We report Cousins R-band monitoring of the high-redshift (z=4.40) radio quiet quasar Q 2203+292 from May 1999 to October 2007. The quasar shows maximum peak-to-peak light curve amplitude of ~0.3 mag during the time of our monitoring, and ~0.9 mag when combined with older literature data. The rms of a fit to the light curve with a constant is 0.08 mag and 0.2 mag, respectively. The detected changes are at ~3-sigma level. The quasar was in a stable state during the recent years and it might have undergone a brightening event in the past. The structure function analysis concluded that the object shows variability properties similar to those of the lower redshift quasars. We set a lower limit to the Q 2203+292 broad line region mass of 0.3-0.4 M_odot. Narrow-band imaging search for redshifted Ly_alpha from other emission line objects at the same redshift shows no emission line objects in the quasar vicinity.

We report optical Cousins R and I band monitoring observations of the high redshift (z = 4.67) QSO SDSS J153259.96-003944.1 that does not show detectable emission lines in its optical spectrum. We show this object varies with a maximum amplitude of ~ 0.4 mag during a year and three months of monitoring. Combined with two other epochs of photometric data available in the literature, we show the object has gradually faded by ~0.9 mag during the period June 1998 - April 2001. A linear least squares fit to all available observations gives a slope of ~0.35 mag/yr which translates to ~1.9 mag/yr in the rest frame of the quasar. Such a variability is higher than that typically seen in QSOs but consistent with that of BL Lacs, suggesting that the optical continuum is Doppler boosted. Alternatively, within photometric errors, the observed lightcurve is also consistent with the object going through a microlensing event. Photoionization model calculations show the mass of the Broad Line Region to be few tens of solar mass similar to that of low luminosity Seyfert galaxies, but about orders of magnitude less than that of luminous quasars. Further frequent photometric/spectroscopic monitoring is needed to support or refute the different alternatives discussed here on the nature of SDSS J153259.96-003944.1.
We present results of the long term monitoring of the gravitationally lensed quasar HE1104-1805. The photometric data were collected between August 1997 and January 2002 as a subproject of the OGLE survey. We determine the time delay in the light c urves of images A and B of HE1104-1805 to be equal to 157+/-21 days with the variability in the image B light curve leading variability of the image A. The result is in excellent agreement with the earlier determination by Ofek and Maoz. OGLE photometry of HE1104-1805 is available to the astronomical community from the OGLE Internet archive.

The results of optical spectroscopy of two HII regions in UGCA 292 (CVn I dwA) are presented. UGCA 292 is a nearby (D=3.1 Mpc) gas-rich dwarf irregular galaxy (M_H/L_B ~ 6.9) which was first discovered in a blind HI survey. The derived oxygen abundan ce is the third lowest of known star-forming galaxies [12 + log(O/H) = 7.30 +/- 0.05], making UGCA 292 one of the nearest metal-poor galaxies known. The derived N/O ratio is similar to that found in other low metallicity galaxies [log(N/O) = -1.47 +/- 0.10], and is indicative of a primary origin for nitrogen. The derived oxygen abundance is consistent with closed-box chemical evolution for this low mass galaxy. The observed blue colors, high gas mass fraction, and low metallicity suggest that UGCA 292 is relatively unevolved. The possibility that future blind HI surveys may yield similar low metallicity galaxies is discussed.
A sample of 16 quasars selected from the Large Bright Quasar Survey in the redshift range 0.4 < z < 0.5 has been imaged in the R band with the Planetary Camera on the WFPC2 instrument of the Hubble Space Telescope. The host galaxy magnitudes are most ly similar to or brighter than L*, and the host luminosity is positively correlated with the luminosity of the quasar nuclear component. There is no distinction in host galaxy magnitude between radio-loud and radio-quiet quasars, assuming they are all of the same galaxy type. Many of the host galaxies in the sample have small axial ratios, which may indicate that they are inclined disk systems. Alternatively, this elongated appearance may be due to bars or other distinctive morphological features which are visible while the bulk of the underlying lower surface brightness components of the host galaxy are not.
In a companion paper (Paper I: Jones et al. 1996) we report the discovery of a cosmic microwave background decrement, indicative of a distant cluster with mass ~10^{15} solar masses, towards the quasar pair PC1643+4631A&B (z=3.79,3.83, separation 198 ). To search for the cluster responsible, we have obtained R-, J- and K-band images of the field and have also carried out optical spectroscopy of selected objects in it. No such cluster is evident in these images. Assuming the cluster causing the decrement is similar to massive clusters already known, our magnitude limits imply that it must lie about or beyond z=1. This provides independent support for the X-ray-based distance argument of Paper I. The cluster must gravitationally lens objects behind it; for a cluster z around 1-2, the Einstein-ring radius for sources at z ~= 3.8 is ~ 100. Simple modelling, producing simultaneously the S-Z effect and the lensing, shows that the source positions of quasars A and B lie within ~10 of each other and may indeed be coincident. The two quasar spectra are found to be remarkably similar apart from their one-percent redshift difference. Assuming A and B are images of a single quasar, we present a possible explanation of this difference.
