The curvature-squared model of gravity, in the affine form proposed by Weyl and Yang, is deduced from a topological action in 4D. More specifically, we start from the Pontrjagin (or Euler) invariant. Using the BRST antifield formalism with a double duality gauge fixing, we obtain a consistent quantization in spaces of double dual curvature as classical instanton type background. However, exact vacuum solutions with double duality properties exhibit a `vacuum degeneracy. By modifying the duality via a scale breaking term, we demonstrate that only Einsteins equations with an induced cosmological constant emerge for the topology of the macroscopic background. This may have repercussions on the problem of `dark energy as well as `dark matter modeled by a torsion induced quintaxion.

We give a reformulation of non-linear Einstein gravity, which contains the dual graviton together with the ordinary metric and a shift gauge field. The metric does not enter through a `kinetic Einstein-Hilbert term, but via topological couplings, and so the theory does not lead to a doubling of degrees of freedom. The field equations take the form of first-order duality relations. We analyze the gauge symmetries and comment on their meaning with regard to the E11 proposal.
The divergent part of the one-loop Vilkovisky unique effective action for quantum Einstein gravity is evaluated in the general parametrization of the quantum field, including the separated conformal factor. The output of this calculation explicitly d emonstrates the parametrization and conformal gauge independence of the unique effective action with the configuration space metric chosen following Vilkoviskys prescription.
The general form of the action growth for a large class of static black hole solutions in modified gravity which includes $F(R)$-gravity models is computed. The cases of black hole solutions with non vanishing Ricci curvature are also considered, gen eralizing the results previously found and valid only for constant curvature black holes. An argument is put forward to provide a physical interpretation of the results.
We construct slowly rotating black-hole solutions of Einsteinian cubic gravity (ECG) in four dimensions with flat and AdS asymptotes. At leading order in the rotation parameter, the only modification with respect to the static case is the appearance of a non-vanishing $g_{tphi}$ component. Similarly to the static case, the order of the equation determining such component can be reduced twice, giving rise to a second-order differential equation which can be easily solved numerically as a function of the ECG coupling. We study how various physical properties of the solutions are modified with respect to the Einstein gravity case, including its angular velocity, photon sphere, photon rings, shadow, and innermost stable circular orbits (in the case of timelike geodesics).
In this paper we investigate the cosmological dynamics of an up to cubic curvature correction to General Relativity (GR) known as Cosmological Einsteinian Cubic Gravity (CECG), whose vacuum spectrum consists of the graviton exclusively and its cosmol ogy is well-posed as an initial value problem. We are able to uncover the global asymptotic structure of the phase space of this theory. It is revealed that an inflationary matter-dominated bigbang is the global past attractor which means that inflation is the starting point of any physically meaningful cosmic history. Given that higher order curvature corrections to GR are assumed to influence the cosmological dynamics at early times -- high energies/large curvature limit -- the late-time inflation can not be a consequence of the up to cubic order curvature modifications. We confirm this assumption by showing that late-time acceleration of the expansion in the CECG model is possible only if add a cosmological constant term.
