We present analysis of Chandra and XMM-Newton observations of three early-type galaxies, NGC 57, NGC 7796 and IC 1531. All three are found in very low density environments, and appear to have no neighbours of comparable size. NGC 57 has a halo of kT~0.9 keV, solar metallicity gas, while NGC 7796 and IC 1531 both have ~0.55 keV, 0.5-0.6 Zsol haloes. IC 1531 has a relatively compact halo, and we consider it likely that gas has been removed from the system by the effects of AGN heating. For NGC 57 and NGC 7796 we estimate mass, entropy and cooling time profiles and find that NGC 57 has a fairly massive dark halo with a mass-to-light ratio of 44.7 (4.0,-8.5) Msol/Lsol (1 sigma uncertainties) at 4.75 Re. This is very similar to the mass-to-light ratio found for NGC 4555 and confirms that isolated ellipticals can possess sizable dark matter haloes. We find a significantly lower mass-to-light ratio for NGC 7796, 10.6 (+2.5,-2.3) Msol/Lsol at 5 Re, and discuss the possibility that NGC 7796 hosts a galactic wind, causing us to underestimate its mass.

New photometric and long-slit spectroscopic observations are presented for NGC 7113, PGC 1852, and PGC 67207 which are three bright galaxies residing in low-density environments. The surface-brightness distribution is analysed from the K_S-band image s taken with adaptive optics at the Gemini North Telescope and the ugriz-band images from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey while the line-of-sight stellar velocity distribution and line-strength Lick indices inside the effective radius are measured along several position angles. The age, metallicity, and alpha-element abundance of the galaxies are estimated from single stellar-population models. In spite of the available morphological classification, images show that PGC 1852 is a barred spiral which we do not further consider for mass modelling. The structural parameters of the two early-type galaxies NGC 7113 and PGC 67207 are obtained from a two-dimensional photometric decomposition and the mass-to-light ratio of all the (luminous and dark) mass that follows the light is derived from orbit-based axisymmetric dynamical modelling together with the mass density of the dark matter halo. The dynamically derived mass that follows the light is about a factor of 2 larger than the stellar mass derived using stellar-population models with Kroupa initial mass function. Both galaxies have a lower content of halo dark matter with respect to early-type galaxies in high-density environments and in agreement with the predictions of semi-analytical models of galaxy formation.

We present results from a study of the non-nuclear discrete sources in a sample of three nearby spiral galaxies (NGC 4395, NGC 4736, and NGC 4258) based on XMM-Newton archival data supplemented with Chandra data for spectral and timing analyses. A to tal of 75 X-ray sources has been detected within the D25 regions of the target galaxies. The large collecting area of XMM-Newton makes the statistics sufficient to obtain spectral fitting for 16 (about 20%) of these sources. Compiling the extensive archival exposures available, we were able to obtain the detailed spectral shapes of diverse classes of point sources. We have also studied temporal properties of these luminous sources. 11 of them are found to show short-term (less than 80 ks) variation while 8 of them show long-term variation within factors of ~ 2 to 5 during a time interval of ~ 2 to 12 years. Timing analysis provides strong evidence that most of these sources are accreting X-ray binary (XRB) systems. One source that has properties different than others was suspected to be a Supernova Remnant (SNR), and our follow-up optical observation confirmed it. Our results indicate that sources within the three nearby galaxies are showing a variety of source populations, including several Ultraluminous X-Ray Sources (ULXs), X-ray binaries (XRBs), transients together with a Super Soft Source (SSS) and a background Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) candidate.

We present XMM-Newton EPIC observations of the two nearby starburst merger galaxies NGC 3256 & NGC 3310. The broad-band (0.3-10 keV) integrated X-ray emission from both galaxies shows evidence of multi-phase thermal plasmas plus an underlying hard no n-thermal power-law continuum. NGC 3256 is well-fit with a model comprising two MEKAL components (kT=0.6/0.9 keV) plus a hard power-law (Gamma=2), while NGC 3310 has cooler MEKAL components (kT=0.3/0.6 keV) and a harder power-law tail (Gamma=1.8). Chandra observations of these galaxies both reveal the presence of numerous discrete sources embedded in the diffuse emission, which dominate the emission above ~2 keV and are likely to be the source of the power-law emission. The thermal components show a trend of increasing absorption with higher temperature, suggesting that the hottest plasmas arise from supernova-heated gas within the disks of the galaxies, while the cooler components arise from outflowing galactic winds interacting with the ambient interstellar medium (ISM). We find no strong evidence for an active galactic nucleus (AGN) in either galaxy.
We describe the construction and study of an objectively-defined sample of early-type galaxies in low-density environments. The sample galaxies are selected from a recently-completed redshift survey using uniform and readily-quantified isolation crit eria, and are drawn from a sky area of ~700 deg^2, to a depth of 7000 k/ms and an apparent magnitude limit of b_J < 16.1. Their early-type (E/S0) morphologies are confirmed by subsequent CCD imaging. Five out of the nine sample galaxies show signs of morphological peculiarity such as tidal debris or blue circumnuclear rings. We confirm that E/S0 galaxies are rare in low-density regions, accounting for only ~8% of the total galaxy population in such environments. We present spectroscopic observations of nine galaxies in the sample, which are used, in conjunction with updated stellar population models, to investigate star-formation histories. Environmental effects on early-type galaxy evolution are investigated by comparison with a sample of Fornax cluster E/S0s. Results from both samples are compared with predictions from semi-analytic galaxy formation models. The Mg-sig relation of E/S0s in low-density regions is shown to be indistinguishable from that of the Fornax sample. Luminosity-weighted stellar ages and metallicities are determined by considering various combinations of line-indices. At a given luminosity, the E/S0 galaxies in low-density regions are younger than the E/S0s in clusters (by ~2-3 Gyr), and also more metal-rich (by ~0.2 dex). We infer that an anti-correlation of age and metallicity effects is responsible for maintaining the zero-point of the Mg-sig relation. The youngest galaxies in our sample show clear morphological signs of interaction. (Abridged)
Using new Chandra X-ray observations and existing XMM-Newton X-ray and Hubble far ultraviolet observations, we aim to detect and identify the faint X-ray sources belonging to the Galactic globular cluster NGC 2808 in order to understand their role in the evolution of globular clusters. We present a Chandra X-ray observation of the Galactic globular cluster NGC 2808. We classify the X-ray sources associated with the cluster by analysing their colours and variability. Previous observations with XMM-Newton and far ultraviolet observations with the Hubble Space Telescope are re-investigated to help identify the Chandra sources associated with the cluster. We compare our results to population synthesis models and observations of other Galactic globular clusters. We detect 113 sources, of which 16 fall inside the half-mass radius of NGC 2808 and are concentrated towards the cluster core. From statistical analysis, these 16 sources are very likely to be linked to the cluster. We detect short-term (1 day) variability in X-rays for 7 sources, of which 2 fall inside the half-mass radius, and long-term (28 months) variability for 10 further sources, of which 2 fall inside the half-mass radius. Ultraviolet counterparts are found for 8 Chandra sources in the core, of which 2 have good matching probabilities and have ultraviolet properties expected for cataclysmic variables. We find one likely neutron star-quiescent low-mass X-ray binary and 7 cataclysmic variable candidates in the core of NGC 2808. The other 8 sources are cataclysmic variable candidates, but some could possibly be active binaries or millisecond pulsars. We find a possible deficit of X-ray sources compared to 47 Tuc which could be related to the metallicity content and the complexity of the evolution of NGC 2808.
