Spin and charge transport through a quantum dot coupled to external nonmagnetic leads is analyzed theoretically in terms of the non-equilibrium Green function formalism based on the equation of motion method. The dot is assumed to be subject to spin and charge bias, and the considerations are focused on the Kondo effect in spin and charge transport. It is shown that the differential spin conductance as a function of spin bias reveals a typical zero-bias Kondo anomaly which becomes split when either magnetic field or charge bias are applied. Significantly different behavior is found for mixed charge/spin conductance. The influence of electron-phonon coupling in the dot on tunneling current as well as on both spin and charge conductance is also analyzed.

We investigate charge and spin transport through an adiabatically driven, strongly interacting quantum dot weakly coupled to two metallic contacts with finite bias voltage. Within a kinetic equation approach, we identify coefficients of response to t he time-dependent external driving and relate these to the concepts of charge and spin emissivities previously discussed within the time-dependent scattering matrix approach. Expressed in terms of auxiliary vector fields, the response coefficients allow for a straightforward analysis of recently predicted interaction-induced pumping under periodic modulation of the gate and bias voltage [Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 226803 (2010)]. We perform a detailed study of this effect and the related adiabatic Coulomb blockade spectroscopy, and, in particular, extend it to spin pumping. Analytic formulas for the pumped charge and spin in the regimes of small and large driving amplitude are provided for arbitrary bias. In the absence of a magnetic field, we obtain a striking, simple relation between the pumped charge at zero bias and at bias equal to the Coulomb charging energy. At finite magnetic field, there is a possibility to have interaction-induced pure spin pumping at this finite bias value, and generally, additional features appear in the pumped charge. For large-amplitude adiabatic driving, the magnitude of both the pumped charge and spin at the various resonances saturate at values which are independent of the specific shape of the pumping cycle. Each of these values provide an independent, quantitative measurement of the junction asymmetry.

We consider resonant transport through a molecular quantum dot coupled to a local vibration mode. Applying the non-equilibrium Green function technique in the polaron representation, we develop a non-perturbative scheme to calculate the electron spec tral function of the molecule in the regime of intermediate electron-phonon coupling. With increasing tunneling coupling to the leads, correlations between polaron clouds become more important at relatively high temperature leading to a strong sharpening of the peak structure in the spectral function. The detection of such features in the current-voltage characteristics is briefly discussed.

We analyze the equilibrium frequency-dependent spin current noise and spin conductance through a quantum dot in the local moment regime. Spin current correlations behave markedly differently from charge correlations. Equilibrium spin correlations are characterized by two universal scaling functions in the absence of an external field: one of them is related to charge correlations, while the other one describes cross-spin correlations. We characterize these functions using a combination of perturbative and non-perturbative methods. We find that at low temperatures spin cross-correlations are suppressed at frequencies below the Kondo scale, $T_K$, and a dynamical spin accumulation resonance is found at the Kondo energy, $omega sim T_K$. At higher temperatures, $T>T_K$, surprising low-frequency anomalies related to overall spin conservation appear in the spin noise and spin conductance, and the Korringa rate is shown to play a distinguished role. The transient spin current response also displays universal and singular properties.
We study a quantum dot connected to the bulk by single-mode junctions at almost perfect conductance. Although the average charge $elangle N rangle$ of the dot is not discrete, its spin remains quantized: $s=1/2$ or $s=0$, depending (periodically) on the gate voltage. This drastic difference from the conventional mixed-valence regime stems from the existence of a broad-band, dense spectrum of discrete levels in the dot. In the doublet state, the Kondo effect develops at low temperatures. We find the Kondo temperature $T_K$ and the conductance at $Tlesssim T_K$.

We present measurements of resonant tunneling through discrete energy levels of a silicon double quantum dot formed in a thin silicon-on-insulator layer. In the absence of piezoelectric phonon coupling, spontaneous phonon emission with deformation-po tential coupling accounts for inelastic tunneling through the ground states of the two dots. Such transport measurements enable us to observe a Pauli spin blockade due to effective two-electron spin-triplet correlations, evident in a distinct bias-polarity dependence of resonant tunneling through the ground states. The blockade is lifted by the excited-state resonance by virtue of efficient phonon emission between the ground states. Our experiment demonstrates considerable potential for investigating silicon-based spin dynamics and spin-based quantum information processing.
