Recently, a new class of binary codes for overloaded CDMA systems are proposed that not only has the ability of errorless communication but also suitable for detecting active users. These codes are called COWDA [1]. In [1], a Maximum Likelihood (ML) decoder is proposed for this class of codes. Although the proposed scheme of coding/decoding show impressive performance, the decoder can be improved. In this paper by assuming more practical conditions for the traffic in the system, we suggest an algorithm that increases the performance of the decoder several orders of magnitude (the Bit-Error-Rate (BER) is divided by a factor of 400 in some Eb/N0s The algorithm supposes the Poison distribution for the time of activation/deactivation of the users.

In this paper we introduce a new class of codes for over-loaded synchronous wireless CDMA systems which increases the number of users for a fixed number of chips without introducing any errors. In addition these codes support active user detection. W e derive an upper bound on the number of users with a fixed spreading factor. Also we propose an ML decoder for a subclass of these codes that is computationally implementable. Although for our simulations we consider a scenario that is worse than what occurs in practice, simulation results indicate that this coding/decoding scheme is robust against additive noise. As an example, for 64 chips and 88 users we propose a coding/decoding scheme that can obtain an arbitrary small probability of error which is computationally feasible and can detect active users. Furthermore, we prove that for this to be possible the number of users cannot be beyond 230.
In CDMA systems, the received user powers vary due to moving distance of users. Thus, the CDMA receivers consist of two stages. The first stage is the power estimator and the second one is a Multi-User Detector (MUD). Conventional methods for estimat ing the user powers are suitable for underor fully-loaded cases (when the number of users is less than or equal to the spreading gain). These methods fail to work for overloaded CDMA systems because of high interference among the users. Since the bandwidth is becoming more and more valuable, it is worth considering overloaded CDMA systems. In this paper, an optimum user power estimation for over-loaded CDMA systems with Gaussian inputs is proposed. We also introduce a suboptimum method with lower complexity whose performance is very close to the optimum one. We shall show that the proposed methods work for highly over-loaded systems (up to m(m + 1) =2 users for a system with only m chips). The performance of the proposed methods is demonstrated by simulations. In addition, a class of signature sets is proposed that seems to be optimum from a power estimation point of view. Additionally, an iterative estimation for binary input CDMA systems is proposed which works more accurately than the optimal Gaussian input method.

This paper proposes a polar code construction scheme that reduces constituent-code supplemented decoding latency. Constituent codes are the sub-codewords with specific patterns. They are used to accelerate the successive cancellation decoding process of polar code without any performance degradation. We modify the traditional construction approach to yield increased number of desirable constituent codes that speeds the decoding process. For (n,k) polar code, instead of directly setting the k best and (n-k) worst bits to the information bits and frozen bits, respectively, we swap the locations of some information and frozen bits carefully according to the qualities of their equivalent channels. We conducted the simulation of 1024 and 2048 bits length polar codes with multiple rates and analyzed the decoding latency for various length codes. The numerical results show that the proposed construction scheme generally is able to achieve at least around 20% latency deduction with an negligible loss in gain with carefully selected optimization threshold.
Non-binary low-density parity-check codes are robust to various channel impairments. However, based on the existing decoding algorithms, the decoder implementations are expensive because of their excessive computational complexity and memory usage. B ased on the combinatorial optimization, we present an approximation method for the check node processing. The simulation results demonstrate that our scheme has small performance loss over the additive white Gaussian noise channel and independent Rayleigh fading channel. Furthermore, the proposed reduced-complexity realization provides significant savings on hardware, so it yields a good performance-complexity tradeoff and can be efficiently implemented.

This paper presents a theoretical study of a new type of LDPC codes motivated by practical storage applications. LDPCL codes (suffix L represents locality) are LDPC codes that can be decoded either as usual over the full code block, or locally when a smaller sub-block is accessed (to reduce latency). LDPCL codes are designed to maximize the error-correction performance vs. rate in the usual (global) mode, while at the same time providing a certain performance in the local mode. We develop a theoretical framework for the design of LDPCL codes. Our results include a design tool to construct an LDPC code with two data-protection levels: local and global. We derive theoretical results supporting this tool and we show how to achieve capacity with it. A trade-off between the gap to capacity and the number of full-block accesses is studied, and a finite-length analysis of ML decoding is performed to exemplify a trade-off between the locality capability and the full-block error-correcting capability.
