We examine the superfluid and collapse instabilities of a quasi two-dimensional gas of dipolar fermions aligned by an orientable external field. It is shown that the interplay between the anisotropy of the dipolar interaction, the geometry of the system, and the p-wave symmetry of the superfluid order parameter means that the effective interaction for pairing can be made very large without the system collapsing. This leads to a broad region in the phase diagram where the system forms a stable superfluid. Analyzing the superfluid transition at finite temperatures, we calculate the Berezinskii--Kosterlitz--Thouless temperature as a function of the dipole angle.

Density-functional theory is utilized to investigate the zero-temperature transition from a Fermi liquid to an inhomogeneous stripe, or Wigner crystal phase, predicted to occur in a one-component, spin-polarized, two-dimensional dipolar Fermi gas. Co rrelations are treated semi-exactly within the local-density approximation using an empirical fit to Quantum Monte Carlo data. We find that the inclusion of the nonlocal contribution to the Hartree-Fock energy is crucial for the onset of an instability to an inhomogeneous density distribution. Our density-functional theory supports a transition to both a one-dimensional stripe phase, and a triangular Wigner crystal. However, we find that there is an instability first to the stripe phase, followed by a transition to the Wigner crystal at higher coupling.
We use a simple model to describe the nonlinear dynamics of a dense two dimensional dipolar exciton gas. The model predicts an initial fast expansion due to dipole-dipole pressure, followed by a much slower diffusion. The model is in very good agreem ent with recent experimental results. We show that the dipole pressure induced expansion strongly constrains the time available for achieving and observing Bose-Einstein quantum statistical effects, indicating a need for spatial exciton traps. We also suggest that nonlinear ballistic exciton transport due to the strong internal dipole pressure is readily achievable.

We study zero sound in a weakly interacting 2D gas of single-component fermionic dipoles (polar molecules or atoms with a large magnetic moment) tilted with respect to the plane of their translational motion. It is shown that the propagation of zero sound is provided by both mean field and many-body (beyond mean field) effects, and the anisotropy of the sound velocity is the same as the one of the Fermi velocity. The damping of zero sound modes can be much slower than that of quasiparticle excitations of the same energy. One thus has wide possibilities for the observation of zero sound modes in experiments with 2D fermionic dipoles, although the zero sound peak in the structure function is very close to the particle-hole continuum.

We report on experiments exploring the physics of dipolar quantum gases using a Chromium Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). By means of a Feshbach resonance, it is possible to reduce the effects of short range interactions and reach a regime where the p hysics is governed by the long-range, anisotropic dipole-dipole interaction between the large ($6 mu_{rm B}$) magnetic moments of Chromium atoms. Several dramatic effects of the dipolar interaction are observed: the usual inversion of ellipticity of the condensate during time-of flight is inhibited, the stability of the dipolar gas depends strongly on the trap geometry, and the explosion following the collapse of an unstable dipolar condensate displays d-wave like features.
In this paper we analytically investigate the ground-state properties of a two-dimensional polarized degenerate Fermi gas in a high-finesse optical cavity, which is governed by a generalized Fermi-Dicke model with tunable parameters. By solving the p hoton-number dependent Bogoliubov-de-Gennes equation, we find rich quantum phases and phase diagrams, which depend crucially on the fermion-photon coupling strength, the fermion-fermion interaction strength, and the atomic resonant frequency (effective Zeeman field). In particular, without the fermion-fermion interaction and with a weak atomic resonant frequency, we find a mixed phase that the normal phase with two Fermi surfaces and the superradiant phase coexist, and reveal a first-order phase transition from this normal phase to the superradiant phase. With the intermediate fermion-fermion interaction and fermion-photon coupling strengths, we predict another mixed phase that the superfluid and superradiant phases coexist. Finally, we address briefly how to detect these predicted quantum phases and phase diagrams in experiments.
