The presence of a diffuse stellar component in galaxy clusters has been established by a number of observational works in recent years. In this contribution I summarize our results (Zibetti et al. 2005) obtained by stacking SDSS images of 683 clusters, selected with the maxBCG algorithm at 0.2< z <0.3. Thanks to our large sample and the advantages of image stacking applied to SDSS images, we are able to measure the systematic properties of the intracluster light (ICL) with very high accuracy. We find that the average surface brightness of the ICL ranges between 26 and 32 mag/arcsec^2, and constantly declines from 70 kpc cluster-centric distance (i.e. distance from the BCG) to 700 kpc. The fraction of diffuse light over the total light (including galaxies), monotonically declines from ~50 to <~5% over the same range of distances, thus showing that the ICL is more easily produced close to the bottom of a clusters potential well. Clusters lacking a bright BCG hardly build up a large amount of intracluster stellar component. The link between the growth of the BCG and the ICL is also suggested by the strong degree of alignment between these two components which is observed in clusters where the BCG displays a significant elongation. With the additional fact that the colors of the ICL are consistent with those of galaxies, all this appears to be evidence for IC stars being stripped from galaxies that suffer very strong tidal interactions in the center of clusters and eventually merge into the BCG. Our measurements also show that IC stars are a minor component of a clusters baryonic budget, representing only ~10% of the total optical emission within 500 kpc. Finally, we discuss some open issues that emerge from a comparison of the present results with other observations and recent theoretical modeling.

We investigate the photometric properties of 456 bright galaxies using imaging data recorded during the commissioning phase of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Morphological classification is carried out by correlating results of several human cl assifiers. Our purpose is to examine the statistical properties of color indices, scale lengths, and concentration indices as functions of morphology for the SDSS photometric system. We find that $u-g$, $g-r$, and $r-i$ colors of SDSS galaxies match well with those expected from the synthetic calculation of spectroscopic energy distribution of template galaxies and with those transformed from $UBVR_CI_C$ color data of nearby galaxies. The agreement is somewhat poor, however, for $i-z$ color band with a discrepancy of $0.1-0.2$ mag. With the aid of the relation between surface brightness and radius obtained by Kent (1985), we estimate the averages of the effective radius of early type galaxies and the scale length of exponential disks both to be 2.6 kpc for $L^*$ galaxies. We find that the half light radius of galaxies depends slightly on the color bands, consistent with the expected distribution of star-forming regions for late type galaxies and with the known color gradient for early type galaxies. We also show that the (inverse) concentration index, defined by the ratio of the half light Petrosian radius to the 90% light Petrosian radius, correlates tightly with the morphological type; this index allows us to classify galaxies into early (E/S0) and late (spiral and irregular) types, allowing for a 15-20% contamination from the opposite class compared with eye-classified morphology.
We give an update of our ongoing survey for intracluster light (ICL), in a sample of distant Abell clusters. We find that the amount of intracluster starlight is comparable to that seen in nearby clusters, and that tidal debris appears to be common.

Studying the stellar mass, age, luminosity, star-formation rate, and impact parameter of quasar absorber host galaxies can aid in the understanding of galaxy formation and evolution as well as in testing their models. We derive the Spectral Energy Di stribution (SED) and impact parameter limits of low redshift ($z_{abs} = 0.37 - 0.55$) Mg II absorbers and of higher redshift ($z_{abs} = 1.0 - 2.5$) 2175 AA dust absorbers (2DAs). We use an imaging stacking technique to statistically boost the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) to increase detection of the absorber host galaxies. The point spread function of the background quasar is modeled with Principal Component Analysis (PCA). This method efficiently reduces the uncertainty of traditional PSF modeling. Our SED for Mg II absorbers indicates that low redshift Mg II absorber host galaxies are likely star-forming galaxies transitioning into red quiescent galaxies, with a low star formation rate of 2.2 $M_odot$ $yr^{-1}$. From the stacked images and simulations, we show that the average impact parameter of 2DAs is > 5 times smaller than that of Mg II absorbers, at < 7 kpc instead of Mg II absorbers 48 kpc, indicating that 2DAs are likely associated with disk components of high redshift galaxies. This means that 2DAs are likely good probes to study precursors to the Milky Way.
Using N-body simulations, we have modeled the production and evolution of diffuse, low surface brightness intracluster light (ICL) in three simulated galaxy clusters. Using an observational definition of ICL to be luminosity at a surface brightness m u_V>26.5 mag/sq.arcsec, we have found that the fraction of cluster luminosity contained in ICL generally increases as clusters evolve, although there are large deviations from this trend over short timescales, including sustained periods of decreasing ICL luminosity. Most ICL luminosity increases come in short, discrete events which are highly correlated with group accretion events within the cluster. In evolved clusters we find that ~10-15% of the clusters luminosity is at ICL surface brightness. The morphological structure of the ICL changes with time, evolving from a complex of filaments and small-scale, relatively high surface brightness features early in a clusters history, to a more diffuse and amorphous cluster-scale ICL envelope at later times. Finally, we also see a correlation between the evolution of ICL at different surface brightnesses, including a time delay between the evolution of faint and extremely faint surface brightness features which is traced to the differing dynamical timescales in the group and cluster environment.

We investigate the UV-optical (longward of Ly$alpha$ 1216AA) spectral variability of nearly 9000 quasars ($0<z<4$) using multi-epoch photometric data within the SDSS Stripe 82 region. The regression slope in the flux-flux space of a quasar light curv e directly measures the color of the flux difference spectrum, then the spectral shape of the flux difference spectra can be derived by taking a careful look at the redshift dependence of the regression slopes. First, we confirm that the observed quasar spectrum becomes bluer when the quasar becomes brighter. We infer the spectral index of the composite difference spectrum as $alpha_{ u}^{text{dif}}sim +1/3$ (in the form of $f_{ u}propto u^{alpha_{ u}}$), which is significantly bluer than that of the composite spectrum $alpha_{ u}^{text{com}}sim -0.5$. We also show that the continuum variability cannot be explained by the accretion disk models with varying mass accretion rate. Second, we examine the effects of broad emission line variability on the color-redshift space. The variability of the Small Blue Bump is extensively discussed. We show that the low-ionization lines of MgII and FeII are less variable compared to Balmer emission lines and high-ionization lines, and the Balmer continuum is the dominant variable source around $sim 3000$AA. These results are compared with previous studies, and the physical mechanisms of the variability of the continuum and emission lines are discussed.
