We investigate integer and half-integer filling states (uniform and unidimensional stripe states respectively) for graphene using the Hartree-Fock approximation. For fixed filling factor, the ratio between the scales of the Coulomb interaction and Landau level spacing $g=(e^2/epsilon ell)/(hbar v_F/ell)$, with $ell$ the magnetic length, is a field-independent constant. However, when $B$ decreases, the number of filled negative Landau levels increases, which surprisingly turns out to decrease the amount of Landau level mixing. The resulting states at fixed filling factor $ u$ (for $ u$ not too big) have very little Landau level mixing even at arbitrarily weak magnetic fields. Thus in the density-field phase diagram, many different phases may persist down to the origin, in contrast to the more standard two dimensional electron gas, in which the origin is surrounded by Wigner crystal states. We demonstrate that the stripe amplitudes scale roughly as $B$, so that the density waves ``evaporate continuously as $Bto 0$. Tight-binding calculations give the same scaling for stripe amplitude and demonstrate that the effect is not an artifact of the cutoff procedure used in the continuum calculations.

We numerically study the interplay of band structure, topological invariant and disorder effect in two-dimensional electron system of graphene in a magnetic field. Two emph{distinct} quantum Hall effect (QHE) regimes exist in the energy band with the unconventional half-integer QHE appearing near the band center, consistent with the experimental observation. The latter is more robust against disorder scattering than the conventional QHE states near the band edges. The phase diagram for the unconventional QHE is obtained where the destruction of the Hall plateaus at strong disorder is through the float-up of extended levels toward band center and higher plateaus always disappear first. We further predict a new insulating phase between $ u =pm 2$ QHE states at the band center, which may explain the experimentally observed resistance discontinuity near zero gate voltage.
The ground state of charge neutral graphene under perpendicular magnetic field was predicted to be a quantum Hall topological insulator with a ferromagnetic order and spin-filtered, helical edge channels. In most experiments, however, an otherwise in sulating state is observed and is accounted for by lattice-scale interactions that promote a broken-symmetry state with gapped bulk and edge excitations. We tuned the ground state of the graphene zeroth Landau level to the topological phase via a suitable screening of the Coulomb interaction with a SrTiO$_3$ high-$k$ dielectric substrate. We observed robust helical edge transport emerging at a magnetic field as low as 1 tesla and withstanding temperatures up to 110 kelvins over micron-long distances. This new and versatile graphene platform opens new avenues for spintronics and topological quantum computation.
We study the low energy edge states of bilayer graphene in a strong perpendicular magnetic field. Several possible simple boundaries geometries related to zigzag edges are considered. Tight-binding calculations reveal three types of edge state behavi ors: weakly, strongly, and non-dispersive edge states. These three behaviors may all be understood within a continuum model, and related by non-linear transformations to the spectra of quantum Hall edge--states in a conventional two-dimensional electron system. In all cases, the edge states closest to zero energy include a hole-like edge state of one valley and a particle-like state of the other on the same edge, which may or may not cross depending on the boundary condition. Edge states with the same spin generically have anticrossings that complicate the spectra, but which may be understood within degenerate perturbation theory. The results demonstrate that the number of edge states crossing the Fermi level in clean, undoped bilayer graphene depends BOTH on boundary conditions and the energies of the bulk states.
Electron spin and pseudospin degrees of freedom play a critical role in many-body phenomena through exchange interactions, the understanding and control of which enable the construction of states with complex topological orders and exotic excitations . In this work, we demonstrate fine control of the valley isospin in high-quality bilayer graphene devices and its profound impact in realizing fractional quantum Hall effect with different ground state orders. We present evidence for a new even-denominator fractional quantum Hall state in bilayer graphene, its spontaneous valley polarization in the limit of zero valley Zeeman energy, and the breaking of particle-hole symmetry. These observations support the Moore-Read anti-Pfaffian order. Our experiments establish valley isospin in bilayer graphene to be a powerful experimental knob and open the door to engineering non-Abelian states and quantum information processes in a quantum Hall platform.
Bernal-stacked multilayer graphene is a versatile platform to explore quantum transport phenomena and interaction physics due to its exceptional tunability via electrostatic gating. For instance, upon applying a perpendicular electric field, its band structure exhibits several off-center Dirac points (so-called Dirac gullies) in each valley. Here, the formation of Dirac gullies and the interaction-induced breakdown of gully coherence is explored via magnetotransport measurements in high-quality Bernal-stacked (ABA) trilayer graphene. In the absence of a magnetic field, multiple Lifshitz transitions as function of electric field and charge carrier density indicating the formation of Dirac gullies are identified. In the quantum Hall regime and high electric fields, the emergence of Dirac gullies is evident as an increase in Landau level degeneracy. When tuning both electric and magnetic fields, electron-electron interactions can be controllably enhanced until the gully degeneracy is eventually lifted. The arising correlated ground state is consistent with a previously predicted nematic phase that spontaneously breaks the rotational gully symmetry.
