Some new results about multidimensional Topological Persistence are presented, proving that the discontinuity points of a k-dimensional size function are necessarily related to the pseudocritical or special values of the associated measuring function.

This paper proves that in Size Theory the comparison of multidimensional size functions can be reduced to the 1-dimensional case by a suitable change of variables. Indeed, we show that a foliation in half-planes can be given, such that the restrictio n of a multidimensional size function to each of these half-planes turns out to be a classical size function in two scalar variables. This leads to the definition of a new distance between multidimensional size functions, and to the proof of their stability with respect to that distance.

This paper studies the properties of a new lower bound for the natural pseudo-distance. The natural pseudo-distance is a dissimilarity measure between shapes, where a shape is viewed as a topological space endowed with a real-valued continuous functi on. Measuring dissimilarity amounts to minimizing the change in the functions due to the application of homeomorphisms between topological spaces, with respect to the $L_infty$-norm. In order to obtain the lower bound, a suitable metric between size functions, called matching distance, is introduced. It compares size functions by solving an optimal matching problem between countable point sets. The matching distance is shown to be resistant to perturbations, implying that it is always smaller than the natural pseudo-distance. We also prove that the lower bound so obtained is sharp and cannot be improved by any other distance between size functions.

In this position paper we suggest a possible metric approach to shape comparison that is based on a mathematical formalization of the concept of observer, seen as a collection of suitable operators acting on a metric space of functions. These functio ns represent the set of data that are accessible to the observer, while the operators describe the way the observer elaborates the data and enclose the invariance that he/she associates with them. We expose this model and illustrate some theoretical reasons that justify its possible use for shape comparison.
An algorithm is presented that constructs an acyclic partial matching on the cells of a given simplicial complex from a vector-valued function defined on the vertices and extended to each simplex by taking the least common upper bound of the values o n its vertices. The resulting acyclic partial matching may be used to construct a reduced filtered complex with the same multidimensional persistent homology as the original simplicial complex filtered by the sublevel sets of the function. Numerical tests show that in practical cases the rate of reduction in the number of cells achieved by the algorithm is substantial. This promises to be useful for the computation of multidimensional persistent homology of simplicial complexes filtered by sublevel sets of vector-valued functions.

The bilevel program is an optimization problem where the constraint involves solutions to a parametric optimization problem. It is well-known that the value function reformulation provides an equivalent single-level optimization problem but it result s in a nonsmooth optimization problem which never satisfies the usual constraint qualification such as the Mangasarian-Fromovitz constraint qualification (MFCQ). In this paper we show that even the first order sufficient condition for metric subregularity (which is in general weaker than MFCQ) fails at each feasible point of the bilevel program. We introduce the concept of directional calmness condition and show that under {the} directional calmness condition, the directional necessary optimality condition holds. {While the directional optimality condition is in general sharper than the non-directional one,} the directional calmness condition is in general weaker than the classical calmness condition and hence is more likely to hold. {We perform the directional sensitivity analysis of the value function and} propose the directional quasi-normality as a sufficient condition for the directional calmness. An example is given to show that the directional quasi-normality condition may hold for the bilevel program.
