient chaos, trajectories perform solely regular transporting motion so that the resulting current is of continual ballistic nature. This has to be distinguished from the features of transport reported previously for driven Hamiltonian systems with mixed phase space where transport is determined by intermittent behaviour exhibiting power-law decay statistics of the duration of regular ballistic periods.

We analyze the operation of a molecular machine driven by the non-adiabatic variation of external parameters. We derive a formula for the integrated flow from one configuration to another, obtain a no-pumping theorem for cyclic processes with thermal ly activated transitions, and show that in the adiabatic limit the pumped current is given by a geometric expression.
In this short review we propose a critical assessment of the role of chaos for the thermalization of Hamiltonian systems with high dimensionality. We discuss this problem for both classical and quantum systems. A comparison is made between the two si tuations: some examples from recent and past literature are presented which support the point of view that chaos is not necessary for thermalization. Finally, we suggest that a close analogy holds between the role played by Kinchins theorem for high-dimensional classical systems and the role played by Von Neumanns theorem for many-body quantum systems.
Recent experiments (G. Ariel, et al., Nature Comm. 6, 8396 (2015)) revealed an intriguing behavior of swarming bacteria: they fundamentally change their collective motion from simple diffusion into a superdiffusive L{e}vy walk dynamics. We introduce a nonlinear non-Markovian persistent random walk model that explains the emergence of superdiffusive L{e}vy walks. We show that the alignment interaction between individuals can lead to the superdiffusive growth of the mean squared displacement and the power law distribution of run length with infinite variance. The main result is that the superdiffusive behavior emerges as a nonlinear collective phenomenon, rather than due to the standard assumption of the power law distribution of run distances from the inception. At the same time, we find that the repulsion/collision effects lead to the density dependent exponential tempering of power law distributions. This qualitatively explains experimentally observed transition from superdiffusion to the diffusion of mussels as their density increases (M. de Jager et al., Proc. R. Soc. B 281, 20132605 (2014)).

Hamiltonian particle systems may exhibit non-linear hydrodynamic phenomena as the time evolution of the density fields of energy, momentum, and mass. In this Letter, an exact equation describing the time evolution is derived assuming the local Gibbs distribution at initial time. The key concept in the derivation is an identity similar to the fluctuation theorems. The Navier-Stokes equation is obtained as a result of simple perturbation expansions in a small parameter that represents the scale separation.

These lectures provide an introduction to the directed percolation and directed animals problems, from a physicists point of view. The probabilistic cellular automaton formulation of directed percolation is introduced. The planar duality of the diode -resistor-insulator percolation problem in two dimensions, and relation of the directed percolation to undirected first passage percolation problem are described. Equivalence of the $d$-dimensional directed animals problem to $(d-1)$-dimensional Yang-Lee edge-singularity problem is established. Self-organized critical formulation of the percolation problem, which does not involve any fine-tuning of coupling constants to get critical behavior is briefly discussed.
