Inter-layer excitonic coherence in a quantum Hall bilayer with negligible tunneling is monitored by measurements of low-lying spin excitations. At $ u_T =1$ new quasiparticle excitations are observed above a transition temperature revealing a competing metallic phase. For magnetic fields above an onset Zeeman energy this metallic phase has full spin polarization. A phase diagram in the parameter space of temperature and Zeeman energy reveals that the transition temperature increases at higher fields. This unexpected result suggests intriguing impacts of spin polarization in the highly correlated phases.

Interlayer tunneling measurements in the strongly correlated bilayer quantized Hall phase at $ u_T=1$ are reported. The maximum, or critical current for tunneling at $ u_T=1$, is shown to be a well-defined global property of the coherent phase, insen sitive to extrinsic circuit effects and the precise configuration used to measure it, but also exhibiting a surprising scaling behavior with temperature. Comparisons between the experimentally observed tunneling characteristics and a recent theory are favorable at high temperatures, but not at low temperatures where the tunneling closely resembles the dc Josephson effect. The zero-bias tunneling resistance becomes extremely small at low temperatures, vastly less than that observed at zero magnetic field, but nonetheless remains finite. The temperature dependence of this tunneling resistance is similar to that of the ordinary in-plane resistivity of the quantum Hall phase.
We investigate integer and half-integer filling states (uniform and unidimensional stripe states respectively) for graphene using the Hartree-Fock approximation. For fixed filling factor, the ratio between the scales of the Coulomb interaction and La ndau level spacing $g=(e^2/epsilon ell)/(hbar v_F/ell)$, with $ell$ the magnetic length, is a field-independent constant. However, when $B$ decreases, the number of filled negative Landau levels increases, which surprisingly turns out to decrease the amount of Landau level mixing. The resulting states at fixed filling factor $ u$ (for $ u$ not too big) have very little Landau level mixing even at arbitrarily weak magnetic fields. Thus in the density-field phase diagram, many different phases may persist down to the origin, in contrast to the more standard two dimensional electron gas, in which the origin is surrounded by Wigner crystal states. We demonstrate that the stripe amplitudes scale roughly as $B$, so that the density waves ``evaporate continuously as $Bto 0$. Tight-binding calculations give the same scaling for stripe amplitude and demonstrate that the effect is not an artifact of the cutoff procedure used in the continuum calculations.

The Kane-Mele (KM) model is proposed to describe the quantum spin Hall effect of electrons on the two-dimensional honeycomb lattice. Here, we will show that, in a certain parameter region, the London equation is obtained from the effective field theo ry of the layered KM model with an electronic correlation.

Dynamical quantum phase transitions are closely related to equilibrium quantum phase transitions for ground states. Here, we report an experimental observation of a dynamical quantum phase transition in a spinor condensate with correspondence in an e xcited state phase diagram, instead of the ground state one. We observe that the quench dynamics exhibits a non-analytical change with respect to a parameter in the final Hamiltonian in the absence of a corresponding phase transition for the ground state there. We make a connection between this singular point and a phase transition point for the highest energy level in a subspace with zero spin magnetization of a Hamiltonian. We further show the existence of dynamical phase transitions for finite magnetization corresponding to the phase transition of the highest energy level in the subspace with the same magnetization. Our results open a door for using dynamical phase transitions as a tool to probe physics at higher energy eigenlevels of many-body Hamiltonians.
The phase stability and equilibria of carbon dioxide is investigated from 125 -- 325K and 1 -- 10,000 atm using extensive molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and the Two-Phase Thermodynamics (2PT) method. We devise a direct approach for calculating p hase diagrams in general, by considering the separate chemical potentials of the isolated phase at specific points on the P-T diagram. The unique ability of 2PT to accurately and efficiently approximate the entropy and Gibbs energy of liquids thus allows for assignment of phase boundaries from relatively short ($mathrm{sim}$ 100ps) MD simulations. We validate our approach by calculating the critical properties of the flexible Elementary Physical Model 2 (FEPM2), showing good agreement with previous results. We show, however, that the incorrect description of the short-range Pauli force and the lack of molecular charge polarization leads to deviations from experiments at high pressures. We thus develop a many-body, fluctuating charge model for CO${}_{2}$, termed CO${}_{2}$-Fq, from high level quantum mechanics (QM) calculations, that accurately captures the condensed phase vibrational properties of the solid (including the Fermi resonance at 1378 cm${}^{-1}$) as well as the diffusional properties of the liquid, leading to overall excellent agreement with experiments over the entire phase diagram. This work provides an efficient computational approach for determining phase diagrams of arbitrary systems and underscore the critical role of QM charge reorganization physics in molecular phase stability.
