Pauli spin blockade (PSB) is a significant physical effect in double quantum dot (DQD) systems. In this paper, we start from the fundamental quantum model of the DQD with the electron-electron interaction being considered, and then systematically stu dy the PSB effect in DQD by using a recently developed non-perturbative method, the hierarchical equations of motion (HEOM) approach. The physical picture of the PSB is elucidated explicitly and the gate voltage manipulation is described minutely, which are both qualitatively consistent with the experimental measurements. When dotdot exchange interaction is involved, the PSB effect may be lifted by the strong antiferromagnetic exchange coupling.
We investigate the time-dependent transport properties of single and double quantum-impurity systems based on the hierarchical equations of motion (HEOM) approach. In the Kondo regime, the dynamical current in both cases is found oscillating due to t he temporal coherence of electrons tunneling through the device, which shares the same mechanism as the single-level resonance without e-e interactions but shows some different characteristics. For single quantum-impurity systems, the temperature T plays an inhibitory action to the oscillations of dynamic current through its suppression to the Kondo effects. The amplitude of the current oscillations is attenuated by the e-e interaction $U$ in the Kondo regime. The frequency of the current oscillation is found almost independent of T and U. For parallel-coupling double quantum-impurity systems, the oscillation of the current shows similar behaviors to the single one, but with two-to-three times larger amplitudes. At the limit of small inter-impurity coupling the oscillation of the current exhibits enhanced characters while it is weakened at the other limit.

The electrostatic gating effects on molecular transistors are investigated using the density functional theory (DFT) combined with the nonequilibrium Greens function (NEGF) method. When molecular energy levels are away from the Fermi energy they can be linearly shifted by the gate voltage, which is consistent with recent experimental observations [Nature 462, 1039 (2009)]. However, when they move near to the Fermi energy (turn-on process), the shifts become extremely small and almost independent of the gate voltage. The fact that the conductance may be beyond the gate control in the ON state will challenge the implementation of molecular transistors.

Basing on the theory of Feynmans influence functional and its hierarchical equations of motion, we develop a linear response theory for quantum open systems. Our theory provides an effective way to calculate dynamical observables of a quantum open sy stem at its steady-state, which can be applied to various fields of non-equilibrium condensed matter physics.

The origin of ferromagnetic insulating state of La$_{7/8}$Sr$_{1/8}$MnO$_3$ is investigated. Based on the tight-binding model, it is shown that this state can be attributed to the Peierls instability arisen from the interplay of spin and orbital orde ring. The importance of the hole-orbiton-phonon intercoupling in doped manganites is revealed. This picture explains well the recent experimental finding of the reentrance of ferromagnetic metal state at low temperature [Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 097201 (2006)].

From first-principles density functional theory calculations combined with varying temperature Raman experiments, we show that AFe$_2$As$_2$ (A=Ba, Sr), the parent compound of the FeAs based superconductors of the new structural family, undergoes a s pin-Peierls-like phase transition at low temperature. The coupling between the phonons and frustrated spins is proved to be the main cause of the structural transition from the tetragonal to orthorhombic phase. These results well explain the magnetic and structural phase transitions in AFe$_2$As$_2$(A=Ba, Sr) recently observed by neutron scattering.
