We report a novel synthesis for near monodisperse, sub-10-nm Bi2Te3 nanoparticles. At first, a new reduction route to bismuth nanoparticles is described which are applied as starting materials in the formation of rhombohedral Bi2Te3 nanoparticles. After ligand removal by a novel hydrazine hydrate etching procedure, the nanoparticle powder is spark plasma sintered to a pellet with preserved crystal grain sizes. Unlike previous works on the properties of Bi2Te3 nanoparticles, the full thermoelectric characterization of such sintered pellets shows a highly reduced thermal conductivity and the same electric conductivity as bulk n-type Bi2Te3.

Polymer assisted spherical FeNi nanoparticles were prepared via wet chemical method using hydrazine as a reducing agent and polymers (PVP and PEG) as reducing and stabilizing agent. Structural studies performed using XRD and TEM shows uniform dispers ion of fine FeNi nanocrystallites in nanocomposite particles. The size and thermal stability of FeNi nanoparticles prepared under same reaction condition was found to be dependent on the type and the molecular weight of the polymer used. However, the magnetic properties of nanocomposite particles were not influenced by the polymers. The study highlights subtle differences in using polymers during the synthesis of alloyed nanocomposite particles.
We studied the influence of sample preparation and defects in the superconducting properties samples using atomic ratios of Mg:B=1:1 and Mg:B=1:2. Samples were characterized by SEM, and XRD, and the magnetization properties were examined in a SQUID m agnetometer. The presence of Mg vacancies was determined by Rietveld analysis. Most of the samples exhibited sharp superconducting transitions with Tcs between 37- 39 K. We found a strong correlation between the crystal strain and the Tc. This strain was related to the presence of Mg vacancies. In addition, results showed that some samples degraded with time when exposed to ambient conditions. In these samples the Tc did not change with time, but the superconducting transition became broader and the Meissner fraction decreased. This effect was only present in samples with poor connectivity between grains and smaller grain sizes. The degradation was related to a surface decomposition as observed by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy. No correlation was found between this effect and the presence of Mg vacancies.
Arising from the interplay between charge, spin and orbital of electrons, spin-orbit torque (SOT) has attracted immense interest in the past decade. Despite vast progress, the existing quantification methods of SOT still have their respective restric tions on the magnetic anisotropy, the entanglement between SOT effective fields, and the artifacts from the thermal gradient and the planar Hall effect, etc. Thus, accurately characterizing SOT across diverse samples remains as a critical need. In this work, with the aim of removing the afore-mentioned restrictions, thus enabling the universal SOT quantification, we report the characterization of the sign and amplitude of SOT by angular measurements. We first validate the applicability of our angular characterization in a perpendicularly magnetized Pt/Co-Ni heterostructure by showing excellent agreements to the results of conventional quantification methods. Remarkably, the thermoelectric effects, i.e., the anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) arising from the temperature gradient can be self-consistently disentangled and quantified from the field dependence of the angular characterization. The superiority of this angular characterization has been further demonstrated in a Cu/CoTb/Cu sample with large ANE but negligible SOT, and in a Pt/Co-Ni sample with weak perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA), for which the conventional quantification methods are not applicable and even yield fatal error. By providing a comprehensive and versatile way to characterize SOT and thermoelectric effects in diverse heterostructures, our results pave the important foundation for the spin-orbitronic study as well as the interdisciplinary research of thermal spintronic.
The six nanosized PrF3 samples were synthesized using two different chemical reactions and different time of hydrothermal reaction. The X-ray and HRTEM experiments showed high crystallinity of synthesized samples. For all samples the particles size d istribution was obtained. It was shown, that precursors of chemical reaction have influence on the shape of synthesized nanoparticles. The size of nanoparticles depended on the time of hydrothermal reaction as much as roughly 10 nm per hour.
Atomistic simulations are performed to study the statistical mechanical property of gold nanoparticles. It is demonstrated that the yielding behavior of gold nanoparticles is governed by dislocation nucleation around surface steps. Since the nucleati on of dislocations is an activated process with the aid of thermal fluctuation, the yield stress at a specific temperature should exhibit a statistical distribution rather than a definite constant value. Molecular dynamics simulations reveal that the yield stress follows a Gaussian distribution at a specific temperature. As the temperature increases, the mean value of yield stress decreases while the width of distribution becomes larger. Based on numerical analysis, the dependence of the mean yield stress on temperature can be well described by a parabolic function. Present study illuminates the statistical features of the yielding behavior of nanostructured elements.
