The resonant interaction between two two-level atoms and m- electromagnetic modes in a cavity is considered. Entanglement dynamics between two atoms is examined. In particular we compare dynamical variations for different cavity modes as well as for different cavity photon numbers. The collapse and revival of entanglement is exhibited by varying the atom-photon interaction times.

We study the dynamics of entanglement in a 1D coupled-cavity array, each cavity containing a two-level atom, via the Jaynes-Cummings-Hubbard (JCH) Hamiltonian in the single-excitation sector. The model features a rich variety of dynamical regimes tha t can be harnessed for entanglement control. The protocol is based on setting an excited atom above the ground state and further letting it evolve following the natural dynamics of the Hamiltonian. Here we focus on the concurrence between pairs of atoms and its relation to atom-field correlations and the structure of the array. We show that the extension and distribution pattern of pairwise entanglement can be manipulated through a judicious tuning of the atom-cavity coupling strength only. Our work offers a comprehensive account over the machinery of the single-excitation JCH Hamiltonian as well as contributes to the design of hybrid light-matter quantum networks.

The ability to store multiple optical modes in a quantum memory allows for increased efficiency of quantum communication and computation. Here we compute the multimode capacity of a variety of quantum memory protocols based on light storage in ensemb les of atoms. We find that adding a controlled inhomogeneous broadening improves this capacity significantly.
Quantum theoretical treatment of coherent forward scattering of light in a polarized atomic ensemble with an arbitrary angular momentum is developed. We consider coherent forward scattering of a weak radiation field interacting with a realistic multi -level atomic transition. Based on the concept of an effective Hamiltonian and on the Heisenberg formalism, we discuss the coupled dynamics of the quantum fluctuations of the polarization Stokes components of propagating light and of the collective spin fluctuations of the scattering atoms. We show that in the process of coherent forward scattering this dynamics can be described in terms of a polariton-type spin wave created in the atomic sample. Our work presents a general example of entangling process in the system of collective quantum states of light and atomic angular momenta, previously considered only for the case of spin-1/2 atoms. We use the developed general formalism to test the applicability of spin-1/2 approximation for modelling the quantum non-demolishing measurement of atoms with a higher angular momentum.
We report on Kerr nonlinearity and dispersive optical bistability of a Fabry-Perot optical resonator due to the displacement of ultracold atoms trapped within. In the driven resonator, such collective motion is induced by optical forces acting upon u p to $10^5$ $^{87}$Rb atoms prepared in the lowest band of a one-dimensional intracavity optical lattice. The longevity of atomic motional coherence allows for strongly nonlinear optics at extremely low cavity photon numbers, as demonstrated by the observation of both branches of optical bistability at photon numbers below unity.

We investigate theoretically quantum entanglement of light with the collective spin polarization of a cold atomic ensemble in cavity-assisted Raman schemes. Previous works concentrated mostly on the bad cavity limit where the signals are much longer than the cavity field lifetime. In view of atomic relaxation and other imperfections, there may arise a need to speed-up the light-atoms interface operation. By increasing the cavity field lifetime, one can achieve better light-matter coupling and entanglement. In our work, we consider the non-adiabatic effects that become important beyond the bad cavity limit in both low-photon and continuous variables regime. We find classical control field time profiles that allow one to retrieve from the cavity an output quantized signal of a predefined time shape and duration, which is optimal for the homodyne detection, optical mixing or further manipulation. This is done for a wide range of the signal duration as compared to the cavity field lifetime. We discuss an optimal cavity-atomic ensemble matching in terms of the cavity field lifetime which allows one to apply less intense control field and to minimize a variety of non-linear effects, such as AC light shifts, four-wave mixing, etc, which may be potentially harmful to an experiment.
