We study the influence of Born impurity scattering on the zero-energy Andreev bound states near the surface of a d-wave superconductor with and without an externally applied magnetic field. Without an external magnetic field we show that the effect of Born impurity scattering is stronger at the surface than in the bulk. In the presence of an external magnetic field the splitting of the zero-energy Andreev bound states is shown to have a nonmonotonous temperature dependence. Born impurity scattering does not wash out the peak splitting, but instead the peak splitting is shown to be quite robust against impurities. We also show that a nonzero gap renormalization appears near the surface.

Very recently impurity scattering effects on quasiparticles in d-wave superconductors have attracted much attention. Especially, the thermodynamic properties in magnetic fields H are of interest. We have measured the low-temperature specific heat C(T ,H) of La_1.78Sr_0.22Cu_1-xNi_xO4. For the first time, the impurity scattering effects on C(T,H) of cuprate superconductors were clearly observed, and are compared with theory of d-wave superconductivity. It is found that impurity scattering leads to gamma(H)=gamma(0)(1+D((H/H_c2)(ln(H_c2/H)) in small magnetic fields. Most amazingly, the scaling of C(T,H) breaks down due to impurity scattering.

We investigate the mutual influence of impurities in two-dimensional d-wave superconductors involving self-consistent solutions of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. The local order parameter suppression, the local density of states (LDOS) as well a s the interference of impurity-induced structures are analyzed. We employ an impurity position averaging scheme for the DOS that does not neglect these interference effects, as the commonly used $T$-matrix approaches do.

The zero-bias conductance peak in d-wave superconductors splits in an applied magnetic field. In this work, the experimentally observed universal relation delta ~ B0^(1/2) for strip-shaped samples is derived analytically based on the long-ranged curr ent contributions from Abrikosov vortices inside the sample. The result is in full agreement with observed key properties, and features such as hysteresis effects are made accessible. Employing a magnetically induced additional order parameter is not necessary for the physical explanation of the universal relation.

We theoretically investigate a non-magnetic impurity effect on the temperature dependence of the vortex core shrinkage (Kramer-Pesch effect) in a single-band s-wave superconductor. The Born limit and the unitary limit scattering are compared within t he framework of the quasiclassical theory of superconductivity. We find that the impurity effect inside a vortex core in the unitary limit is weaker than in the Born one when a system is in the moderately clean regime, which results in a stronger core shrinkage in the unitary limit than in the Born one.
The importance of accounting for the inhomogeneity of the magnetic field distribution and roundness of domain walls near the surface of type-I superconductors in the intermediate state for forming the equilibrium flux structure was predicted by Landa u eight decades ago. Further studies confirmed this prediction and extended it to all equilibrium properties of this state. Here we report on direct depth-resolved measurements of the field distribution and shape of domains near the surface of high-purity type-I (indium) films in a perpendicular field using Low-Energy Muon Spin Rotation spectroscopy. We find that at low applied fields (in about half of the field range of the intermediate state) the field distribution and domains shape agrees with that proposed by Tinkham. However, for high fields our data suggest that reality differs from theoretical expectations. In particular, the width of the superconducting laminae can expand near the surface leading to formation of a maximum in the static magnetic field in the current-free space outside the sample. A possible interpretation of these experimental results is discussed.
