The possibility of imposing partially twisted boundary conditions in the lattice study of the resonance states is investigated by using the effective field theory (EFT) methods. In particular, it is demonstrated that - in certain cases - it is possib le to use partial twisting even in the presence of the quark annihilation diagrams.
The divergent part of the one-loop effective action in Chiral Perturbation Theory with virtual photons has been evaluated in an arbitrary covariant gauge. The differential operator, that emerges in the functional determinant, is of a non-minimal type , for which the standard heat kernel methods are not directly applicable. Both SU(2) and SU(3) cases have been worked out. A comparison with existing results in the literature is given.
A new method based on the concept of probability distribution is proposed to analyze the finite volume energy spectrum in lattice QCD. Using synthetic lattice data, we demonstrate that for the channel with quantum numbers of the Delta-resonance a cle ar resonance structure emerges in such an analysis. Consequently, measuring the volume-dependence of the energy levels in lattice QCD will allow to determine the mass and the width of the Delta with reasonable accuracy.
We review the theory of hadronic atoms in QCD + QED, based on a non-relativistic effective Lagrangian framework. We first provide an introduction to the theory, and then describe several applications: meson-meson, meson-nucleon atoms and meson-deuter on compounds. Finally, we compare the quantum field theory framework used here with the traditional approach, which is based on quantum-mechanical potential scattering.
We calculate the self-energy of the Delta (1232) resonance in a finite volume, using chiral effective field theory with explicit spin-3/2 fields. The calculations are performed up-to-and-including fourth order in the small scale expansion and yield a n explicit parameterization of the energy spectrum of the interacting pion-nucleon pair in a finite box in terms of both the quark mass and the box size L. It is shown that finite-volume corrections can be sizeable at small quark masses.
Data on Ke4 decays allow one to extract experimental information on the elastic pi pi scattering amplitude near threshold, and to confront the outcome of the analysis with predictions made in the framework of QCD. These predictions concern an isospin symmetric world, while experiments are carried out in the real world, where isospin breaking effects - generated by electromagnetic interactions and by the mass difference of the up and down quarks - are always present. We discuss the corrections required to account for these, so that a meaningful comparison with the predictions becomes possible. In particular, we note that there is a spectacular isospin breaking effect in Ke4 decays. Once it is taken into account, the previous discrepancy between NA48/2 data on Ke4 decays and the prediction of pi pi scattering lengths disappears.
