We study the stability of traveling waves of nonlinear Schrodinger equation with nonzero condition at infinity obtained via a constrained variational approach. Two important physical models are Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation and cubic-quintic equatio n. First, under a non-degeneracy condition we prove a sharp instability criterion for 3D traveling waves of (GP), which had been conjectured in the physical literature. This result is also extended for general nonlinearity and higher dimensions, including 4D (GP) and 3D cubic-quintic equations. Second, for cubic-quintic type sub-critical or critical nonlinearity, we construct slow traveling waves and prove their nonlinear instability in any dimension. For traveling waves without vortices (i.e. nonvanishing) of general nonlinearity in any dimension, we find the sharp condition for linear instability. Third, we prove that any 2D traveling wave of (GP) is transversally unstable and find the sharp interval of unstable transversal wave numbers. Near unstable traveling waves of above cases, we construct unstable and stable invariant manifolds.

The dynamics of collisionless galaxy can be described by the Vlasov-Poisson system. By the Jeans theorem, all the spherically symmetric steady galaxy models are given by a distribution of {Phi}(E,L), where E is the particle energy and L the angular m omentum. In a celebrated Doremus-Feix-Baumann Theorem, the galaxy model {Phi}(E,L) is stable if the distribution {Phi} is monotonically decreasing with respect to the particle energy E. On the other hand, the stability of {Phi}(E,L) remains largely open otherwise. Based on a recent abstract instability criterion of Guo-Lin, we constuct examples of unstable galaxy models of f(E,L) and f(E) in which f fails to be monotone in E.
We consider a steady state $v_{0}$ of the Euler equation in a fixed bounded domain in $mathbf{R}^{n}$. Suppose the linearized Euler equation has an exponential dichotomy of unstable and center-stable subspaces. By rewriting the Euler equation as an O DE on an infinite dimensional manifold of volume preserving maps in $W^{k, q}$, $(k>1+frac{n}{q})$, the unstable (and stable) manifolds of $v_{0}$ are constructed under certain spectral gap condition which is verified for both 2D and 3D examples. In particular, when the unstable subspace is finite dimensional, this implies the nonlinear instability of $v_{0}$ in the sense that arbitrarily small $W^{k, q}$ perturbations can lead to $L^{2}$ growth of the nonlinear solutions.
Consider Vlasov-Poisson system with a fixed ion background and periodic condition on the space variables, in any dimension dgeq2. First, we show that for general homogeneous equilibrium and any periodic x-box, within any small neighborhood in the Sob olev space W_{x,v}^{s,p} (p>1,s<1+(1/p)) of the steady distribution function, there exist nontrivial travelling wave solutions (BGK waves) with arbitrary traveling speed. This implies that nonlinear Landau damping is not true in W^{s,p}(s<1+(1/p)) space for any homogeneous equilibria and in any period box. The BGK waves constructed are one dimensional, that is, depending only on one space variable. Higher dimensional BGK waves are shown to not exist. Second, for homogeneous equilibria satisfying Penroses linear stability condition, we prove that there exist no nontrivial invariant structures in the (1+|v|^{2})^{b}-weighted H_{x,v}^{s} (b>((d-1)/4), s>(3/2)) neighborhood. Since arbitrarilly small BGK waves can also be constructed near any homogeneous equilibria in such weighted H_{x,v}^{s} (s<(3/2)) norm, this shows that s=(3/2) is the critical regularity for the existence of nontrivial invariant structures near stable homogeneous equilibria. These generalize our previous results in the one dimensional case.
Consider inviscid fluids in a channel {-1<y<1}. For the Couette flow v_0=(y,0), the vertical velocity of solutions to the linearized Euler equation at v_0 decays in time. At the nonlinear level, such inviscid damping has not been proved. First, we sh ow that in any (vorticity) H^{s}(s<(3/2)) neighborhood of Couette flow, there exist non-parallel steady flows with arbitrary minimal horizontal period. This implies that nonlinear inviscid damping is not true in any (vorticity) H^{s}(s<(3/2)) neighborhood of Couette flow and for any horizontal period. Indeed, the long time behavior in such neighborhoods are very rich, including nontrivial steady flows, stable and unstable manifolds of nearby unstable shears. Second, in the (vorticity) H^{s}(s>(3/2)) neighborhood of Couette, we show that there exist no non-parallel steadily travelling flows v(x-ct,y), and no unstable shears. This suggests that the long time dynamics in H^{s}(s>(3/2)) neighborhoods of Couette might be much simpler. Such contrasting dynamics in H^{s} spaces with the critical power s=(3/2) is a truly nonlinear phenomena, since the linear inviscid damping near Couette is true for any initial vorticity in L^2.

