We present a magneto-infrared spectroscopy study on a newly identified three-dimensional (3D) Dirac semimetal ZrTe$_5$. We observe clear transitions between Landau levels and their further splitting under magnetic field. Both the sequence of transiti ons and their field dependence follow quantitatively the relation expected for 3D emph{massless} Dirac fermions. The measurement also reveals an exceptionally low magnetic field needed to drive the compound into its quantum limit, demonstrating that ZrTe$_5$ is an extremely clean system and ideal platform for studying 3D Dirac fermions. The splitting of the Landau levels provides a direct and bulk spectroscopic evidence that a relatively weak magnetic field can produce a sizeable Zeeman effect on the 3D Dirac fermions, which lifts the spin degeneracy of Landau levels. Our analysis indicates that the compound evolves from a Dirac semimetal into a topological line-node semimetal under current magnetic field configuration.

We report optical spectroscopic measurements on electron- and hole-doped BaFe2As2. We show that the compounds in the normal state are not simple metals. The optical conductivity spectra contain, in addition to the free carrier response at low frequen cy, a temperature-dependent gap-like suppression at rather high energy scale near 0.6 eV. This suppression evolves with the As-Fe-As bond angle induced by electron- or hole-doping. Furthermore, the feature becomes much weaker in the Fe-chalcogenide compounds. We elaborate that the feature is caused by the strong Hunds rule coupling effect between the itinerant electrons and localized electron moment arising from the multiple Fe 3d orbitals. Our experiments demonstrate the coexistence of itinerant and localized electrons in iron-based compounds, which would then lead to a more comprehensive picture about the metallic magnetism in the materials.

We report an infrared spectroscopy study on K$_{0.83}$Fe$_{1.53}$Se$_2$, a semiconducting parent compound of the new iron-selenide system. The major spectral features are found to be distinctly different from all other Fe-based superconducting system s. Our measurement revealed two peculiar spectral structures: a double peak structure between 4000-6000 cm$^{-1}$ and abundant phonon modes much more than those expected for a 122 structure. We elaborate that those features could be naturally explained from the blocked antiferromagnetism due to the presence of Fe vacancy ordering as determined by recent neutron diffraction experiments. The double peaks reflect the coexistence of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic couplings between the neighboring Fe sites.
We report on a c-axis polarized optical measurement on a Ba$_{0.67}$K$_{0.33}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ single crystal. We find that the c-axis optical response is significantly different from that of high-T$_c$ cuprates. The experiments reveal an anisotropic thr ee-dimensional optical response with the absence of the Josephson plasma edge in R($omega$) in the superconducting state. Furthermore, different from the ab-plane optical response, a large residual quasiparticle population down to $Tsimfrac{1}{5}T_c$ was observed in the c-axis polarized reflectance measurement. We elaborate that there exist nodes for the superconducting gap in regions of the 3D Fermi surface that contribute dominantly to the c-axis optical conductivity.

Single crystals of LaFeAsO, NdFeAsO, and SmFeAsO have been prepared by means of a NaAs flux growth technique and studied by optical spectroscopy measurements. We show that the spectral features corresponding to the partial energy gaps in the spin-den sity-wave (SDW) state are present below the structural phase transition. This indicates that the electronic state below the structural phase transition is already very close to that in the SDW state. We also show that in-plane infrared phonon modes display systematic shifts towards high frequency upon rare-earth element substitutions for La, suggesting a strong enhancement of the bonding strength. Furthermore, an asymmetric line-shape of the in-plane phonon mode is observed, implying the presence of an electron-phonon coupling effect in Fe-pnictides.

We present the c-axis optical reflectance measurement on single crystals of BaFe$_2$As$_2$ and SrFe$_2$As$_2$, the parent compounds of FeAs based superconductors. Different from the ab-plane optical response where two distinct energy gaps were observ ed in the SDW state, only the smaller energy gap could be seen clearly for textbf{E}$parallel$c-axis. The very pronounced energy gap structure seen at a higher energy scale for textbf{E}$parallel$ab-plane is almost invisible. We propose a novel picture for the band structure evolution across the SDW transition and suggest different driving mechanisms for the formation of the two energy gaps.

BaNi$_2$As$_2$ exhibits a first order structural transition at 130 K. Understanding this structural transition is a crucial step towards understanding the electronic properties of the material. We present a combined optical spectroscopy and band stru cture calculation study on the compound across the transition. The study reveals that BaNi$_2$As$_2$ is a good metal with a rather high plasma frequency. The phase transition leads to a small reduction of conducting carriers. We identify that this reduction is caused by the removal of several small Fermi surface sheets contributed dominantly from the As-As bonding and Ni-As antibonding states.
