Neutron scattering experiments have been performed on the ternary rare-earth diborocarbide Ce$^{11}$B$_2$C$_2$. The powder diffraction experiment confirms formation of a long-range magnetic order at $T_{rm N} = 7.3$ K, where a sinusoidally modulated structure is realized with the modulation vector ${bm q} = [0.167(3), 0.167(3), 0.114(3)]$. Inelastic excitation spectra in the paramagnetic phase comprise significantly broad quasielastic and inelastic peaks centered at $hbar omega approx 0, 8$ and 65 meV. Crystalline-electric-field (CEF) analysis satisfactorily reproduces the observed spectra, confirming their CEF origin. The broadness of the quasielastic peak indicates strong spin fluctuations due to coupling between localized $4f$ spins and conduction electrons in the paramagnetic phase. A prominent feature is suppression of the quasielastic fluctuations, and concomitant growth of a sharp inelastic peak in a low energy region below $T_{rm N}$. This suggests dissociation of the conduction and localized $4f$ electrons on ordering, and contrasts the presently observed incommensurate phase with spin-density-wave order frequently seen in heavy fermion compounds, such as Ce(Ru$_{1-x}$La$_x$)$_2$Si$_2$.

We report on single crystal growth and crystallographic parameters results of Ce$_2$PdIn$_8$, Ce$_3$PdIn$_{11}$, Ce$_2$PtIn$_8$ and Ce$_3$PtIn$_{11}$. The Pt-systems Ce$_2$PtIn$_8$ and Ce$_3$PtIn$_{11}$ are synthesized for the first time. All these c ompounds are member of the Ce$_n$T$_m$In$_{3n+2m}$ (n = 1, 2,..; m = 1, 2,.. and T = transition metal) to which the extensively studied heavy fermion superconductor CeCoIn$_5$ belongs. Single crystals have been grown by In self-flux method. Differential scanning calorimetry studies were used to derive optimal growth conditions. Evidently, the maximum growth conditions for these materials should not exceed 750 $^{circ}$C. Single crystal x-ray data show that Ce$_2$TIn$_8$ compounds crystallize in the tetragonal Ho$_2$CoGa$_8$ phase (space group P4/mmm) with lattice parameters a =4.6898(3) $AA$ and c =12.1490(8) $AA$ for the Pt-based one (Pd: a = 4.6881(4) $AA$ and c = 12.2031(8) AA). The Ce$_3$TIn$_{11}$ compounds adopt the Ce$_3$PdIn$_{11}$ structure with a = 4.6874(4) $AA$ and c = 16.8422(12) $AA$ for the Pt-based one (Pd: a = 4.6896 $AA$ and c = 16.891 AA). Specific heat experiments on Ce$_3$PtIn$_{11}$ and Ce$_3$PdIn$_{11}$ have revealed that both compounds undergo two successive magnetic transitions at T$_1$ ~ 2.2 K followed by T$_N$ ~ 2.0 K and T$_1$ ~ 1.7 K and T$_N$ ~ 1.5 K, respectively. Additionally, both compounds exhibit enhanced Sommerfeld coefficients yielding {gamma}$_{Pt}$ = 0.300 J/mol K$^2$ Ce ({gamma}$_{Pd}$ = 0.290 J/mol K$^2$ Ce), hence qualifying them as heavy fermion materials.
Recent experimental results have emphasized two aspects of Tb2Ti2O7 which have not been taken into account in previous attempts to construct theories of Tb2Ti2O7: the role of small levels of structural disorder, which appears to control the formation of a long-range ordered state of as yet unknown nature; and the importance of strong coupling between spin and lattice degrees of freedom, which results in the hybridization of crystal field excitons and transverse acoustic phonons. In this work we examine the juncture of these two phenomena and show that samples with strongly contrasting behavior vis-a-vis the structural disorder (i.e. with and without the transition to the ordered state), develop identical magnetoelastic coupling. We also show that the comparison between single crystal and powder samples is more complicated than previously thought - the correlation between lattice parameter (as a measure of superstoichiometric Tb$^{3+}$) and the existence of a specific heat peak, as observed in powder samples, does not hold for single crystals.
Valency of Ce and Pr in LRu4P12 (L = Ce and Pr) was studied by L2,3-edge x-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy. The Ce-L3 XANES spectrum suggests that Ce is mainly trivalent, but the 4f state strongly hybridizes with ligand orbita ls. The band gap of CeRu4P12 seems to be formed by strong hybridization of 4f electrons. Pr-L2 XANES spectra indicate that Pr exists in trivalent state over a wide range in temperature, 20 < T < 300 K. We find that the metal-insulator (MI) transition at TMI = 60 K in PrRu4P12 does not originate from Pr valence fluctuation.
We have investigated the phonon and the magnetic excitations in LaCoO3 by inelastic neutron scattering measurements. The acoustic phonon dispersions show some characteristic features of the folded Brillouin zone (BZ) for the rhombohedrally distorted perovskite structure containing two chemical formula units of LaCoO3 in the unit cell. We observed two transverse optical (TO) phonon branches along (delta, delta, delta), consistent with previously reported Raman active Eg modes which show remarkable softening associated with the spin-state transition [Ishikawa et al., (Phys. Rev. Lett. 93 (2004) 136401.)]. We found that the softening takes place in the TO mode over the whole BZ. In contrast, the acoustic phonons show no anomalous softening associated with the spin-state transition. The low-energy paramagnetic scattering at 8 K is weak, increasing towards a maximum at E > 15 meV, consistent with excitation of the nonmagnetic low-spin to magnetic intermediate-spin state of Co 3+ ions.

We used Raman scattering to study the lattice and magnetic excitations in the hexagonal HoMnO3 single crystals. The E2 phonon mode at 237 cm-1 is affected by the magnetic order. This mode is related to the displacement of Mn and O ions in a-b plane a nd modulates the Mn-O-Mn bond angles in a-b plane and the in-plane Mn-Mn superexchange interaction. The mode at 269 cm-1 associated to the displacement of the apical Ho3+ ions along the c direction presents an abrupt change of slope at TN showing that the role of the rare earth ions can not be neglected in the magnetic transition. We have identified magnon and crystal field excitations. The temperature dependence of the magnetic excitations has been compared to the Mn and Ho moment and indicates that the exchange interaction pattern between Mn and Ho atoms drives the uniaxial anisotropy gap above the Mn-spin-rotation transition.
