To reach the flyer plate velocities in excess of 1000km/sec required for impact ignition, it is proposed to combine the ablation acceleration of a dense hydrogen jet by its isentropic compression in a convergent Prandtl-Meyer flow, magnetically insulated by the Nernst effect against the wall confining the flow to reduce friction losses. A flyer plate placed at the front of the flow can there be accelerated to much higher velocities.

The propulsion of a liquid indium-tin micro-droplet by nanosecond-pulse laser impact is experimentally investigated. We capture the physics of the droplet propulsion in a scaling law that accurately describes the plasma-imparted momentum transfer, en abling the optimization of the laser-droplet coupling. The subsequent deformation of the droplet is described by an analytical model that accounts for the droplets propulsion velocity and the liquid properties. Comparing our findings to those from vaporization-accelerated mm-sized water droplets, we demonstrate that the hydrodynamic response of laser-impacted droplets is scalable and independent of the propulsion mechanism.
For the quadratic helicity $chi^{(2)}$ we present a generalization of the Arnold inequality which relates the magnetic energy to the quadratic helicity, which poses a lower bound. We then introduce the quadratic helicity density using the classical m agnetic helicity density and its derivatives along magnetic field lines. For practical purposes we also compute the flow of the quadratic helicity and show that for an $alpha^2$-dynamo setting it coincides with the flow of the square of the classical helicity. We then show how the quadratic helicity can be extended to obtain an invariant even under compressible deformations. Finally, we conclude with the numerical computation of $chi^{(2)}$ which show cases the practical usage of this higher order topological invariant.
Electrohydrodynamic (EHD) thrust is produced when ionized fluid is accelerated in an electric field due to the momentum transfer between the charged species and neutral molecules. We extend the previously reported analytical model that couples space charge, electric field, and momentum transfer to derive thrust force in 1D planar coordinates. The electric current density in the model can be expressed in the form of Mott-Gurney law. After the correction for the drag force, the EHD thrust model yields good agreement with the experimental data from several independent studies. The EHD thrust expression derived from the first principles can be used in the design of propulsion systems and can be readily implemented in the numerical simulations.
A novel capsule target design to improve the hot-spot pressure in the high-adiabat implosion for inertial confinement fusion is proposed, where a layer of comparatively high-density material is used as a pusher between the fuel and the ablator. This design is based on our theoretical finding of the stagnation scaling laws, which indicates that the hot spot pressure can be improved by increasing the kinetic energy density $rho_d V_{imp}^2/2$ ($rho_d$ is the shell density when the maximum shell velocity is reached, $V_{imp}$ is the implosion velocity.) of the shell. The proposed design uses the high density pusher to enhance the shell density $rho_d$ so that the hot spot pressure is improved. Radio-hydrodynamic simulations show that the hot spot pressure of the design reaches the requirement for ignition even driven by a very high-adiabat short-duration two-shock pulse. The design is hopeful to simultaneously overcome the two major obstacles to achieving ignition--ablative instability and laser-plasma instability.

In the electron-driven fast-ignition approach to inertial confinement fusion, petawatt laser pulses are required to generate MeV electrons that deposit several tens of kilojoules in the compressed core of an imploded DT shell. We review recent progre ss in the understanding of intense laser plasma interactions (LPI) relevant to fast ignition. Increases in computational and modeling capabilities, as well as algorithmic developments have led to enhancement in our ability to perform multi-dimensional particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations of LPI at relevant scales. We discuss the physics of the interaction in terms of laser absorption fraction, the laser-generated electron spectra, divergence, and their temporal evolution. Scaling with irradiation conditions such as laser intensity are considered, as well as the dependence on plasma parameters. Different numerical modeling approaches and configurations are addressed, providing an overview of the modeling capabilities and limitations. In addition, we discuss the comparison of simulation results with experimental observables. In particular, we address the question of surrogacy of todays experiments for the full-scale fast ignition problem.
