We report the successful synthesis of nanotubules of thermoelectric materials gamma-NaxCoO2 using two different sol-gel routes aided by porous anodized aluminium oxide (AAO) membrane as supporting templates. The gamma-NaxCoO2 nanotubule using urea-based route can be achieved at 650 degree C at a heating rate of 1 degree C/min and held for 4h. The gamma-NaxCoO2 nanotubule using citric acid-based route can be achieved at 500 degree C using a rapid-heat-up procedure and held for 30 min. The products were investigated using various techniques including XRD, SEM and TEM. Electron diffraction pattern taken along [001] zone axis direction on the nanotubule shows that all the diffraction spots can be indexed using a hexagonal unit cell with a = b = 0.56 nm, which can be considered as a superstructure with cell doubling within the ab plane.

We have studied transport properties of Nb/Al/AlOx/Nb tunnel junctions with ultrathin aluminum oxide layers formed by (i) thermal oxidation and (ii) plasma oxidation, before and after rapid thermal post-annealing of the completed structures at temper atures up to 550 deg C. Post-annealing at temperatures above 300 deg C results in a significant decrease of the tunneling conductance of thermally-grown barriers, while plasma-grown barriers start to change only at annealing temperatures above 450 deg C. Fitting the experimental I-V curves of the junctions using the results of the microscopic theory of direct tunneling shows that the annealing of thermally-grown oxides at temperatures above 300 deg C results in a substantial increase of their average tunnel barriers height, from ~1.8 eV to ~2.45 eV, versus the practically unchanged height of ~2.0 eV for plasma-grown layers. This difference, together with high endurance of annealed barriers under electric stress (breakdown field above 10 MV/cm) may enable all-AlOx and SiO2/AlOx layered crested barriers for advanced floating-gate memory applications.
Transparent oxide semiconductors (TOSs) showing both high visible transparency and high electron mobility have attracted great attention towards the realization of advanced optoelectronic devices. La-doped BaSnO3 (LBSO) is one of the most promising T OSs because its single crystal exhibits a high electron mobility. However, in the LBSO films, it is very hard to obtain high mobility due to the threading dislocations, which are originated from the lattice mismatch between the film and the substrate. Therefore, many researchers have tried to improve the mobility by inserting a buffer layer. While the buffer layers increased the electron mobilities, this approach leaves much to be desired since it involves a two-step film fabrication process and the enhanced mobility values are still significantly lower than single crystal values. We show herein that the electron mobility of LBSO films can be improved without inserting any buffer layers if the films are grown under highly oxidative ozone (O3) atmospheres. The O3 environments relaxed the LBSO lattice and reduced the formation of Sn2+ states, which are known to suppress the electron mobility in LBSO. The resultant O3-LBSO films showed improved mobility values up to 115 cm2 V-1 s-1, which is among the highest in LBSO films on SrTiO3 substrates and comparable to LBSO films with buffer layers.
Electrochromic devices, which dynamically change color under the applied potential, are widely studied because of its wide range of applications such as energy-efficient smart windows, rear view mirrors and display devices etc. In this study we are r eporting four layer electrochromic device based on tungsten oxide as a electrochromic layer and nafion membrane as a ionic conducting layer. Nafion membranes are generally used in fuel cell applications because of its high ionic conductivity and high optical transparency which is suitable for electrochromic device to attain higher efficiencies. We have prepared an electrochromic device by sandwiching ITO coated glass and WO3 coated ITO thin film between nafion membrane. The overall structure of the device is Glass/ITO/WO3/Nafion/ITO/Glass. We deposited tungsten oxide thin films with different thickness on ITO coated glass substrate at room temperature by using reactive DC Magnetron sputtering and we studied the performance of the electrochromic device with the function of thickness. We have observed that electrochromic efficiency is increasing with increase in the tungsten oxide layer thickness. The efficiency of the device increased from 24.8 cm2/C to 184.3 cm2/C.
We describe a method for fabrication of uniform aluminum nanowires with diameters below 15 nm. Electron beam lithography is used to define narrow wires, which are then etched using a sodium bicarbonate solution, while their resistance is simultaneous ly measured in-situ. The etching process can be stopped when the desired resistance is reached, and can be restarted at a later time. The resulting nanowires show a superconducting transition as a function of temperature and magnetic field that is consistent with their diameter. The width of the transition is similar to that of the lithographically defined wires, indicating that the etching process is uniform and that the wires are undamaged. This technique allows for precise control over the normal state resistance and can be used to create a variety of aluminum nanodevices.
Oil wastewater and spilled oil caused serious environmental pollution and damage to public health in the last years. Therefore, considerable efforts are made to develop sorbent materials able to separate oil from water with high selectivity and sorpt ion capacity. However most of them are low reusable, with low volume absorption capacity and poor mechanical properties. Moreover, the synthesis is time-consuming, complex and expensive limiting its practical application in case of emergency. Here we propose an innovative approach for the fabrication of porous PDMS starting from an inverse water-in-silicone procedure able to selectively collect oil from water in few seconds. The synthesis is dramatically faster than previous approaches, permitting the fabrication of the material in few minutes independently from the dimension of the sponges. The porous material evidenced a higher volume sorption capacity with respect to other materials already proposed for oil sorption from water and excellent mechanical and reusability properties. This innovative fast and simple approach can be successful in case of emergency, as oil spill accidents, permitting in situ fabrication of porous absorbents.
