Doping of the band insulator FeS$_2$ with Co on the Fe site introduces a small density of itinerant carriers and magnetic moments. The lattice constant, AC and DC magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, and specific heat have been measured over the $0le xle 0.085$ range of Co concentration. The variation of the AC susceptibility with hydrostatic pressure has also been measured in a small number of our samples. All of these quantities show systematic variation with $x$ including a paramagnetic to disordered ferromagnetic transition at $x=0.007pm 0.002$. A detailed analysis of the changes with temperature and magnetic field reveal small power law dependencies at low temperatures for samples near the critical concentration for magnetism, and just above the Curie temperature at higher $x$. In addition, the magnetic susceptibility and specific heat are non-analytic around H=0 displaying an extraordinarily sharp field dependence in this same temperature range. We interpret this behavior as due to the formation of Griffiths phases that result from the quenched disorder inherent in a doped semiconductor.

The Hall effect and resistivity of the carrier doped magnetic semiconductor Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$S$_2$ were measured for $0le x le 0.16$, temperatures between 0.05 and 300 K, and fields of up to 9 T. Our Hall data indicate electron charge carriers with a density of only 10 to 30% of the Co density of our crystals. Despite the previous identification of magnetic Griffiths phase formation in the magnetic and thermodynamic properties of this system for the same range of $x$, we measure a temperature independent resistivity below 0.5 K indicating Fermi liquid-like transport. We also observe no indication of quantum corrections to the conductivity despite the small values of the product of the Fermi wave vector and the mean-free-path, $1.5 le k_Fell le 15$, over the range of $x$ investigated. This implies a large inelastic scattering rate such that the necessary condition for the observation of quantum contributions to the carrier transport, quantum coherence over times much longer than the elastic scattering time, is not met in our samples. Above 0.5 K we observe a temperature and magnetic field dependent resistivity that closely resembles a Kondo anomaly for $x$ less than that required to form a long range magnetic state, $x_c$. For $x>x_c$, the resistivity and magnetoresistance resemble that of a spin glass with a reduction of the resistivity by as much as 35% in 5 T fields. We also observe an enhancement of the residual resistivity ratio by almost a factor of 2 for samples with $xsim x_c$ indicating temperature dependent scattering mechanisms beyond simple carrier-phonon scattering. We speculate that this enhancement is due to charge carrier scattering from magnetic fluctuations which contribute to the resistivity over a wide temperature range.
We report on the emergence of an Electronic Griffiths Phase (EGP) in the doped semiconductor FeSb$_{2}$, predicted for disordered insulators with random localized moments in the vicinity of a metal-insulator transition (MIT). Magnetic, transport, and thermodynamic measurements of Fe(Sb$_{1-x}$Te$_{x}$)$_{2}$ single crystals show signatures of disorder-induced non-Fermi liquid behavior and a Wilson ratio expected for strong electronic correlations. The EGP states are found on the metallic boundary, between the insulating state ($x = 0$) and a long-range albeit weak magnetic order ($x geq 0.075$).

We report on a positive colossal magnetoresistance (MR) induced by metallization of FeSb$_{2}$, a nearly magnetic or Kondo semiconductor with 3d ions. We discuss contribution of orbital MR and quantum interference to enhanced magnetic field response of electrical resistivity.

The lacunar spinel GeV4S8 undergoes orbital and ferroelectric ordering at the Jahn-Teller transition around 30 K and exhibits antiferromagnetic order below about 14 K. In addition to this orbitally driven ferroelectricity, lacunar spinels are an inte resting material class, as the vanadium ions form V4 clusters representing stable molecular entities with a common electron distribution and a well-defined level scheme of molecular states resulting in a unique spin state per V4 molecule. Here we report detailed x-ray, magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity, heat capacity, thermal expansion, and dielectric results to characterize the structural, electric, dielectric, magnetic, and thermodynamic properties of this interesting material, which also exhibits strong electronic correlations. From the magnetic susceptibility, we determine a negative Curie-Weiss temperature, indicative for antiferromagnetic exchange and a paramagnetic moment close to a spin S = 1 of the V4 molecular clusters. The low-temperature heat capacity provides experimental evidence for gapped magnon excitations. From the entropy release, we conclude about strong correlations between magnetic order and lattice distortions. In addition, the observed anomalies at the phase transitions also indicate strong coupling between structural and electronic degrees of freedom. Utilizing dielectric spectroscopy, we find the onset of significant dispersion effects at the polar Jahn-Teller transition. The dispersion becomes fully suppressed again with the onset of spin order. In addition, the temperature dependencies of dielectric constant and specific heat possibly indicate a sequential appearance of orbital and polar order.
We present an extensive study of the structural, magnetic and thermodynamic properties of high-quality monocrystals of the two heterometallic oxyborates from the ludwigite family: Cu$_2$GaBO$_5$ and Cu$_2$AlBO$_5$ in the temperature range above 2 K. The distinctive feature of the investigated structures is the selective distribution of Cu and Ga/Al cations. The unit cell of Cu$_2$GaBO$_5$ and Cu$_2$AlBO$_5$ contains four nonequivalent crystallographic sites of metal ions. Two sites in the structure from four nonequivalent crystallographic sites of metal ions of Cu$_2$GaBO$_5$ are fully occupied by Cu atoms which form the quasi one-dimensional chains along the a-axis. For Cu$_2$AlBO$_5$ all sites are partially occupied by Al and Cu atoms. The joint analysis of low-temperature data on magnetic susceptibility and magnetic contribution to the specific heat showed that Cu$_2$AlBO$_5$ and Cu$_2$GaBO$_5$ exhibit an antiferromagnetic transition at $T_{rm N} approx 3$ and 4 K, respectively. The magnetic contributions to the specific heat for both compounds were obtained after subtracting the phonon contribution. It is shown that the external magnetic field above 2.5 T leads to a broadening of the magnetic phase transition indicating suppression of the long-range antiferromagnetic order.