Consider 1D Vlasov-poisson system with a fixed ion background and periodic condition on the space variable. First, we show that for general homogeneous equilibria, within any small neighborhood in the Sobolev space W^{s,p} (p>1,s<1+(1/p)) of the stea dy distribution function, there exist nontrivial travelling wave solutions (BGK waves) with arbitrary minimal period and traveling speed. This implies that nonlinear Landau damping is not true in W^{s,p}(s<1+(1/p)) space for any homogeneous equilibria and any spatial period. Indeed, in W^{s,p} (s<1+(1/p)) neighborhood of any homogeneous state, the long time dynamics is very rich, including travelling BGK waves, unstable homogeneous states and their possible invariant manifolds. Second, it is shown that for homogeneous equilibria satisfying Penroses linear stability condition, there exist no nontrivial travelling BGK waves and unstable homogeneous states in some W^{s,p} (p>1,s>1+(1/p)) neighborhood. Furthermore, when p=2,we prove that there exist no nontrivial invariant structures in the H^{s} (s>(3/2)) neighborhood of stable homogeneous states. These results suggest the long time dynamics in the W^{s,p} (s>1+(1/p)) and particularly, in the H^{s} (s>(3/2)) neighborhoods of a stable homogeneous state might be relatively simple. We also demonstrate that linear damping holds for initial perturbations in very rough spaces, for linearly stable homogeneous state. This suggests that the contrasting dynamics in W^{s,p} spaces with the critical power s=1+(1/p) is a trully nonlinear phenomena which can not be traced back to the linear level.

We consider the linearized instability of 2D irrotational solitary water waves. The maxima of energy and the travel speed of solitary waves are not obtained at the highest wave, which has a 120 degree angle at the crest. Under the assumption of non-e xistence of secondary bifurcation which is confirmed numerically, we prove linear instability of solitary waves which are higher than the wave of maximal energy and lower than the wave of maximal travel speed. It is also shown that there exist unstable solitary waves approaching the highest wave. The unstable waves are of large amplitude and therefore this type of instability can not be captured by the approximate models derived under small amplitude assumptions. For the proof, we introduce a family of nonlocal dispersion operators to relate the linear instability problem with the elliptic nature of solitary waves. A continuity argument with a moving kernel formula is used to study these dispersion operators to yield the instability criterion.

We consider linear instability of solitary waves of several classes of dispersive long wave models. They include generalizations of KDV, BBM, regularized Boussinesq equations, with general dispersive operators and nonlinear terms. We obtain criteria for the existence of exponentially growing solutions to the linearized problem. The novelty is that we dealt with models with nonlocal dispersive terms, for which the spectra problem is out of reach by the Evans function technique. For the proof, we reduce the linearized problem to study a family of nonlocal operators, which are closely related to properties of solitary waves. A continuation argument with a moving kernel formula are used to find the instability criteria. Recently, these techniques have also been extended to study instability of periodic waves and to the full water wave problem.

The Degasperis-Procesi equation can be derived as a member of a one-parameter family of asymptotic shallow water approximations to the Euler equations with the same asymptotic accuracy as that of the Camassa-Holm equation. In this paper, we study the orbital stability problem of the peaked solitons to the Degasperis-Procesi equation on the line. By constructing a Liapunov function, we prove that the shapes of these peakon solitons are stable under small perturbations.

To determine the stability and instability of a given steady galaxy configuration is one of the fundamental problems in the Vlasov theory for galaxy dynamics. In this article, we study the stability of isotropic spherical symmetric galaxy models $f_{ 0}(E)$, for which the distribution function $f_{0}$ depends on the particle energy $E$ only. In the first part of the article, we derive the first sufficient criterion for linear instability of $f_{0}(E):$ $f_{0}(E)$ is linearly unstable if the second-order operator [ A_{0}equiv-Delta+4piint f_{0}^{prime}(E){I-mathcal{P}}dv ] has a negative direction, where $mathcal{P}$ is the projection onto the function space ${g(E,L)},$ $L$ being the angular momentum [see the explicit formula (ref{A0-radial})]. In the second part of the article, we prove that for the important King model, the corresponding $A_{0}$ is positive definite. Such a positivity leads to the nonlinear stability of the King model under all spherically symmetric perturbations.
