Recent studies suggest that an exemplary Kondo insulator SmB6 belongs to a new class of topological insulators (TIs), in which non-trivial spin-polarized metallic states emerge on surface upon the formation of Kondo hybridization gap in the bulk. Rem arkably, the bulk resistivity reaches more than 20 Ohm cm at 4 K, making SmB6 a candidate for a so-called bulk-insulating TI. We here investigate optical-pulse responses of SmB6 by pump-and-probe photoemission spectroscopy. Surface photovoltage effect is observed below ~90 K. This indicates that an optically-active band bending region develops beneath the novel metallic surface upon the bulk-gap evolution. The photovoltaic effect persists for >200 microsec, which is long enough to be detected by electronics devices, and could be utilized for optical gating of the novel metallic surface.
Ultrafast dynamics of graphite is investigated by time-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We observe spectral features of direct photoexcitations, non-thermal electron distributions, and recovery dynamics occurring with two time scales having disti nct pump-power dependences. Additionally, we find an anomalous increase of the spectral intensity around the Fermi level, and we attribute this to spectral broadenings due to coupled optical phonons in the transient. The fingerprints of the coupled optical phonons occur from the temporal region where the electronic temperature is still not definable. This implies that there is a mechanism of ultrafast-and-efficient phonon generations beyond a two-temperature model.
We investigate the transport properties of LixCoO2 thin films whose resistivities are nearly an order of magnitude lower than those of the bulk polycrystals. A metal-nonmetal transition occurs at ~0.8 in a biphasic domain, and the Seebeck coefficient (S) is drastically increased at ~140 K (= T*) with increasing the Li concentration to show a peak of magnitude ~120 muV/K in the S-T curve of x = 0.87. We show that T* corresponds to a crossover temperature in the conduction, most likely reflecting the correlation-induced temperature dependence in the low-energy excitations.

Soft-x-ray photoemission and absorption spectroscopies are employed to investigate the electronic structures of Sr_{1-x}Rh_{2}O_{4}. Similarly to the layered cobaltates such as Na_{1-x}CoO_{2}, a valence-band satellite feature (VBS) occurs at higher binding energy to the O 2p band. We find that the VBS resonates at the O 1s edge. Additionally, core absorption shows clear x dependence in the O 1s edge rather than in the Rh 3p edge. These results indicate that the holes in the initial state mainly have O 2p character presumably due to d-p rehybridizations affected by Sr^{2+} vacancy potentials. The resultant inhomogenous charge texture may have impact on the TE transport properties at low x.
We have performed a temperature-dependent angle-integrated laser photoemission study of iron oxypnictide superconductors LaFeAsO:F and LaFePO:F exhibiting critical transition temperatures (Tcs) of 26 K and 5 K, respectively. We find that high-Tc LaFe AsO:F exhibits a temperature-dependent pseudogap-like feature extending over ~0.1 eV about the Fermi level at 250 K, whereas such a feature is absent in low-Tc LaFePO:F. We also find ~20-meV pseudogap-like features and signatures of superconducting gaps both in LaFeAsO:F and LaFePO:F. We discuss the possible origins of the unusual pseudogap-like features through comparison with the high-Tc cuprates.
We have performed x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and valence-band photoemission studies of the diluted ferromagnetic semiconductor Zn$_{1-x}$Cr$_x$Te. XMCD signals due to ferromagnetism were observed at the Cr 2p absorption edge. Comparison with atomic multiplet calculations suggests that the magnetically active component of the Cr ion was divalent under the tetrahedral crystal field with tetragonal distortion along the crystalline a-, b-, and c-axes. In the valence-band spectra, spectral weight near the Fermi level was strongly suppressed, suggesting the importance of Jahn-Teller effect and the strong Coulomb interaction between the Cr 3d electrons.
