Given an irreducible non-spherical non-affine (possibly non-proper) building $X$, we give sufficient conditions for a group $G < Aut(X)$ to admit an infinite-dimensional space of non-trivial quasi-morphisms. The result applies to all irreducible (non-spherical and non-affine) Kac-Moody groups over integral domains. In particular, we obtain finitely presented simple groups of infinite commutator width, thereby answering a question of Valerii G. Bardakov from the Kourovka notebook. Independently of these considerations, we also include a discussion of rank one isometries of proper CAT(0) spaces from a rigidity viewpoint. In an appendix, we show that any homogeneous quasi-morphism of a locally compact group with integer values is continuous.

We initiate an investigation of lattices in a new class of locally compact groups, so called locally pro-$p$-complete Kac-Moody groups. We discover that in rank 2 their cocompact lattices are particularly well-behaved: under mild assumptions, a cocom pact lattice in this completion contains no elements of order $p$. This statement is still an open question for the Caprace-Remy-Ronan completion. Using this, modulo results of Capdeboscq and Thomas, we classify edge-transitive cocompact lattices and describe a cocompact lattice of minimal covolume.
We use the theory of Clifford algebras and Vahlen groups to study Weyl groups of hyperbolic Kac-Moody algebras T_n^{++}, obtained by a process of double extension from a Cartan matrix of finite type T_n, whose corresponding generalized Cartan matrices are symmetric.
In this note, we announce the first results on quasi-isometric rigidity of non-nilpotent polycyclic groups. In particular, we prove that any group quasi-isometric to the three dimenionsional solvable Lie group Sol is virtually a lattice in Sol. We pr ove analogous results for groups quasi-isometric to $R ltimes R^n$ where the semidirect product is defined by a diagonalizable matrix of determinant one with no eigenvalues on the unit circle. Our approach to these problems is to first classify all self quasi-isometries of the solvable Lie group. Our classification of self quasi-isometries for $R ltimes R^n$ proves a conjecture made by Farb and Mosher in [FM4]. Our techniques for studying quasi-isometries extend to some other classes of groups and spaces. In particular, we characterize groups quasi-isometric to any lamplighter group, answering a question of de la Harpe [dlH]. Also, we prove that certain Diestel-Leader graphs are not quasi-isometric to any finitely generated group, verifying a conjecture of Diestel and Leader from [DL] and answering a question of Woess from [SW],[Wo1]. We also prove that certain non-unimodular, non-hyperbolic solvable Lie groups are not quasi-isometric to finitely generated groups. The results in this paper are contributions to Gromovs program for classifying finitely generated groups up to quasi-isometry [Gr2]. We introduce a new technique for studying quasi-isometries, which we refer to as coarse differentiation.
In this article we prove existence of the asymptotic entropy for isotropic random walks on regular Fuchsian buildings. Moreover, we give formulae for the asymptotic entropy, and prove that it is equal to the rate of escape of the random walk with res pect to the Green distance. When the building arises from a Fuchsian Kac-Moody group our results imply results for random walks induced by bi-invariant measures on these groups, however our results are proven in the general setting without the assumption of any group acting on the building. The main idea is to consider the retraction of the isotropic random walk onto an apartment of the building, to prove existence of the asymptotic entropy for this retracted walk, and to `lift this in order to deduce the existence of the entropy for the random walk on the building.
Let R be a finitely generated commutative ring with 1, let A be an indecomposable 2-spherical generalized Cartan matrix of size at least 2 and M=M(A) the largest absolute value of a non-diagonal entry of A. We prove that there exists an integer n=n(A ) such that the Kac-Moody group G_A(R) has property (T) whenever R has no proper ideals of index less than n and all positive integers less than or equal to M are invertible in R.
