The apparent position of the origin (core) of extragalactic radio jets shifts with the observing frequency, owing to synchrotron self-absorption and external absorption. One of the largest core shifts was detected by us in the quasar 0850+581 between 2 and 8 GHz. We have followed this up recently by a dedicated VLBA experiment at 5, 8, 15, 24, and 43 GHz. First results from this study enabled estimating the absolute geometry and physical conditions in the parsec-scale jet origin.

We present the first multi-frequency VLBA study of the quasar 0850+581 which appears to have a two-sided relativistic jet.Apparent velocity in the approaching jet changes from 3.4c to 7c with the separation from the core. The jet-to-counter-jet ratio of about 5 and apparent superluminal velocities suggest that the observing angle of the inner jet is $leq33^circ$. It is likely that this orientation significantly changes downstream due to an interaction of the jet with the surrounding medium, signs of this are seen in polarization. A dense inhomogeneous Faraday screen is detected in the innermost regions of this quasar. We suggest that there is a presence of ionized gas in its nucleus, which might be responsible for the free-free absorption of the synchrotron emission in the jet and counter-jet at frequencies below 8.4~GHz. The experiment makes use of slowly varying instrumental polarisation factors (polarization leakage or D-terms) in time. We report application of the D-term connection technique for the calibration of an absolute orientation of electric vector position angle (EVPA) observed by VLBA at 4.6, 5.0, 8.1, 8.4, 15.4, 22.3, and 43.3 GHz bands during the 2007--2011.
We combine VLT/ISAAC NIR spectroscopy with archival HST/WFPC2 and HST/NICMOS imaging to study the central 20x20 of M83. Our NIR indices for clusters in the circumnuclear star-burst region are inconsistent with simple instantaneous burst models. Howev er, models of a single burst dispersed over a duration of 6 Myrs fit the data well and provide the clearest evidence yet of an age gradient along the star forming arc, with the youngest clusters nearest the north-east dust lane. The long slit kinematics show no evidence to support previous claims of a second hidden mass concentration, although we do observe changes in molecular gas velocity consistent with the presence of a shock at the edge of the dust lane.
Spacetime and internal symmetries can be used to severely restrict the form of the equations for the fundamental laws of physics. The success of this approach in the context of general relativity and particle physics motivates the conjecture that sym metries may help us to one day uncover the ultimate theory that provides a unique, unified description of all observed physical phenomena. We examine some of the strengths and weaknesses of this conjecture.
Malin 1, being a class of giant low surface galaxies, continues to surprise us even today. The HST/F814W observation has shown that the central region of Malin 1 is more like a normal SB0/a galaxy, while the rest of the disk has the characteristic of a low surface brightness system. The AstroSat/UVIT observations suggest scattered recent star formation activity all over the disk, especially along the spiral arms. The central 9 ($sim 14$ kpc) region, similar to the size of the Milky Ways stellar disk, has a number of far-UV clumps - indicating recent star-formation activity. The high resolution UVIT/F154W image reveals far-UV emission within the bar region ($sim 4$ kpc) - suggesting the presence of hot, young stars in the bar. These young stars from the bar region are perhaps responsible for producing the strong emission lines such as H$alpha$, [OII] seen in the SDSS spectra. Malin 1B, a dwarf early-type galaxy, is interacting with the central region and probably responsible for inducing the recent star-formation activity in this galaxy.
The Andromeda Galaxy (M31) is the nearest grand-design spiral galaxy. Thus far most studies in the radio regime concentrated on the 10 kpc ring. The central region of M31 has significantly different properties than the outer parts: The star formation rate is low, and inclination and position angle are largely different from the outer disk. The existing model of the magnetic field in the radial range 6<=r<=14 kpc is extended to the innermost part r<=0.5 kpc to ultimately achieve a picture of the entire magnetic field in M31. We combined observations taken with the VLA at 3.6 cm and 6.2 cm with data from the Effelsberg 100-m telescope to fill the missing spacings of the synthesis data. The resulting polarization maps were averaged in sectors to analyse the azimuthal behaviour of the polarized intensity (PI), rotation measure (RM), and apparent pitch angle (phi_obs). We developed a simplified 3-D model for the magnetic field in the central region to explain the azimuthal behaviour of the three observables. Our 3-D model of a quadrupolar or dipolar dynamo field can explain the observed patterns in PI, RM, and phi_obs, while a 2-D configuration is not sufficient to explain the azimuthal behaviour. In addition and independent of our model, the RM pattern shows that the spiral magnetic field in the inner 0.5 kpc points outward, which is opposite to that in the outer disk, and has a pitch angle of about 33 degrees, which is much larger than that of 8-19 degrees in the outer disk. The physical conditions in the central region differ significantly from those in the 10 kpc ring. In addition, the orientation of this region with respect to the outer disk is completely different. The opposite magnetic field directions suggest that the central region is decoupled from the outer disk, and we propose that an independent dynamo is active in the central region.
